Six differently distributed Poaceae species were compared in order to identify morphological and/or physiological properties that ensure calcicole species but not calcifuge species a sufficient Fe supply on CaCO3 rich soils. When grown at a range of FeEDTA supply from deficient to adequate, the calcicole species had higher Fe productivities and relative yields at low Fe supply than the calcifuges. Specific root surface and Fe uptake requirements were lower in calcicoles than in calcifuges. Root exudation of Fe-mobilizing compounds was monitored in plants grown either with or without added FeEDTA in hydroponic culture. Under Fe deficiency, typically more than 80% of soluble root exudates of Poaceae are phytosiderophores (Marschner et al., 1989; Römheld, 1987). Maximum exudation rates of Fe mobilizing compounds were 6.6 to 11.5 μmol g?1 root dry wt 2 hr?1 in calcicoles and 0.48 to 1.64 in calcifuges. If Fe requirement is defined as mean Fe uptake rate required for 90 % of the maximal relative growth rate, the exudation rates of Fe mobilizing compounds were at least 11.7 to 31.9 times higher than Fe requirements in calcicoles and 0.38 to 5.36 times higher in calcifuges. Growth response to a precipitated versus a chelated Fe source was determined. The relative ability to grow with Fe(OH)3 precipitate was correlated with the Fe mobilization rate of the species. The present results give evidence for the importance of Fe efficiency in wild plants. Calcicoles are able to live on calcareous soils partly because they produce larger amounts of Fe mobilizing compounds and have lower tissue Fe requirements than calcifuges.  相似文献

Formicine ants in distress spray alarm pheromone which typically recruits nestmates for help. Studying the western carpenter ant, Camponotus modoc Wheeler (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), our objectives were to (1) determine the exocrine glands that contain alarm recruitment pheromone, (2) identify the key alarm recruitment pheromone components, and (3) ascertain the pheromone components that are discharged by distressed ants. In Y-tube olfactometer experiments, extracts of poison glands, but not of Dufour’s glands, elicited anemotactic responses from worker ants. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analyses of poison gland extracts revealed the presence of (1) aliphatic alkanes (undecane, tridecane, pentadecane, heptadecane), (2) aliphatic alkenes [(Z)-7-pentadecene, (Z)-7- and (Z)-8-heptadecene], (3) two acids (formic, benzoic), and (4) other oxygenated compounds (hexadecan-1-ol, hexadecyl formate, hexadecyl acetate). Testing the responses of worker ants in Y-tube olfactometers to complete and partial synthetic blends of these compounds revealed that the acids and the alkanes are essential alarm pheromone components. In two-choice arena bioassays, micro-locations treated with synthetic alarm pheromone recruited worker ants. Acids and alkanes were abundant in the poison gland and the Dufour’s gland, respectively, suggesting that the alarm pheromone components originate from both glands. Moreover, alarm pheromone sprays of ants differed in that all sprays contained formic acid but only some also contained alkanes, implying that ants can independently discharge the content of either one or both glands in accordance with the type of distress incident they experience.  相似文献

At a natural drone congregation area freeflying drones were attracted by a fast-moving queen dummy and the pursuits of drones were stereoscopically recorded (Fig. 1). The reconstruction of 192 flight paths from successfully approaching drones in chronological three dimensional sequences (Fig. 4) lead to the following results: 1. The alignment of the drone's longitudinal body axis coincides fairly well with the line connecting drone and queen (drone-queen-axis), its mean angular deviation from this line being only 14°. Angles between -5° and 5° occur most frequently (Fig. 5B). Thus, drones head straight to the queen. 2. Lateral deviations from the drone-queen-axis most frequently lie between — 30° and 30° (Fig. 5A) which corresponds to the drone's binocular visual field. 3. The drone's heading was continuously adjusted to the actual target, mean turning speed being 1890°/s. 4. The results lead to the conclusion that honeybee drones choose the shortest way to a fast and not predictably moving mate. A comparison with earlier observations suggests that a drone's mating success depends not only on his skills to win a race but also on his persistence within a group.  相似文献

For a very long time, mosquitoes have been known or suspected to consume plant liquids. Recently eclosed mosquitoes cannot survive long without consuming sugary plant liquids that provide fuel for flight and enable blood-feeding and mating. Populations of even highly synanthropic mosquitoes may not be able to persist without phytophagy, even when vertebrate blood is readily available. Phytophagy is a key element of mosquito ecology, and understanding it is critical to combat mosquito-borne diseases. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about mosquito phytophagy and outline future research needs. Specifically, we review the many plant-derived food sources mosquitoes exploit, study the pollination function of mosquitoes, highlight the predation risks of plant-foraging mosquitoes, investigate the role of microbes in the sugar-foraging ecology of mosquitoes, and shed light on the evolution of haematophagy.  相似文献

Oral application of 50 mg Etomoxir caused a significant rise (33.1%) of insulin-mediated glucose uptake. This was shown in a placebo-controlled, double-blind randomized study in 8 type 2 diabetic patients by using the euglycemic clamp technique. The mean metabolic clearance rate of glucose (MCR) was raised from 4.1 +/- 0.9 mg/(kg.min) to 5.4 +/- 1.2 mg/(kg.min) (x +/- SEM, P = 0.039). Plasma levels of free fatty acids (FFA), glucose counterregulatory hormones, lipids and C-peptide values during the clamps were not different after verum and placebo. We conclude that Etomoxir improves insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetic patients.  相似文献

Enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition at high latitudes is a circumpolar phenomenon. Low soil phosphorus (P), however, may limit vegetation responses to increased N inputs. From 2000 to 2002, the effects of N at 0, 0.5 (a rate occurring in Greenland and Iceland) and 5 (equivalent to deposition in areas of Europe) g N m−2 a−1 and P (0.1 g m−2 a−1) treatments on plant species’ cover and diversity were determined at a polar semidesert site (ambient deposition c 0.1 g N m−2 a−1) in Svalbard (79°N). The largest response was to combined 5 g N plus 1 g P m−2 a−1, where cover of Saxifraga oppositifolia increased c fourfold, density of Salix polaris leaves c ninefold, seedlings of several ‘new’ species (Draba oxycarpa, Saxifraga caespitosa, Sagina nivalis) were established and ‘immigration’ of Bryum arcticum and ‘extinction’ of Schistidium apocarpum were observed. There were fewer, less pronounced, effects on the plant community at 0.5 g N m−2 a−1. Low P availability did indeed appear to restrict vegetation response to N. There was a trend for plant species’ richness and diversity to increase with 1 g P m−2 a−1 at 0 and 0.5 g N m−2 a−1, but not at 5 g N m−2. Plant species showed individualistic responses so that generalisation by functional type was not possible. Such increased colonisation by moss species of bare soil, and greater densities of previously unrecorded angiosperm seedlings, are not usually observed in more closed (subarctic) tundra as a response to N and P additions. These changes are likely to influence significantly nutrient cycles, whole system carbon budgets and surface energy and water balances.
