Computer simulations showed that reproductive synchrony in the greater investing sex can evolve as a strategy for increasing the investment of mates. The potential for synchrony to increase in frequency for this reason decreased with (a) increasing population size, (b) decreasing importance of synchrony-enforced investment, (c) increasing variance in quality among members of the lesser investing sex, and (d) decreasing male: female sex ratio. By reducing the payoffs to desertion, synchrony may result in the evolution of uniquely effective forms of parental care by the lesser investing sex, making desertion unprofitable regardless of the availability of potential mates. Thus relative levels of optimal parental investment are subject to change through the action of sexual selection itself.  相似文献

When the thymidine analog BrdU was incorporated into the DNA of a fibroblast cell line derived from the cactus mouse Peromyscus eremicus, a chromosome region with an increased frequency of gaps and breaks was observed. Nearly a third of the chromatid aberrations found at this site were associated with a sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) although this chromosome region showed no increase in sister-chromatid exchange in the absence of a gap or break. SCEs were significantly decreased in the remainder of the chromosome arm when it contained an aberration at the unstable site. This BrdU-sensitive region, unlike others reported, was found not to be late-replicating. — In this chromosome complement, the frequency of sisterchromatid exchange in C-band positive regions was significantly lower than that in C-band negative regions.  相似文献

Summary Sesquiterpene lactone glaucolide-A from Vernonia, incorporated in the rearing diets of five species of Lepidoptera, significantly reduced the rate of growth of larvae of the southern armyworm, Spodoptera eridania; fall armyworm, S. frugiperda; and yellowstriped armyworm, S. ornithogalli. Quantitative feeding tests demonstrated that decreased feeding levels and reduced growth resulted from ingestion of a sesquiterpene lactone. Ingestion of glaucolide-A increased the number of days to pupation in four of the species. In the southern armyworm, it significantly reduced pupal weight. Glaucolide-A decidedly reduced percentage of survival of southern and fall armyworms. Yellow woollybear, Diacrisia virginica, and cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, larvae were essentially uneffected by the ingestion of the sesquiterpene lactone. Sesquiterpene lactones adversely affect growth rate and survival of certain insects that feed upon plants containing them. The 8-hydroxy derivative of adenine (6-amino-1,7-dihydro-8H-purin-8-one) is produced from adenine by two Oerskovia xanthineolytica strains. This transformation by a microorganism has not been reported previously. No novel products of dissimilation of xanthine (3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione) or hypoxanthine (1,7-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one) were found. Xanthine was oxidized to uric acid, but intermediates in the breakdown of hypoxanthine could not be demonstrated.  相似文献

A protein which contains 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (AEP) has been isolated from the ciliate protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. The protein contains about 30% carbohydrate with both N- and O-glycosidic linkages to the polypeptide and 8% AEP which is attached only to the O-linked glycoside. The amino group of AEP is unreactive to dansyl chloride as is the amino terminus of the protein. The polypeptide portion of the molecule, Mr 22,500, contains 22% glycine, 5.5% hydroxyproline, and is quite acidic. The phosphoprotein is found in the cell membranes. Its synthesis is inhibited by tunicamycin to the same extent which the antibiotic inhibits cell division.  相似文献

Fatty-acid synthesis has been measured in vivo with3H2O in cafeteria-fed rats exhibiting diet-induced thermogenesis. Synthesis was decreased in brown adipose tissue, the liver, white adipose tissue, and the carcass of the cafeteria-fed animals compared to rats fed the normal stock diet. Whole-body synthesis was also decreased in the cafeteria-fed group. Diet-induced thermogenesis, in contrast to cold-induced non-shivering thermogenesis does not lead to increased fatty-acid synthesis and this is presumably due to the inhibitory effects on lipogenesis of the high dietary fat intake characteristic of cafeteria diets. The results also indicate that the energy cost of body fat deposition in cafeteria-fed rats is lower than in animals fed a low-fat/high-carbohydrate stock diet.  相似文献

Hybridomas which secrete monoclonal antibodies against human type III procollagen have been developed. By an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, three of the monoclonal antibodies have been determined to be against non-helical extensions of the molecules while two of the antibodies are against helical portion of the molecules which is sensitive to bacterial collagenase action. These findings have been further confirmed by carrying out immuno-reaction of the pro α-chains transferred on nitrocellulose paper from sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gels. These monoclonal antibodies have been found to be suitable reagents for immunohistochemical studies as well as for immunoassays of type III procollagen and collagen.  相似文献

A large non-collagenous protein was extracted from degenerated cartilage of osteoarthritic canine joints. Evidence was presented that this protein is fibronectin. It had a molecular weight identical to that of fibronectin isolated from canine serum, required the presence of heparin and urea in the extraction buffer for solubilization, reacted with both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to fibronectin in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and exhibited gelatin binding properties. Fibronectin was detected in normal cartilage as well, although in lesser amounts than observed in osteoarthritic cartilage.  相似文献

Fatty Acid Oxidation and Ketogenesis by Astrocytes in Primary Culture   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
The oxidation of the fatty acids octanoate and palmitate to CO2 and the ketone bodies acetoacetate and D-(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate was examined in astrocytes that were prepared from cortex of 2-day-old rat brain and grown in primary culture to confluence. Accumulation of acetoacetate (by mass) in the culture medium of astrocytes incubated with octanoate (0.3-0.5 mM) was 50-90 nmol C2 units h-1 mg of protein-1. A similar rate was obtained using radiolabeled tracer methodology with [1-14C]octanoate as labeled substrate. The results from the radiolabeled tracer studies using [1-14C]- and [7-14C]octanoate and [1-14C]-, [13-14C]-, and [15-14C]palmitate indicated that a substantial proportion of the omega-terminal four-carbon unit of these fatty acids bypassed the beta-ketothiolase step of the beta-oxidation pathway and the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA cycle of the classic ketogenic pathway. The [14C]acetoacetate formed from the 1-14C-labeled fatty acids, obligated to pass through the acetyl-CoA pool, contained 50% of the label at carbon 3 and 50% at carbon 1. By contrast, the [14C]acetoacetate formed from (omega-1)-labeled fatty acids contained 90% of the label at carbon 3 and 10% at carbon 1, whereas that formed from the (omega-3)-labeled fatty acid contained 20% of the label at carbon 3 and 80% at carbon 1. These results indicate that acetoacetate is primarily formed either by the action of 3-oxo-acid-CoA transferase (EC 2.8.3.5) or acetoacetyl-CoA deacylase (EC 3.1.2.11) or both on acetoacetyl-CoA and not by the action of the mitochondrial HMG-CoA cycle involving HMG-CoA lyase (EC 4.1.3.4), which was readily detected, and HMG-CoA synthase (EC 4.1.3.5), which was barely measurable.  相似文献
