In Sri Lanka, as in India, two formally structured systems of medical service exist side-by-side. While Western-style biomedicine is believed to be useful, Ayurvedic medicine is also well established and commonly used. Underlying one explanation for the existence of plural medical systems is the idea that traditional and Western systems of medicine provide unique treatments for distinct problems, and patients having certain characteristics select them accordingly. A brief review of several studies in Sri Lanka suggests, however, that Western and Ayurvedic physicians practice medicine in similar ways, are selected for treatment of very similar symptoms, and from the patient's point of view are aften indistinguishable from each other. A second structural explanation rests on the fact that, as institutions, Western and Ayurvedic medicine have effectively divided up territory and jobs to the satisfaction of each; this division allows for upward mobility, through medicine, for young people from different segments of society. Thus these medical systems persist, not because each provides something unique for patients, but because they provide access to status and power for the physicians themselves.  相似文献

In six normal supine subjects epinephrine infusion produced a greater leukocytosis with smaller changes in heart rate and blood pressure than did norepinephrine or isoproterenol. Upright exercise in those subjects produced a greater leukocytosis than supine exercise at the same work load. To determine the lung's participation in these events, indium-labeled neutrophils (PMN) were given to four of the subjects. We found that 20-25% were retained in the first pass through the lung when compared with technetium-labeled erythrocytes. The number of labeled PMN in the lung gradually decreased and the number in the spleen and the liver increased. Exercise and catecholamine infusion caused an acceleration in the release of labeled cells from the lung, an increase in both labeled and unlabeled cells in the peripheral blood, and an increase in the number of labeled cells in the liver and spleen. This suggests that increased perfusion of low-flow areas in the lung may contribute to the increased leukocytosis seen in association with both exercise and catecholamine infusion.  相似文献

Tuftsin, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg, that activates macrophage functions, binds to specific receptors on these cells. The receptor capacity to bind tuftsin is diminished by prior treatment of the cells with dithiothreitol. Adherent mouse peritoneal macrophages bind tuftsin to a far less extent than non-adherent macrophages. Michaelis constant (Km) of tuftsin for phagocytic stimulation of macrophages is 111 eta M. The half maximal binding concentration of tuftsin by these cells is 117 eta M. These are similar values and indicate that full occupancy of the receptors by tuftsin is a necessary prerequisite for maximal phagocytosis.  相似文献

The amino acid sequence of the L-arabinose-binding protein of Escherichia coli B/r was determined by sequenator analyses of reduced and S-pyridylethylated L-arabinose-binding protein and fragments derived by chemical and enzymatic cleavage of the native protein. The fragments were the products of cleavage by cyanogen bromide. BNPS-skatole, hydroxylamine, mild acid hydrolysis, limited trypsin digestion, chymotrypsin subdigestion, and subdigestion with Staphylococcus aureus protease V8. The COOH-terminal sequence was determined using bovine carboxypeptidases A and B and amino acid analyses. The L-arabinose-binding protein was determined to contain 306 amino acid residues, the sequence of which is presented below.  相似文献

When DNA from bacteriophage T7 is irradiated with UV light, the efficiency with which this DNA can be packaged in vitro to form viable phage particles is reduced. A comparison between irradiated DNA packaged in vitro and irradiated intact phage particles shows almost identical survival as a function of UV dose when Escherichia coli wild type or polA or uvrA mutants are used as the host. Although uvrA mutants perform less host cell reactivation, the polA strains are identical with wild type in their ability to support the growth of irradiated T7 phage or irradiated T7 DNA packaged in vitro into complete phage. An examination of in vitro repair performed by extracts of T7-infected E.coli suggests that T7 DNA polymerase may substitute for E. coli DNA polymerase I in the resynthesis step of excision repair. Also tested was the ability of a similar in vitro repair system that used extracts from uninfected cells to restore biological activity of irradiated DNA. When T7 DNA damaged by UV irradiation was treated with an endonuclease from Micrococcus luteus that is specific for pyrimidine dimers and then was incubated with an extract of uninfected E. coli capable of removing pyrimidine dimers and restoring the DNA of its original (whole genome size) molecular weight, this DNA showed a higher packaging efficiency than untreated DNA, thus demonstrating that the in vitro repair system partially restored the biological activity of UV-damaged DNA.  相似文献

Computer simulations showed that reproductive synchrony in the greater investing sex can evolve as a strategy for increasing the investment of mates. The potential for synchrony to increase in frequency for this reason decreased with (a) increasing population size, (b) decreasing importance of synchrony-enforced investment, (c) increasing variance in quality among members of the lesser investing sex, and (d) decreasing male: female sex ratio. By reducing the payoffs to desertion, synchrony may result in the evolution of uniquely effective forms of parental care by the lesser investing sex, making desertion unprofitable regardless of the availability of potential mates. Thus relative levels of optimal parental investment are subject to change through the action of sexual selection itself.  相似文献

The mercurial mersalyl has little effect either on rapid Mg++ binding by isolated rat liver mitochondria or on the total Mg++ content of these organelles measured after 0.75 min of incubation at 20°C. The data do not support the previous suggestion that the increased permeability to K+ of mitochondria treated with mersalyl results from release of endogenous Mg++. An increased pH-dependence of unidirectional Mg++ flux into respiring rat liver mitochondria is suggested to arise indirectly from inhibition by mersalyl of pH shifts associated with exchanges of endogenous phosphate. In addition, mersalyl appears to have a stimulatory effect on Mg++ influx. Mersalyl also increases the average rate of unidirectional efflux of endogenous Mg++. The stimulatory effects of mersalyl on Mg++ flux are similar to, although quantitatively less than, the previously reported effects of mersalyl on mitochondrial K+ flux.  相似文献

Embryonic-chick tendon cells were incubated in suspension for 4h with (14)C-labelled amino acids, cell extracts were subjected to gel filtration, and the effluent was examined by rocket immunoelectrophoresis by using antibodies specific for the beta-subunit of chick prolyl hydroxylase. Two peaks of immunoreactive protein were found. The first peak contained 40% of the immunoreactive protein eluted from the column and 100% of the enzyme activity. Polyacrylamide-slab-gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulphate of an immunoprecipitate of this peak demonstrated that it consisted of the tetrameric form of prolyl hydroxylase, subunit composition alpha(2)beta(2) where alpha and beta are non-identical subunits. Only the alpha-subunits were labelled, indicating that they were synthesized during the 4h labelling period. The beta-subunits were unlabelled, indicating that they had been synthesized before the labelling period. The second peak eluted from the gel-filtration column contained 60% of the immunoreactive protein eluted from the column and was enzymically inactive. Polyacrylamide-slab-gel electrophoresis of an immunoprecipitate of this peak indicated that it consisted of a single labelled polypeptide chain, identified as cross-reacting protein, which was related to, but not identical with, the beta-subunit of prolyl hydroxylase. Pulse-chase experiments were performed on cultured chick tendon cells to demonstrate that alpha-subunits and cross-reacting protein had half-lives of about 60h. The half-life of beta-subunits was considerably longer, and the kinetic pattern was consistent with their being derived from a labelled precursor such as cross-reacting protein. The data presented here indicate that the active tetrameric form of prolyl hydroxylase in cells is assembled from alpha-subunits which are newly synthesized, and from beta-subunits which are derived from cross-reacting protein.  相似文献
