A class of organic polymers, known as conducting polymers (CPs), has become increasingly popular due to its unique electrical and optical properties. Material characteristics of CPs are similar to those of some metals and inorganic semiconductors, while retaining polymer properties such as flexibility, and ease of processing and synthesis, generally associated with conventional polymers. Owing to these characteristics, research efforts in CPs have gained significant traction to produce several types of CPs since its discovery four decades ago. CPs are often categorised into different types based on the type of electric charges (e.g., delocalized pi electrons, ions, or conductive nanomaterials) responsible for conduction. Several CPs are known to interact with biological samples while maintaining good biocompatibility and hence, they qualify as interesting candidates for use in a numerous biological and medical applications. In this paper, we focus on CP-based sensor elements and the state-of-art of CP-based sensing devices that have potential applications as tools in clinical diagnosis and surgical interventions. Representative applications of CP-based sensors (electrochemical biosensor, tactile sensing 'skins', and thermal sensors) are briefly discussed. Finally, some of the key issues related to CP-based sensors are highlighted.  相似文献

The development of devices for the precise and controlled delivery of therapeutics has grown rapidly over the last few decades. Drug delivery materials must provide a depot with delivery profiles that satisfy pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic requirements resulting in clinical benefit. Therapeutic efficacy can be limited due to short half-life and poor stability. Thus, to compensate for this, frequent administration and high doses are often required to achieve therapeutic effect, which in turn increases potential side effects and systemic toxicity. This can potentially be mitigated by using materials that can deliver drugs at controlled rates, and material design principles that allow this are continuously evolving. Affinity-based release strategies incorporate a myriad of reversible interactions into a gel network, which have affinities for the therapeutic of interest. Reversible binding to the gel network impacts the release profile of the drug. Such affinity-based interactions can be modulated to control the release profile to meet pharmacokinetic benchmarks. Much work has been done developing affinity-based control in the context of polymer-based materials. However, this strategy has not been widely implemented in peptide-based hydrogels. Herein, we present recent advances in the use of affinity-controlled peptide gel release systems and their associated mechanisms for applications in drug delivery.  相似文献

As the battle against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic is still continuing worldwide, several complications are being reported in patients who have recovered post-covid. One such lethal complication being reported in patients in India in recent times, who have tested positive for Covid-19 and are gradually recovering, is a fungal disease called Mucormycosis or the black fungus. With several hundreds of cases being reported all over the country, it has triggered an additional wave of panic among the general public. Post-Covid-19 patients who are more vulnerable to Mucormycosis are those with a history of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and also those who are immuno-compromised and have been treated with steroids and other drugs for Covid-19. The aim of this short review is to briefly cover the epidemiology of mucormycosis, its possible pathophysiology in Post Covid scenario, the clinical presentation and its diagnosis and management.  相似文献

The backwater system of Kerala is well known. In the present investigation, we have tried to explore the marine fungal diversity of selected backwater and brackish water habitats of the North Malabar region of Kerala, India. A total of 30 marine fungi were isolated, which include 19 Ascomycetes, 1 Basidiomycete, and 10 Mitosporic fungi. Periconia prolifica emerged as the most dominant one in terms of percent frequency of occurrence and percent relative abundance.  相似文献

Aims: Salmonella spp. has the capability to form biofilm on various surfaces. Biofilm‐associated protein (bapA), a large surface protein has been shown to play a leading role in the development of biofilm in Salmonella. Objective of this study was to investigate the presence of bapA gene in different serotypes of Salmonella spp. and to characterize DNA fragment encoding bapA protein of Salmonella Enteritidis. Methods and Results: Sixty‐seven Salmonella strains belonging to 34 serovars isolated from diverse sources in India were screened for the presence of bapA gene employing a primer designed for the purpose. All the strains yielded a positive amplification indicating that the bapA gene is well conserved in Salmonella spp. The amplified gene fragment of bapA was cloned in Escherichia coli (DH5 α) cells by using pGEM‐T easy cloning vector. On partial sequence analysis, the product exhibited 667 base pairs, corresponding to 218 amino acids. Conclusions BapA gene was found to be highly conserved in Salmonella. Partial sequence analysis of this gene from a strain of Salm. Enteritidis revealed close association with serotypes of poultry origin and also with some other animal/zoonotic serotypes. Significance and Impact of the Study: BapA gene can be targeted for the genus‐specific detection of this organism from different sources. Antigenic index of bapA protein indicates its protective and diagnostic potentials.  相似文献

Background  

A polarized light scattering technique was used to monitor the performance of a continuously operated foam fractionation process. The S 11 and S 12 parameters, elements of the light scattering matrix, combined together (S 11 +S 12) have been correlated with the bubble size and liquid content for the case of a freely draining foam. The performance of a foam fractionation column is known to have a strong dependence on the bubble size distribution and liquid hold up in foam. In this study the enrichment is used as a metric, representative of foam properties and column performance, and correlated to the S 11 +S 12 parameter.  相似文献

We describe for the first time the sexual behavior and the courtship song of males of the African fly Zaprionus indianus (Gupta), a recent invader of South America. The male courtship song is formed by monocyclic pulses and the courtship behavior is simple when compared to that of species of Drosophila. Two interpulse interval (IPI) distributions were observed: pre-mounting and mounting. No significant difference was observed between the pre-mounting IPIs of males that descended from three geographical populations from South America. We also observed the songs produced by females and the homosexual behavior exhibited by males. A sequence of bursts is produced by females as a refusal signal against males, while males emit a characteristic song that identifies sex genus, which differs from the courtship song. The short courtship and mating latencies recorded reveal vigorous males and receptive females, respectively.  相似文献

DNA sequence and structure play a key role in imparting fragility to different regions of the genome. Recent studies have shown that non-B DNA structures play a key role in causing genomic instability, apart from their physiological roles at telomeres and promoters. Structures such as G-quadruplexes, cruciforms, and triplexes have been implicated in making DNA susceptible to breakage, resulting in genomic rearrangements. Hence, techniques that aid in the easy identification of such non-B DNA motifs will prove to be very useful in determining factors responsible for genomic instability. In this study, we provide evidence for the use of primer extension as a sensitive and specific tool to detect such altered DNA structures. We have used the G-quadruplex motif, recently characterized at the BCL2 major breakpoint region as a proof of principle to demonstrate the advantages of the technique. Our results show that pause sites corresponding to the non-B DNA are specific, since they are absent when the G-quadruplex motif is mutated and their positions change in tandem with that of the primers. The efficiency of primer extension pause sites varied according to the concentration of monovalant cations tested, which support G-quadruplex formation. Overall, our results demonstrate that primer extension is a strong in vitro tool to detect non-B DNA structures such as G-quadruplex on a plasmid DNA, which can be further adapted to identify non-B DNA structures, even at the genomic level.  相似文献
