- Land-use change is a leading driver of biodiversity loss, especially in tropical fresh waters where the conversion of natural forest to monoculture plantations impacts freshwater fish assemblages. The environmental pathways underpinning shifts in fish assemblages, however, are poorly understood, but could potentially be inferred from trait–environment relationships.
- We addressed this knowledge gap using eco-morphological traits to explain fish occurrences in oil palm-impacted streams of the Endau drainage in Peninsular Malaysia. We also investigated how traits relate to differences in environmental conditions associated with land-use change. We then integrate findings from the above to test how potential pathways of land-use driven environmental changes can impact species occurrences through effects on life history, feeding habits, and mobility.
- Mixed-effects models show that fishes with superior (upward-facing) mouths and low body mass were more likely to occur in oil palm streams than forest streams, and these traits were associated with grass-dominated riparian zones and reduced woody debris in oil palm streams, respectively. Structural equation models show that mouth positions statistically mediated the effect of riparian vegetation on fish species occurrences in oil palm streams. Specifically, fishes with superior mouths were more likely to feed on terrestrial invertebrates.
- Our analysis of easily measurable traits revealed pathways of land-use impact that are potentially more widely applicable than conventional taxa-based approaches. Fishes with superior mouths tended to occur in oil palm streams as they were able to more effectively exploit inputs of terrestrial invertebrates that are potentially associated with grass-dominated riparian vegetation.
- Moreover, shifts in traits may suggest land-use driven changes in stream ecosystem functioning (e.g. in terms of the role of terrestrial subsidies), thereby informing targeted management actions in land-use impacted habitats (e.g. retention/restoration of riparian trees).

In an attempt to design delivery vehicles to enable epitope-based vaccine uptake, we investigated the properties of a variety
of synthetic, branched cationic structures. We found that branched compounds based on arginine or lysine were able to facilitate
internalization of peptide cargo into cells to different degrees. Branched constructs containing only two arginine residues
(R2) were not only able to bind to cells more efficiently than constructs with two lysine residues (K2) but were also internalized within vesicle like compartments in the cell. The extent of binding and uptake was enhanced when
additional arginine residues were incorporated to form a tetra arginine construct (R4). An investigation into the kinetics and dose dependence of cellular uptake of these arginine-based constructs demonstrated
that binding and internalization is a rapid and efficient event. We also found uptake of the peptide epitope TYQRTRALV was
enhanced when it was coupled to R4. This approach may prove useful for introducing peptide epitopes into antigen presenting cells as self-adjuvanting structures

Previous analysis of a transgenic tobacco line (BN1) that over-expressedrice phytochrome A (PhyA) indicated that the introduced PhyAwas spectrally and biologically active [Kay et al. (1989) PlantCell 1: 775, Nagatani et al. (1991) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA88: 5207]. In the present study, we have further investigatedresponses of the BN1 plants to light. Fluence rate dependenceanalysis of the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation indicatedthat the response is biphasic. The amplitude of the low fluencerate component increased by 2 to 3 fold in the BN1 plants comparedto the wild type. In contrast, the presence of rice PhyA didnot alter the level of chlorophyll in the BN1 seedlings grownunder the same light conditions. Ultrastructure studies showedthat chloroplasts in the BN1 plants were not significantly differentfrom those in the wild type plants, except that chloroplastsin the guard cells of the BN1 plants appeared to be more developedthan those of the wild type plants. The fluence response analysisof the potentiation of chlorophyll accumulation indicated nosignificant difference between the BN1 and the wild type plants.Thus, the introduced rice PhyA greatly influenced hypocotylelongation but did not significantly affect the greening process.

Studies on populations of Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), its parasites and hyperparasites were carried out by actual counting in the sprouts field and by sticky and water traps. B. brassicae was found to be attacked by one primary parasite, Diaretiella rapae (McIntosh ), which in turn is parasitized by Alloxysta brassicae (Ashm. ),Asaphes vulgarisWalker ,A. suspensus (Nees ),Pachyneuron minutissimum (Förster ) and Dendrocerus carpenterii (Curtis ). The aphid population in the field was started by immigrant alates which were found flying too early to be synchronized with the sprouts plants. Similarly D. rapae was not synchronized with the aphids although many individuals could have been carried into a plot through parasitized immigrant alates, of which less than 30% were found parasitized. Because of high hyperparasitism (especially by A. brassicae)D. rapae was not able to maintain a high rate of parasitism to curb the aphid population growth. The maximum percentage mummies being 27.8%, while the maximum, percentage parasitism being 56.6% recorded only during the early 1974 season (mean=12.9%). The decline of aphid population from September onwards was largely due to the cold weather, Syrphid predation and occasionally fungal attack. The high rate of hyperparasitism by A. brassicae is attributed to its better synchronization with D. rapae. The mean percentage of parasite that emerged from mummies collected during 1973–74 were D. rapae 31.3%,A. brassicae 64.3%,A. vulgaris and A. suspensus 4.3%,D. carpenterii 0.2% and P. minutissimum 0.1%. 相似文献
