Ovarian activity in the female giraffe was evaluated during the nonfertile ovarian cycle and during the terminal stages of gestation. Progesterone metabolites, in the form of pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG), were measured in daily random urine samples collected from four adult parous giraffes. The follicular phase averaged 4.0 ± 0.1 days in length (N = 12; range 3–5 days) and peak PdG levels in the postovulatory period averaged 30.9 ± 1.7 ng/mg Cr (N = 12). PdG levels during the latter half of gestation greatly exceeded average luteal phase levels, which is in contrast to domestic ruminants. Prior to parturition, a marked decline in PdG excretion was evident, which may be useful for anticipating this event. These data serve to elucidate ovarian function in the mature female giraffe and to provide information concerning the physiologic role of certain anomalous ovarian structures. In addition, observed similarities in the pattern of PdG excretion during the nonfertile cycles of the giraffe and the okapi indicate similar underlying physiologic processes.  相似文献

Courting male fiddler crabs of the species Uca musica terpsichores congregate in the upper central portion of the colony, while receptive females leave their burrows located at the colony's periphery and wander among the communally displaying males prior to choosing a mate. I observed that courting males in a newly-established population were significantly smaller than courting males in large high-density colonies. This observation led to a series of translocation experiments designed to ascertain whether high population density influences the size (=age) at which males begin to court. Smaller courting males from a low-density population failed to court after being placed among larger courting males in a high-density population. The reciprocal translocation revealed that smaller noncourting males from the high-density population would start courting shortly after being placed in a low-density population. Smaller males placed in the high-density population were subsequently observed significantly further away from where they were initially placed than were larger males similarly translocated. The results suggest that smaller males delay courtship activities once they are forced, via encounters with larger males, to the periphery of the colony. I believe that both intrasexual selection (competition from larger males) and intersexual selection (female choice of large males) are responsible for the delay in male courtship activities.  相似文献

The clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana has a rare mating system known as androdioecy, in which males and hermaphrodites cooccur butthere are no pure females. In this species, reproduction takesplace by outcrossing between males and hermaphrodites, or byselfing within a hermaphrodite; this system provides a uniqueopportunity to examine the adaptive significance of out-crossingand selfing in animals. Our study examined mating behavior in hermaphrodites and males from two populations to understandthe propensity of these shrimp to mate and to estimate a parameterof a model developed by Otto et al. (American Naturalist 141:329-337),which predicts the conditions for stability of the mixed matingsystem in E. texana. Here we present evidence that mating frequencyis environmentally sensitive, with greater numbers of encountersand matings per male when males are rare and in younger males.However, the effects of shrimp density, relative male frequency,and shrimp age interact in a complex way to determine malemating success. Overall, mating frequency was determined bya combination of encounter rates between the sexes and theproportion of encounters resulting in mating. The mating rateswere then used to estimate one of four parameters of the Ottoet al. model, and these estimates were combined with previousestimates of the other three parameters to examine the fitof the predicted to the observed sex ratios in the two populations.  相似文献

The design and implementation of assisted reproductive technology to improve genetic diversity and augment captive populations is an important but rarely applied research field in reptiles. Using the corn snake (Elaphe gutatta) as a model, the Henry Doorly Zoo recently produced offspring born as a result of artificial insemination using both fresh, diluted semen, and diluted semen stored at refrigeration for 3 days. Semen was collected noninvasively from sexually mature male corn snakes using a gentle massaging technique, extended in medium then inseminated into the oviducts of adult females. Using molecular genetic techniques to confirm or refute the success of the insemination using primers developed for the black rat snake, Elaphe obsolete, all possible parents and offspring genotypes were evaluated. In this investigation, an attempt was made to identify the major urinary estrogen metabolites in the okapi by radioisotope infusion and by chromatographic separation procedures. The results suggest that the urinary estrogens are excreted in concentrations below the limit of sensitivity of conventional assay systems. In addition, a variety of contaminants with estrogenic immunoreactivity are present in okapi urine that are not necessarily correlated with follicular activity. A great proportion of circulating estrogen is eliminated in fecal material. However, the rate of elimination is slow, and the extraction procedures necessary to detect the metabolites are tedious, which would prevent the practical application of this procedure for monitoring follicular activity.  相似文献

Reliable quantitative data are lacking that document the prevalence of ingestion of soil and other “non-food” substances among U.S. children and adults. This article explores the proportion of the U.S. population that ingests substances such as soil, clay, starch, paint, or plaster. We compiled data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected from years 1971–1975 (NHANES I) and 1976–1980 (NHANES II) because these particular surveys asked participants specific questions about non-food ingestion practices. We examined the prevalence of the behavior across multiple demographic variables, such as age, gender, education, and income level. Approximately 1% (NHANES II) to 2.5% (NHANES I) of the U.S. population ingests some type of non-food substance. The most notable variation across the demographic subgroups studied was the difference in estimated prevalence among young children (1 to <3 years) compared to older children and adults. Estimated prevalence was also higher among blacks compared to whites and within lower compared to higher socioeconomic groups. This analysis helps fill data gaps on the relative pattern of non-food ingestion practices on a national scale. This information provides perspective for risk assessors when evaluating exposure variables and for risk managers when weighing risk management alternatives.  相似文献

Androdioecy (populations comprised of mixtures of males and hermaphrodites) is a rare mating system, found only in a few plants and animals. The rarity of this system stems from the limited benefits to males in an otherwise all-hermaphroditic population. One of the potential benefits to males is typified by the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, in which hermaphrodites do not produce sufficient sperm to fertilize all of their eggs. Here we explore the possibility that males are needed for complete fertilization of hermaphrodites' eggs in a second androdioecious animal, the clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana. We compare the fertilization rate of outcrossed to selfed eggs to test whether the latter exhibit lower fertilization due to sperm limitation (as in C. elegans). Because this comparison confounds differences in egg fertilization due to sperm limitation with the potential for early inbreeding depression, we also used a third mating treatment, a brother/sister cross, to allow separation of sperm limitation from inbreeding depression. In both populations examined, the proportion of eggs that were fertilized decreased linearly with increasing relatedness: comparing eggs produced by outcrossing, brother/sister, and selfed matings, respectively. This pattern suggests that differences in fertilization among these three treatments were caused solely by inbreeding depression, and therefore that hermaphrodites are not sperm limited. These results are combined with previous data on this species to test whether the maintenance of males can be explained using a population genetics model specifically designed for this species.  相似文献

About two-thirds of the more than 100 genera in the Araceae lack tepals and their absence is considered derived. Unlike most of these atepalate genera, Calla palustris has about twice as many stamens per flower. Using epi-illumination microscopy, we studied floral development in Calla to see if the supernumerary stamens form in positions corresponding to tepal positions in perigonate Araceae. If so, this would be an example of homeosis—in this case, the replacement of tepals with stamens—in the evolution of this genus. We found the positions of stamen primordia in many floral buds too irregular to conclude that they replace tepals positionally. However, in more regular floral buds the first formed stamens do form in what correspond to tepal sites in related genera. If the immediate ancestor to Calla had tepals, as is generally assumed, stamen positions in the more regular flowers, at least, support a homeotic interpretation. There is no evidence that the supernumerary stamens arise by dédoublement, but since morphogenesis in Calla is only partly comparable to other aroids, and the phylogeny in the family is not well understood, further studies are needed to resolve the interpretation of the flower in Calla. With regard to systematics and evolution, the absence of tepals in Calla may not be homologous with atepaly in other members of the family, as has been assumed for the past century.  相似文献

Recently it was found that dipotassium-trioxohydroxytetrafluorotriborate, K2(B3O3F4OH), is a potent and highly specific inhibitor of precancerous cell processes. We conducted gene expression profiling of human melanoma cells before and after treatment with two concentrations (0.1 and 1?mM) of this boron inorganic derivative in order to assess its effects on deregulation of genes associated with tumor pathways. Parallel trypan blue exclusion assay was performed to assess the cytotoxicity effects of this chemical. Treatment with K2(B3O3F4OH) induced a significant decrease of cell viability in melanoma cellline at both tested concentrations. Furthermore, these treatments caused deregulation of more than 30 genes known as common anti-tumor drug targets. IGF-1 and hTERT were found to be significantly downregulated and this result may imply potential use of K2(B3O3F4OH) as an inhibitor or human telomerase and insulin-like growth factor 1, both of which are associated with various tumor pathways.  相似文献
