There is little evidence from nature that divergent natural selection is crucial to speciation. However, divergent selection is implicated if traits conferring adaptation to alternative environments also form the basis of reproductive isolation. We tested the importance of body size differences to premating isolation between two sympatric sticklebacks. The species differ greatly in size, and several lines of evidence indicate that this difference is an adaptation to alternative foraging habitats. Strong assortative mating was evident in laboratory trials, but a few hybridization events occurred. Probability of interspecific mating was strongly correlated with body size: interspecific spawning occurred only between the largest individuals of the smaller species and the smallest individuals of the larger species. Probability of spawning between similar-sized individuals from different species was comparable to spawning rates within species. Disruption of mating between individuals from different species can be traced to increased levels of male aggression and decreased levels of male courtship as size differences increased between paired individuals. Interspecific mate preferences in sympatric sticklebacks appears to be dominated by body size, implicating natural selection in the origin of species.  相似文献

The marine lithistid sponge Discodermia spp. (Family Theonellidae) contains many types of associated bacteria visible in the mesohyl while biofilms cover the pinacoderm. This study determined the identity of bacteria associated with members of the genus Discodermia using microbial culture, 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Four samples of Discodermia spp. were collected at depths between 24–161?m near Grand Bahama Island and Cay Sal Bank, Bahamas. A total of 80 unique isolates and 94 different clone sequences from at least eight bacterial classes were obtained. It appeared that Discodermia spp. may have a core community of bacteria that is common to all sponges of this genus. Species of at least six different classes of bacteria were regularly found in most of the sponge specimens collected, irrespective of collection depth or location. This indicates that a diverse spectrum of bacteria is associated with lithistid sponges irrespective of the transient seawater community that enters the sponge.  相似文献

Array-CGH     
We report on our experience with array CGH analysis on 1310 samples over the last 5?years. The number of copy number variants (CNV) rises as the resolution of the arrays increases; however, the relevance of some of these findings is difficult to evaluate. Deletion or duplication in 16p11.2 was the most frequently diagnosed pathogenic CNV. Clinically relevant findings which were not directly connected to the query were observed in about 0.2% of patients.  相似文献

En el curso de las investigaciones sobre la fauna de las aguas subterráneas límnicas de la Argentina, se encontraron en pocas muestras una sorprendente cantidad de especies de crustáceos.

Una de las especies (Leptobathynella richerti) fué descubierta poco antes en Paraguay y 3 especies (Parastygocaris goerssi, P. andina e Ingolfiella uspallatae) ya han sido publicadas por el autor. Aqui se describen, se ilustran y se discuten 2 especies del género Parabathynella, 1 Nitocrella y 12 Parastenocaris como nuevas para la ciencia. Se completa la descripción de Leptobathynella richerti. Por falta de material, otras 5 especies aún no se han podido determinar.

Por consiguiente, la fauna de las aguas subterráneas neotropicales prueba ser abun‐dante y representada por mudias especies también en la Argentina. Un análisis biogeo‐gráfico del material aparecerá en otra oportunidad con relaciones más ámplias.

The four-year oscillations of the number of spawning sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that return to their native stream within the Fraser River basin in Canada are a striking example of population oscillations. The period of the oscillation corresponds to the dominant generation time of these fish. Various—not fully convincing—explanations for these oscillations have been proposed, including stochastic influences, depensatory fishing, or genetic effects. Here, we show that the oscillations can be explained as an attractor of the population dynamics, resulting from a strong resonance near a Neimark Sacker bifurcation. This explains not only the long-term persistence of these oscillations, but also reproduces correctly the empirical sequence of salmon abundance within one period of the oscillations. Furthermore, it explains the observation that these oscillations occur only in sockeye stocks originating from large oligotrophic lakes, and that they are usually not observed in salmon species that have a longer generation time.  相似文献

As the Lyme disease spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi shuttles back and forth between arthropod vector and vertebrate host, it encounters vastly different and hostile environments. Major mechanisms contributing to the success of this pathogen throughout this complex transmission cycle are phase and antigenic variation of abundant and serotype‐defining surface lipoproteins. These peripherally membrane‐anchored virulence factors mediate niche‐specific interactions with vector/host factors and protect the spirochaete from the perils of the mammalian immune response. In this issue of Molecular Microbiology, Tilly, Bestor and Rosa redefine the roles of two lipoproteins, OspC and VlsE, during mammalian infection. Using a variety of promoter fusions in combination with a sensitive in vivo ‘use it or lose it’ gene complementation assay, the authors demonstrate that proper sequential expression of OspC followed by VlsE indeed matters. A previously suggested general functional redundancy between these and other lipoproteins is shown to be limited and dependent on an immunodeficient experimental setting that is arguably of diminished ecological relevance. These data reinforce the notion that OspC plays a unique role during initial infection while the antigenically variant VlsE proteins allow for persistence in the mammalian host.  相似文献

Transepithelial Cl(-) conductance (G(Cl)) in amphibian skin can be activated in several species by serosa positive potentials. Mitochondria-rich cells (MRC) or tight junctions (TJ) between the epithelial cells are possible sites for this pathway. The properties and the techniques used to investigate this pathway are reviewed in the present paper. In situ techniques are preferable, since specific properties of the MRC are apparently not maintained in isolated cells. Volume measurements and electronprobe microanalysis of intracellular ions suggest the localization of voltage-activated G(Cl) to MRC. G(Cl) correlates poorly with the density of MRC. The vibrating voltage probe allows quantitative correlation of the local Cl(-) current through morphologically identified structures and the transepithelial Cl(-) current. Our analysis shows that 80% of the voltage-activated Cl(-) current is accounted for by current through MRC or their immediate vicinity. The activation patterns of this current and the inhibition by the alpha(1)-adrenergic agonist, epinephrine, conform to those of the transepithelial current. However, less than 20% of the MRC are active at a certain moment and the activity is spontaneously variable with time. The molecular nature of this pathway, physiological control mechanisms and their relation to the temporal activity of MRC remain to be studied.  相似文献

Abscisic acid is a hormonal stress signal that moves in the xylem from the root to the different parts of the shoot where it regulates transpirational water loss and leaf growth. The factors that modify the intensity of the ABA signal in the xylem are of particular interest because target cells recognize concentrations. ABA(xyl), will be decreased as radial water flow through the roots is increased, assuming that radial ABA transport occurs in the symplast only. Such dilutions of the plant hormone concentration can be compensated in different ways, which help to keep the ABA-concentrations in the xylem constant: (i) apoplastic bypass flows of ABA, (ii) ABA flows between the stem parenchyma and the xylem during transport and (iii) the action of beta-D-glucosidases that release free ABA from its conjugates to the root cortex and the leaf apoplast. The significance of reflection coefficients (sigma(ABA)), permeability coefficients of membranes (P(S)(ABA)) and apoplastic barriers for ABA is discussed.  相似文献

The amount of sample available for clinical and biological proteomic research is often limited and thus significantly restricts clinical and translational research. Recently, we have integrated pressure cycling technology (PCT) assisted sample preparation and SWATH‐MS to perform reproducible proteomic quantification of biopsy‐level tissue samples. Here, we further evaluated the minimal sample requirement of the PCT‐SWATH method using various types of samples, including cultured cells (HeLa, K562, and U251, 500 000 to 50 000 cells) and tissue samples (mouse liver, heart, brain, and human kidney, 3–0.2 mg). The data show that as few as 50 000 human cells and 0.2–0.5 mg of wet mouse and human tissues produced peptide samples sufficient for multiple SWATH‐MS analyses at optimal sample load applied to the system. Generally, the reproducibility of the method increased with decreasing tissue sample amounts. The SWATH maps acquired from peptides derived from samples of varying sizes were essentially identical based on the number, type, and quantity of identified peptides. In conclusion, we determined the minimal sample required for optimal PCT‐SWATH analyses, and found smaller sample size achieved higher quantitative accuracy.  相似文献

SNARE proteins are essential for intracellular membrane fusion of eukaryotes. Their assembly into stable four-helix bundles bridges membranes and may provide the energy for initiating membrane fusion. In vitro, assembly of soluble SNARE fragments is accompanied by major structural rearrangements that can be described as a folding reaction. The pathways and the thermodynamics of SNARE protein interactions, however, are not known. Here we report that assembly and dissociation of two distantly related SNARE complexes exhibit a marked hysteresis. The assembled and disassembled native states are separated by a kinetic barrier and cannot equilibrate on biologically relevant timescales. We suggest that the hysteresis is a hallmark of all SNARE complexes and that complex assembly and disassembly follow different pathways that may be independently controlled.  相似文献
