While Trk receptors can be activated in a neurotrophin-independent manner through "transactivation" by GPCR ligands, its physiological significance in the brain remains unknown. Huang et al. have now identified a novel mechanism of TrkB transactivation. They show that zinc ions can transactivate TrkB independent of neurotrophins and that such a transactivation is important for mossy fiber long-term potentiation (LTP).  相似文献

The growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens NCIMB 11764 on cyanide as the sole nitrogen source was accomplished by use of a modified fed-batch cultivation procedure. Previous studies showing that cyanide metabolism in this organism is both an oxygen-dependent and an inducible process, with CO2 and ammonia representing conversion products, were confirmed. However, washed cells (40 mg ml-1 [dry weight]) metabolized cyanide at concentrations far exceeding those previously described; 85% of 50 mM KCN was degraded in 6 h. In addition, two other C1 metabolites were detected in incubation mixtures; their identities were confirmed as formamide and formate by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrocopy, high-pressure liquid chromatography, radioisotopic trapping experiments, and other analytical means. The relative yields of all four metabolites (CO2, formamide, formate, and ammonia) were shown to be dependent on the KCN concentration and availability of oxygen; at 0.5 to 10 mM substrate, CO2 was the major C1 product, whereas at 20 and 50 mM substrate, formamide and formate were principally formed. The latter two metabolites also accumulated during prolonged anaerobic incubation, suggesting that P. fluorescens NCIMB 11764 can elaborate several pathways of cyanide conversion. One is formally similar to that proposed previously (R. E. Harris and C. J. Knowles, FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 20:337-341, 1983), involving the oxygen-dependent conversion of cyanide to CO2 and ammonia. The green algae genus Caulerpa is coenocytic, and the thallus consists of only one cell with many nuclei. It is widely distributed in the tropical seas. In the Southeast Asian waters, there are at least ten known species. Three species, particularly Caulerpa racemosa var. clavifera f. macrophysa (Kützing) Weber-van Bosse, C. racemosa var. laetevirens (Montagne) Weber-van Bosse, and Caulerpa lentillifera J. Agardh are widely consumed. The proximate analysis and secondary metabolite composition of these three species were determined to describe their lipid and nutritional values. Glycolipids and phospholipids were the major lipid classes, with significant levels of triacylglycerol. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were the major fatty acids of all the three species. Typical n-3 and n-6 PUFA such as 18:3n-3, 18:4n-3, 20:5n-3, 18;2n-6, and 20:4n-6 were found in significant amount in all these three species. All three species contained a red-pigmented secondary metabolite determined as caulerpin. All three extracts exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against human food pathogenic bacteria and anti-inflammatory activity against the murine macrophage cell line, RAW 264.7.  相似文献

Many mammals use multimodal sensory information to find their food in complex environments. We studied the roles of olfactory and visual cues in the foraging behaviour of Rousettus leschenaulti, a tongue-clicking megachiropteran bat. We conducted experiments by offering a whole fruit, mashed fruit without shape and an artificial fruit to R. leschenaulti in dim light as well as in total darkness. R. leschenaulti responded to whole guava fruit and mashed guava fruit even in total darkness, whereas, artificial fruit similar to real fruit in size, shape and structure was ignored even when illuminated. These results reveal that odour may act as the primary cue for R. leschenaulti in finding fruit.  相似文献
