Irradiated carrageenan (IC) could elicit plant growth promoting activities in plants. The effect of foliar spray of five concentrations of IC (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mg L−1) was studied on Mentha arvensis L. in terms of plant growth, physiological attributes, herbage yield and the content and yield of essential oil and its components. Un-irradiated carrageenan and deionized water had no effect on the attributes studied. GPC study revealed formation of low molecular weight fractions in irradiated samples containing less than 20,000 molecular weight oligomers which are responsible for plant growth promotion in this study. 80 mg L−1 of IC was the most effective concentration which resulted in the highest values of growth attributes, herbage yield and the content and yield of essential oil and menthol content of the oil. It also improved the leaf-nutrient contents, photosynthetic rate and other physiological parameters. 100 mg L−1 of IC did not further improve the attributes studied, but it was always better than the control. 相似文献

Heavy metal contamination in soil is an important environmental problem and it has negative effect on agriculture. Bacteria play a major role in phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soil. In this study, the effect of Bacillus licheniformis NCCP-59, a halophilic bacterium isolated from salt mines near Karak, Pakistan, were determined on a three week old greenhouse grown seedling and germinating seeds of two rice varieties (Basmati-385 (B-385) and KSK-282) in soil contaminated with different concentrations (0, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 ppm) of Nickel. Nickel significantly reduced the germination rate and germination percentage mainly at 500 and 1000 ppm. Significant decrease in ion contents (Na, K, and Ca) was observed while Ni ion concentration in the plant tissues increases as the concentration of Ni applied increases. The photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a (chl a), chlorophyll b (chl b), and carotenoids) were also decreased by the application of different concentrations of Ni. Total protein and organic nitrogen were found to be reduced at higher concentrations of Nickel. Inoculation of Bacillus Licheniformis NCCP-59 improved seed germination and biochemical attribute of the plant under Ni stress. It is clear from the results that the Bacillus Licheniformis NCCP-59 strain has the ability to protect the plants from the toxic effects of nickel and can be used for the phytoremediation of Ni contaminated soil. 相似文献

Effect of chronically administered methylxanthines on ethanol-induced motor incoordination in mice 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The effect of chronic (10 days) administration of methylxanthines, caffeine, IBMX and theophylline on acute ethanol-induced motor incoordination has been investigated in the mice. In animals that received caffeine, 45 and 90 mg/kg/24 h, ethanol, 1.5 g/kg, produced motor incoordination significantly greater compared to that in the control groups. Significantly greater ethanol-induced motor incoordination was seen in animals fed IBMX, 30 and 60 mg/kg/24 h, compared to controls. Ethanol-induced increased motor incoordination in caffeine and IBMX-fed animals was also associated with significantly greater 3H-R-PIA binding in whole brains compared to tap water controls indicating an increase in brain adenosine binding sites. However neither motor incoordination nor 3H-R-PIA binding was altered in theophylline 75 and 150 mg/kg/24 h, fed animals. The increased motor incoordination associated with increased adenosine binding sites in the brains of caffeine and IBMX-fed animals suggests an involvement of central adenosine mechanisms in the motor incoordinating effect of ethanol and further supports our earlier suggestion for the role of adenosine in some of the central effects of ethanol. 相似文献

The present study involved two pot experiments to investigate the response of mung bean to the individual or combined SO42− and selenate application under drought stress. A marked increment in biomass and NPK accumulation was recorded in mung bean seedlings fertilized with various SO42− sources, except for CuSO4. Compared to other SO42− fertilizers, ZnSO4 application resulted in the highest increase in growth attributes and shoot nutrient content. Further, the combined S and Se application (S + Se) significantly enhanced relative water content (16%), SPAD value (72%), photosynthetic rate (80%) and activities of catalase (79%), guaiacol peroxidase (53%) and superoxide dismutase (58%) in the leaves of water-stressed mung bean plants. Consequently, the grain yield of mung bean was markedly increased by 105% under water stress conditions. Furthermore, S + Se application considerably increased the concentrations of P (47%), K (75%), S (80%), Zn (160%), and Fe (15%) in mung bean seeds under drought stress conditions. These findings indicate that S + Se application potentially increases the nutritional quality of grain legumes by stimulating photosynthetic apparatus and antioxidative machinery under water deficit conditions. Improvement of potato has been accomplished using conventional and non-conventional approaches coupled with numerous tissue culture procedures. The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of gibberellic acid (GA3) on the morphogenesis of International Potato Center (CIP) potato explants and acclimatization of plantlets in the field. Nodal segments as an explant source (1–1.5 cm) were isolated from 31 CIP potato plantlets and were inoculated into Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.0 (control), 0.1, 0.5, or 1.0 mg L?1of GA3. The variation in growth parameters of the cultivars was then observed. The highest shoot induction occurred in MS medium containing 1.0 mg L?1 GA3 with an increase in the inter-nodal distance between nodes as compared to other treatments. Higher concentration (1.0 mg L?1) of GA3 significantly increased plant height and root length in the treated germplasm however; this concentration was inhibitory to the number of nodes and roots per plant. The number of leaves was significantly increased in plants receiving GA3 treatment at lower concentration (0.1 mg L?1). The 31 CIP genotypes were transplanted to the field and checked for yield quality traits. It was concluded from the results that GA3 had significant effects on morphogenesis and was effective in the acclimatization of CIP potato plantlets in field. 相似文献

Osmolytes are low molecular weight organic molecules accumulated by organisms to assist proper protein folding, and to provide protection to the structural integrity of proteins under denaturing stress conditions. It is known that osmolyte-induced protein folding is brought by unfavorable interaction of osmolytes with the denatured/unfolded states. The interaction of osmolyte with the native state does not significantly contribute to the osmolyte-induced protein folding. We have therefore investigated if different denatured states of a protein (generated by different denaturing agents) interact differently with the osmolytes to induce protein folding. We observed that osmolyte-assisted refolding of protein obtained from heat-induced denatured state produces native molecules with higher enzyme activity than those initiated from GdmCl- or urea-induced denatured state indicating that the structural property of the initial denatured state during refolding by osmolytes determines the catalytic efficiency of the folded protein molecule. Estimating the age of species or their component lineages based on sequence data is crucial for many studies in avian evolutionary biology. Although calibrations of the molecular clock in birds have been performed almost exclusively using cytochrome b (cyt b), they are commonly extrapolated to other mitochondrial genes. The existence of a large, standardized cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) library generated as a result of the DNA barcoding initiative provides the opportunity to obtain a calibration for this mitochondrial gene in birds. In this study we compare the evolutionary rate of COI relative to cyt b across ten different avian orders. We obtained divergence estimates for both genes from nearly 300 phylogenetically independent pairs of species through the analysis of almost 5000 public sequences. For each pair of species we calculated the difference in divergence between COI and cyt b. Our results indicate that COI evolves on average 14% slower than cyt b, but also reveal considerable variation both among and within avian orders, precluding the use of this value as a standard adjustment for the COI molecular clock for birds. Our findings suggest that this variation is partially explained by a clear negative relationship between the difference in divergence in these genes and the age of species. Distances for cyt b are higher than those for COI for closely related species, but the values become similar as the divergence between the species increases. This appears to be the result of a stronger pattern of negative time‐dependency in the rate of cyt b than in that of COI, a difference that could be related to lower functional constraints on a small number of sites in cyt b that allow it to initially accumulate mutations more rapidly than COI. 相似文献
