Leaves of twelve C3 species and six C4 species were examined to understand better the relationship between mesophyll cell properties and the generally high photosynthetic rates of these plants. The CO2 diffusion conductance expressed per unit mesophyll cell surface area (gCO2cell) cell was determined using measurements of the net rate of CO2 uptake, water vapor conductance, and the ratio of mesophyll cell surface area to leaf surface area (Ames/A). Ames/A averaged 31 for the C3 species and 16 for the C4 species. For the C3 species gCO2cell ranged from 0.12 to 0.32 mm s-1, and for the C4 species it ranged from 0.55 to 1.5 mm s-1, exceeding a previously predicted maximum of 0.5 mm s-1. Although the C3 species Cammissonia claviformis did not have the highest gCO2cell, the combination of the highest Ames and highest stomatal conductance resulted in this species having the greatest maximum rate of CO2 uptake in low oxygen, 93 μmol m-2 s-1 (147 mg dm-2 h-1). The high gCO2cell of the C4 species Amaranthus retroflexus (1.5 mm s-1) was in part attributable to its thin cell wall (72 nm thick).  相似文献

Daily and seasonal patterns in water flow and water potentialwere investigated for the Crassulacean acid metabolism succulentAgave deserti during an extended summer drought and for a periodfollowing rainfall. Field measurements of transpiration andof osmotic pressure changes over selected 24 h periods wereused as input variables for a computer model of water flow thatwas based on an electrical circuit analog of the whole plant.Parameters such as root resistance and tissue capacitance werealso varied to reflect the effects of changing plant or soilwater status. The model predicted internal water flow and waterpotential during the drought cycle and was used to assess therole of tissue osmotic properties in water uptake from the soiland in internal water redistribution. For plants under wet soil conditions, 55% of the night-timetranspiration was derived from water storage, this storage beingrecharged during the day. As drought progressed, transpirationand the nocturnal increase in osmotic pressure declined, althoughthe osmotic pressure itself increased. The difference in osmoticpressure between the water storage tissue and the chlorenchymacaused a net flow of water into the chlorenchyma after 3 weeksof drought, thereby increasing chlorenchyma turgor pressure.Simulations also indicated that a large increase in root resistancemust occur to prevent substantial water loss from the plantto the dry soil. After rainfall, recharge of plant water storagewas complete within one week, although full recovery in theamplitude of daily osmotic pressure variations took longer. Abstract. The productivity of the prickly-pear cactus Opuntia ficus-indica, which is cultivated worldwide for its fruits and stem segments, was predicted based on the responses of its net CO2 uptake to soil water status, air temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Each of these environmental factors was represented by an index with a maximum value of unity when that factor was not limiting net CO2 uptake over a 24-h period. The water index, the temperature index, and the PPFD index were determined for 87 sites in the contiguous United States using data from 189 weather stations and for 148 sites worldwide using data from 1464 weather stations. The product of these three indices, the environmental productivity index (EPI), was used to predict the productivity of O. ficus-indica under current climatic conditions and under those accompanying a possible increase in the atmospheric CO2 level to 650μumol mol?1. Sites with temperatures always above -10°C and hence suitable for prickly-pear cultivation numbered 37 in the United States and 110 worldwide; such sites increased by 43 and 5%, respectively, for the global warming accompanying the elevated CO2. Productivity of O. ficus-indica was at least 15 tonnes dry weight hectare?1 year?1, comparable to that of many agronomic crops, for 20 sites with temperatures always above -10°C in the contiguous United States and for 12 such sites worldwide under current climatic conditions; such sites increased by 85 and 117%, respectively, under the elevated CO2 condition, mainly because of direct effects of the atmospheric CO2 level on net CO2 uptake. In summary, simulations based on EPI indicate that O. ficus-indica may presently be advantageously cultivated over a substantial fraction of the earth's surface, such regions increasing markedly with a future doubling in atmospheric CO2 levels.  相似文献

Plants of the desert succulent Agave deserti were grown in partitionedcontainers to determine whether heterogeneity in soil moistureleads to differences in cellular development and hydraulic conductivityalong individual roots. Roots from containers with a dry distalcompartment (furthest from the shoot), a wet middle compartment, and a dry proximal compartment had distal regions (includingthe root tips) that were more suberized and lignified in theendodermis and adjacent cell layers than were root regions fromthe wet middle compartment. Proximal root regions about 40 mmfrom the succulent shoot base were also relatively unsuberized, suggesting that both external and internal supplies of waterdelayed tissue maturation. Root segments from wet middle compartmentsand from dry proximal compartments had higher hydraulic conductivitythan did the more suberized root segments from dry distal compartments.Unlike distal root segments from wet compartments, segmentsfrom dry compartments suffered no decrease in hydraulic conductivityafter immersion in mercuric chloride, suggesting that aquaporinactivity diminished for roots during drought. The possible closureof water channels could help limit root water loss to a dryingsoil. The delayed development of suberized cell layers may allowroot regions to maximize water uptake from wet soil patches(such as under rocks), and the relatively immature, absorptiveroot region near the base of the shoot may help A. deserti capturewater from a briefly wetted surface soil. Mucilage content in the stems of four sympatric cactus speciesvaried from none for Ferocactus acanthodes, 19% by dry weightfor Opuntia basilaris, 26% for Opuntia acanthocarpa, and 35%for Echinocereus engelmannii. Although the mucilage differedchemically among the species (the arabinose content ranged from17% to 51% of the sugar monomers), its relative capacitance(change in relative water content per unit change in water potential)remained about 15 Mpa–1. The relative capacitance of thewater-storage parenchyma averaged 1·04 Mpa–1 andwas consistent with the mucilage content, being lowest for F.acanthodes and highest for E. engelmannii. Mucilage isolatedfrom hydrated tissue was accompanied by solutes with an osmoticpressure of about 0·2 MPa. Such associated solutes influencethe water-release characteristics of mucilage and hence itsrole as an apoplastic capacitor. In particular, extracellularsolutes can facilitate the release of appreciable mucilage-boundwater to the cells at tissue water potentials occurring duringthe initial phases of drought. Biophysical Model of Xylem Conductance in Tracheids of the Fern Pteris vittata   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Calkin, H. W., Gibson, A. C. and Nobel, P. S. 1986. Biophysicalmodel of xylem conductance in tracheids of the fern Pteris vittata.—J.exp. Bot. 37: 1054–1064. Water movement in the xylem is often analysed with the Hagen-Poiseuilleequation, which applies to capillaries of specific diameters. However, the predicted hydraulic conductances per unit length(Kh) are generally much higher than measured values and importantanatomical details, such as the pits of tracheids, are ignored. Here, a previous model based on the Hagen-Poiseuille analysisfor water flow in the stipes of Pteris vittata is improved byincorporating the actual lumen transectional shape (usuallyelliptical or ovate) and the tapering that occurs at the endsof its tracheids, as well as using a better method for analysingthe electrical circuit analogues for the pits (pit cavitiesplus pit membranes). The measured Kh was similar to that predictedby the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for narrow stipes with theirsmall tracheids, but was only about half the measured Kh forlarge stipes. Correcting for the actual shape changed Kh 2-to 3-fold for tracheids with elliptic and ovate transections. For the smaller diameter tracheids, most of the flow resistancewas from the lumens but for the larger tracheids most was fromthe pit membranes. For all stipes the pit cavities accountedfor 12–22% of the total resistance. When the pit membraneswere partially digested away with cellulase, Kh increased about66%, consistent with the deduced resistance of this part ofthe pathway. The present model incorporating realistic anatomicaldetails allowed reasonable predictions of the hydraulic conductanceper unit length over a wide size range of stipes for this fern. Abstract Net CO2 uptake over 24 h periods for shoots of Agave deserti, Ferocactus acanthodes, and Opuntia ficus-indica was measured under the ranges of water status, air temperature, and photo-synthetically active radiation (PAR) that occur in the south-western U.S.A. An environmental productivity index (EPI) was constructed indicating the overall influence of these three factors on net CO2 uptake. Using growth chambers whose conditions were changed monthly to simulate the environmental conditions at a field site, the observed shoot dry weight increases per unit surface area changed in concert with monthly changes in EPI. The observed dry weight gain of the shoot was 17–19% lower than the predicted shoot net CO2 uptake, which could be accounted for by carbon diversion to the roots. Mean monthly EPI was also predicted for 21 sites in the south-western U.S.A. All three species had low EPIs in the Colorado River basin, which has low annual rainfall and high summer temperatures, and in the north-central part of the region, which has low temperatures and low PAR during winter when water is available. The two native species, A. deserti and F. acanthodes, had high EPIs beyond their range in coastal southern California, where competition by other vegetation for PAR may limit net CO2 uptake. Such regions as well as south-central California and south-central Arizona had high EPIs for all three species, indicating that these areas would be appropriate for the cultivation of O. ficus-indica.  相似文献

Water uptake by Agave deserti and Ferocatus acanthodes was predictedusing a two-dimensional simulation model in which the soil arounda plant was divided into a series of layers and concentric cylindricalshells. Root lengths in 0.05 m thick soil layers were determinedfor both species in the field, where mean root depths were only0.11 m for A. deserti and 0.10 m for F. acanthodes. For a yearwith average precipitation (159 mm), 42 per cent of the annualprecipitation could be taken up by A. deserti and 25 per centby F. acanthodes. Predicted water uptake by both species wasgreater from the upper soil layers (above 0.15 m) for averageand dry years, but was greater from the deeper layers for awet year. The actual root distribution for both species ledto more water uptake than when all of the roots were in a singlelayer. The large number of days per year when the soil temperaturesexceeded 57 °C (the temperature for 50 per cent inhibitionof uptake of a vital stain by root cells) may exclude rootsfrom the 0.00–0.05 m soil layer, even though water uptakewhen all roots were located there was predicted to be maximal. Therefore, the observed root distribution of A. deserti andF. acanthodes may be limited near the soil surface by high temperaturesand at maximum depths by water availability for all but wetyears.
