Seals were an important resource for coastal communities in prehistoric -times and were hunted in the United Kingdom until recently. Depopulation of remote islands as well as legal protection has allowed British seal stocks to increase greatly. Seals have been regarded by fishermen as serious competitors, but increasingly the public sees them as part of the national and global heritage to be carefully conserved.  相似文献

1. In semi‐arid climates, seasonally‐flowing streams provide most of the water required for human use, but knowledge of how water extraction affects ecological processes is limited. Predicted alterations in stream flows associated with the impacts of climate change further emphasize the need to understand these processes. Benthic algae are an important base for stream food webs, but we have little knowledge of how algae survive dry periods or respond to altered flow regimes. 2. We sampled 19 streams within the Grampians National Park, south‐eastern Australia and included four components: a survey of different drought refuges (e.g. permanent pools, dry biofilm on stones and dry leaf packs) and associated algal taxa; a survey of algal regrowth on stones after flows recommenced to determine which refuges contributed to regrowth; reciprocal transplant experiments to determine the relative importance of algal drift and regrowth from dry biofilm in recolonization; direct measurement of algal drift to determine taxonomic composition in relation to benthic assemblage composition. 3. Algae showed little specificity for drought refuges but did depend on them; no species were found that were not present in at least one of the perennial pool, dry biofilm or leaf pack refuges. Perennial pools were most closely correlated with the composition of algal assemblages once flows resumed, but the loss or gain of perennial pools that might arise from stream regulation is unlikely to affect the composition of algal regrowth. However, regulated streams were associated with strong increases in algal density in dry biofilm, including increased densities of Cyanobacteria. 4. A model for algal recolonization in seasonally‐flowing streams identified three pathways for algal recolonization (drift‐dependent, dry biofilm‐dependent and contributions from both), depending on whether streams are diatom‐dominated or dominated by filamentous algae. The model predicted the effects of changes to stream flow regimes on benthic algal recolonization and provides a basis for hypotheses testable in streams elsewhere.  相似文献

Blue Ducks Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos (Anatidae), an IUCN Red Listed Endangered species, reside in headwaters of New Zealand rivers and feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates. However, whether such food items are detected by tactile or visual cues is unknown. That Blue Ducks may use tactile cues when foraging is suggested by the presence of specialized flaps of thickened, keratinized epidermis containing Herbst's corpuscles along the ventral margins of the upper mandibles near the bill tip. Similar bill flaps are found only in one other duck species, Pink-eared Ducks Malacorhynchus membranaceus , that surface filter-feed on a range of planktonic organisms. Using an ophthalmoscopic reflex technique we determined the visual fields of both species. In Blue Ducks the eyes are frontally placed resulting in a relatively wide binocular field into which the narrow tapering bill intrudes. There is a large blind area to the rear of the head. This visual field topography is similar to that of other visually guided foragers including those that take mobile prey from the water column, e.g. penguins (Spheniscidae). By contrast, Pink-eared Duck visual fields show features found in other tactile feeding ducks: a narrow frontal binocular field with the bill falling at the periphery, and comprehensive visual coverage of the celestial hemisphere. We conclude that although Blue Ducks may take prey from rock surfaces they are primarily visual feeders of the water column and we suggest therefore that their foraging may be significantly disrupted by changes in water clarity. This introduces a previously unconsidered factor into the selection of sites for population enhancement or re-introductions, a current conservation focus.  相似文献

Abstract An industrial crane was installed in the Daintree lowland rainforest in 1998 to provide a new means of accessing the canopy. Approximately 0.95 ha of forest, including 680 trees of 82 species with a diameter at breast height of greater than 10 cm, are accessible using the crane. The site was hit by a Category 3 Cyclone in 1999 and has shown a remarkable rate of recovery. The crane has been used for a very wide range of research including tree physiology and ecology, interactions with vertebrate and invertebrate biodiversity and studies of carbon and water fluxes. Results from studies on this crane and 11 other cranes around the world are changing views of the importance of the rainforest canopy.  相似文献

Differences in how raptors hunt and what they catch are correlated with size-independent differences in length of the small intestine, the region of the digestive tract responsible for food absorption. The study examined the functional significance of these differences among ten raptor species. Dry matter apparent digestive efficiency was calculated for each species fed a diet of day-old cockerels. For Falconiformes and Strigiformes, efficiencies varied between 75% and 82%, digestive efficiency being positively correlated with intestine length.
Generalist species, with a wide prey spectrum and feeding on relatively easily caught prey and carrion, had long intestines and high digestive efficiencies. Raptors specializing on fast-moving, avian prey had short intestines and reduced digestive efficiency. The Peregrine Falco peregrinus and the Common Buzzard Buteo buteo were used as examples of specialist and generalist feeders, respectively. Rabbit and pigeon were fed to both. Buzzards digested both diets more efficiently than Peregrines. Body-mass changes were used to examine the nutritional value of the two diets to each species. Buzzards gained body-mass when eating rabbit, Peregrines lost mass. Both species gained mass when feeding on pigeon. It seems that consideration of diet quality, not just quantity, is essential in understanding raptor food requirements. Generalist raptors have high efficiencies on several diets, specialists compensate for their reduced efficiency by eating food of high nutritional quality. Satellite telemetry was used to identify the foraging zones of Shy Albatrosses Diomedea cauta breeding at two sites off Tasmania, Australia (Albatross Island in western Bass Strait and Pedra Branca to the south) to assess their level of interaction with longline fisheries. Adult birds from both colonies fed locally both in and outside the breeding season. Breeding birds from Albatross Island foraged over the Australian continental shelf or slope waters off northwest Tasmania, while those from Pedra Branca foraged between the colony and the southeastern edge of the continental shelf. The distances travelled by the birds and the duration of their foraging trips varied during the breeding cycle and tended to decrease as eggs approached hatching. Adults which were tracked near the end of the breeding season (March-April, n = 7 birds) deserted their chicks prematurely, and while dispersing further than incubating or brooding birds, they remained over the continental shelf and slope waters off southeast Australia. Home range analyses indicated 41% overlap between foraging zones of birds during successive breeding stages. Dispersal during the postbreeding period extended the foraging zones with less overlap between individuals (10% for Albatross Island and 19% for Pedra Branca). The recent contraction of the Japanese Southern Bluefin Tuna longline fishery to the south and east coasts of Tasmania has resulted in extensive overlap with adult Shy Albatrosses from Pedra Branca, but appears to pose a minimal threat to adult birds from Albatross Island. Coupled with the concomitant increase in the Australian domestic tuna longlining industry, adult Shy Albatrosses from southern Tasmania (Pedra Branca and the Mewstone) are vulnerable to incidental capture through out their annual cycle.  相似文献

Isopodichnus stromnessi sp. nov. from the Lower Stromness Flags of Orkney is described in detail, and the range of variation in the traces ascribed to different habits of different sized individuals producing the traces. Activity diagrams illustrate scme of the burrowing habits of the organism. Isopodichnus is typical of non-marine strata, particularly those of shallow impermanent lacustrine environments, and can be distinguished from Cruziana on the basis of the shape of the trace ending. AsSociated burrows are briefly described and indicate the presence of a hitherto undescribed invertebrate fauna associated with the Orcadian flagstone sequence of the Middle Old Red Sandstone.  相似文献

Long-distance migrants have evolved complex strategies for the timing of their annual moult, fattening and migration cycles. These strategies are likely to vary at different stages of a bird's life. Ringing data on 6079 Grey Plovers Pluvialis squatarola , caught on the Wash, England, between 1959 and 1996, were analysed to relate migratory strategies to patterns of primary moult and body mass changes. Adults returning from breeding grounds had a shorter and delayed primary moult (duration 90 days, starting date 19 August) in comparison with over-summering birds (duration 109 days, starting date 5 June). Three categories of migrant adults were identified on the basis of primary moult and body mass: (1) birds which did not moult, but increased body mass and migrated further south; (2) birds which moulted 1–3 inner primaries, suspended moult, increased body mass and migrated; and (3) birds which completed or suspended moult and wintered locally. In birds of the second category, timing of primary moult and body mass increase overlapped. Among wintering birds, 38% were in suspended moult. Ninety-six per cent of birds that suspended moult at the beginning of winter were males and almost all completed moult in spring. Grey Plovers which left Britain in autumn had an average body mass of 280 g, enough to reach southern Morocco without refuelling. Both wintering adults and first-year birds showed a prewinter body mass increase, peaking in December. Adults had a synchronized premigratory body mass increase in May, which suggested a negligible presence of African migrants. The average departure mass for spring migration, estimated at 316 g, would allow birds to fly non-stop to the Siberian breeding grounds in western Taymyr.  相似文献

Abstract There is less certainty about the impact of climate change on tropical rainforests than on temperate forests because of the comparative lack of background data and because few large scale experiments have been, and are being, carried out in tropical rainforests. Many of the factors critical to the future of tropical rainforests concern canopies, the key processes that take place there, and the roles and interactions of canopy biodiversity. In particular there are almost no data on how forest canopies and processes are changing with increased carbon dioxide levels. The implications of elevated carbon dioxide, climatic stress and related changes in water‐use efficiency, nutrient availability and other such changes are discussed particularly with references to Australia's tropical rainforests.  相似文献

Morphometric analysis of growth in Aulacopleura konincki reveals several important features: (1) morphological variability is approximately constant throughout growth, increasing slightly in later ontogeny; (2) shape is more tightly constrained than the numbers of postcephalic segments, which can be quite variable; and (3) a major ontogenetic transition occurs at glabellar lengths of about 1.7 mm. This transition divides the ontogeny into two distinct growth phases, is smooth rather than abrupt, and is expressed as changes in growth trajectories, especially in the pygidium. The transition is not strictly correlated with the number of thoracic or pygidial segments. These results suggest a re-evaluation of the concepts of meraspid and holaspid growth stages in A. konincki , using growth trajectories rather than thoracic segment number to define the stages. Developmental flexibility in holaspid segment numbers in this phylogenetically advanced trilobite suggests that environmental factors, rather than phylogenetic constraint, may explain variations in segment production patterns within some advanced Trilobita.
