Random deviations from the perfect symmetry of normally bilaterally symmetrical characters exist during individual development as a result of various environmental conditions. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is often used as a measurement of developmental instability, and within-environmental variation (CVe) is also considered as an indicator of developmental deviations. These two parameters may indicate the quality of the environmental habitat of organisms. For herbivore insects, such as aphids, any change in their host plants conditions is important and directly affects their development. The presented investigation revealed that both Lead (Pb) and Copper (Cu) accumulation in different host plants resulted in a significant amount of deviations from bilateral symmetry in cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae). Cabbage aphid populations showed higher FA and CVe on heavy metal accumulated cabbage and radish than on non-contaminated cabbage and radish plants. However, the pattern between developmental instability and fitness measurements was inconsistent. Thus, this study does not support the hypothesis that asymmetry is a valuable bioindicator of developmental instability.  相似文献

Within the nematode class Chromadorea, the suborder Tylenchina is an ecologically and morphologically diverse assemblage of nematodes that includes free‐living microbivores, fungivores and various types of plant parasites. A recent nematode classification system based largely on SSU rDNA phylogenetic trees classified suborder Tylenchina to include four infraorders: Panagrolaimomorpha, Cephalobomorpha, Tylenchomorpha and Drilonematomorpha, and phylogenetic relationships among species of these infraorders have not always been robustly supported. In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of three Tylenchina species (Aphelenchus avenae [Aphelenchidae, Tylenchomorpha], Halicephalobus gingivalis, Panagrellus redivivus [Panagrolaimomorpha]) and the partial genome sequence of Acrobeles complexus (Cephalobomorpha) and used these sequences to infer phylogenetic relationships among representatives of the Tylenchina and other nematodes. Phylogenetic analysis of amino acid sequences for 12 protein‐coding genes of 100 nematode species supports monophyly of: Chromadorea, Spiruromorpha, Oxyuridomorpha, Ascarididae + Toxocaridae + Anisakidae, Meloidogynidae + Pratylenchidae + Heteroderidae and Aphelenchoidea. Bayesian and maximum‐likelihood analyses also show the nested position of Diplogasteromorpha within Rhabditomorpha, and Rhigonematomorpha within Ascaridomorpha. These analyses also show non‐monophyly of: clade III, Ancylostomatidae, Panagrolaimomorpha, Tylenchina and Tylenchomorpha. Reconstructed mitochondrial genome phylogeny also revealed that among two main Tylenchomorpha groups, the monophyletic group representing Aphelenchoidea species was sister to the large clade consisting of Ascaridomorpha, Diplogasteromorpha, Rhabditomorpha and Rhigonematomorpha and some Panagrolaimomorpha species, whereas Tylenchoidea species were sister to the most inclusive assemblage containing all infraordinal groups of Chromadorea, except for P. redivivus (Panagrolaimomorpha) and Acrobeles complexus (Cephalobomorpha). The monophyly of Aphelenchoidea (i.e. sister relationship between Aphelenchidae and Aphelenchoididae) recovered in this study indicates that similarity in certain aspects of pharyngeal structure between these two families appears best explained by common ancestry, rather than convergent evolution.  相似文献

This study examined the ability of duckweed (Lemna minor) to remove soluble lead from water. The duckweed was obtained from the Devils Lake wastewater treatment plant in North Dakota. The viable aquatic plants were exposed to a single dose of lead (from Pb(NO3)2) at a concentration of 5.0 mg/l for a time period of 21 days. Lead concentrations were measured in the water daily and in the biomass at the conclusion of the experiment. All measurements were done in triplicate and performed in accordance with standard methods. These data were used to calculate the removal efficiency with respect to time, and to provide the necessary empirical constants to model the removal behavior. Viable biomass removed 85–90% of the lead, viable duckweed previously exposed to lead removed 70–80% of the lead, non-viable biomass (control group) removed 60–75% of the lead, and there was no removal in the ‘no-biomass' control group. Based on these results we conclude that the viable biomass is effective in removing lead present at sub-lethal levels.  相似文献

The tumor suppressor morphogen, Patched (Ptc), has an extensive homology to the Niemann-Pick-C 1 (NPC1) protein. The NPC disease is a paediatric, progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder thought to be due to an abnormal accumulation of cholesterol in neurons. Here, we report that patched mutant adults develop a progressive neurodegenerative disease and their brain contains membranous and lamellar inclusions. There is also a significant reduction in the number of synaptic terminals in the brain of the mutant adults. Interestingly, feeding cholesterol to wild type flies generates inclusions in the brain, but does not cause the disease. However, feeding cholesterol to mutant flies increases synaptic connections and suppresses the disease. Our results suggest that sequestration of cholesterol in the mutant brain in the form of membranous material and inclusions affects available pool of cholesterol for cellular functions. This, in turn, negatively affects the synaptic number and contributes to the disease-state. Consistent with this, in ptc mutants there is a reduction in the pool of cholesterol esters, and cholesterol-mediated suppression of the disease accompanies an increase in cholesterol esters. We further show that Ptc does not function directly in this process since gain of function for Hedgehog also induces the same disease with a reduction in the level of cholesterol esters. We believe that loss of function for ptc causes neurodegeneration via two distinct ways: de-repression of genes that interfere with lipid trafficking, and de-repression of genes outside of the lipid trafficking; the functions of both classes of genes ultimately converge on synaptic connections.  相似文献

A participant-observer approach was used to explore an online chat community. The chat room was defined in terms of its construction and maintenance of speaker identities, and the user-chat room interface was examined with the aim of exploring how notions of selfhood can be better understood. Chat room audiences were then discussed within the framework of delineating different levels of virtual audiences and outlining processes by which these different levels interact. Finally, formal and informal discursive constraints were explored, and conclusions drawn on the ways that chat room users deal with constraints on their chat activity. Implications for understanding internet communication as well as discourse in general are discussed.  相似文献
