Many sex differences in the regulation of reproductive functionin rats are the result of a differentiation of the brain whichoccurs neonatally. Although injections of either androgens orestrogens are capable during the neonatal period of alteringhypothalamic systems involved in reproductive behavior and gonadotropinregulation, the physiological role of each type of hormone hasnot been clearly established. In both sexes, circulating estrogensare normally kept from interacting with estrogen receptors inthe limbic brain by the high levels of alpha-fetoprotein inthe blood. The local aromatization of androgens in the braincould circumvent alpha-fetoprotein, since androgens do not bindto this serum protein. The "paromatization hypothesis" statesthat testosterone, which is abundant in neonatal male circulationbut absent in females, is locally converted to estradiol inthe limbic brain. There it binds to estrogen receptor proteinsto produce tissue differentiation. The ontogeny of estradiolbinding proteins in limbic areas is consistent with the aromatizationhypothesis, with a rapid increase in receptor levels occurringshortly after birth. Also, the presence of endogenous estradiol-receptorcomplexes has been demonstrated in the cell nuclei of male neonatesbut not female neonales. Furthermore, the presence of estradiolbinding proteins in other regions of the neonatal male and femalebrain suggests an additional role of estradiol. unknown as ofyet. Several studies with agents which block the aromatizationof androgens to estrogens or the binding of estrogens to theirreceptors are consistent with the aromatization hypothesis,since these agents prevent the differentiation of intact neonatalmales. However, specific androgen binding proteins are alsopresent in neonatal brains, and androgen-receptor complexescan be found in cell nuclei of neonates after an injection oftritiated androgen. The possible involvement of these receptorsin sexual differentiation of the brain is suggested by the findingthat an antiandrogen inhibits both the binding of androgens(but not estrogens) and the differentiation of males.  相似文献

Abstract:  Over the past three decades Ordovician pteraspidomorphs (armoured jawless fish) have been recorded from the fringes of the Gondwana palaeocontinent, in particular Australia and South America. These occurrences are dominated by arandaspid agnathans, the oldest known group of vertebrates with extensive biomineralisation of the dermoskeleton. Here we describe specimens of arandaspid agnathans, referable to the genus Sacabambaspis Gagnier, Blieck and Rodrigo, from the Ordovician of Oman, which represent the earliest record of pteraspidomorphs from the Arabian margin of Gondwana. These are among the oldest arandaspids known, and greatly extend the palaeogeographical distribution of the clade around the periGondwanan margin. Their occurrence within a very narrow, nearshore ecological niche suggests that similar Middle Ordovician palaeoenvironmental settings should be targeted for further sampling.  相似文献

Sugarcane is a proven biofuel feedstock and accounts for about 40% of the biofuel production worldwide. It has a more favorable energy input/output ratio than that of corn, the other major biofuel feedstock. The rich resource of genetic diversity and the plasticity of autopolyploid genomes offer a wealth of opportunities for the application of genomics and technologies to address fundamental questions in sugarcane towards maximizing biomass production. In a workshop on sugarcane engineering held at Rutgers University, we identified research areas and emerging technologies that could have significant impact on sugarcane improvement. Traditional plant physiological studies and standardized phenotypic characterization of sugarcane are essential for dissecting the developmental processes and patterns of gene expression in this complex polyploid species. Breeder friendly DNA markers associated with target traits will enhance selection efficiency and shorten the long breeding cycles. Integration of cold tolerance from Saccharum spontaneum and Miscanthus has the potential to expand the geographical range of sugarcane production from tropical and subtropical regions to temperate zones. The Flex-stock and mix-stock concepts could be solutions for sustaining local biorefineries where no single biofuel feedstock could provide consistent year-round supplies. The ever increasing capacities of genomics and biotechnologies pave the way for fully exploring these potentials to optimize sugarcane for biofuel production.  相似文献

1. Sedimentary remains of aquatic plants, both vegetative (turions, leaves, spines) and reproductive (fruits, seeds, pollen), may provide a record of temporal changes in the submerged vegetation of lakes. An independent assessment of the degree to which these remains reflect past floristic change is, however, rarely possible. 2. By exploiting an extensive series of historical plant records for a small shallow lake we compare plant macrofossil (three cores) and pollen (one core) profiles with the documented sequence of submerged vegetation change since c. 1750 AD. The data set is based on 146 site visits with 658 observations including 42 taxa classified as aquatic, spanning 250 years. 3. Approximately 40% of the historically recorded aquatic taxa were represented by macro‐remains. In general macrofossils underestimated past species diversity, with pondweeds (three of eight historically recorded Potamogeton species were found) particularly poorly represented. Nonetheless, several taxa not reported from historical surveys (e.g. Myriophyllum alterniflorum and Characeae) were present in the sediment record. 4. The pollen record revealed taxa which left no macro‐remains (e.g. Littorella uniflora), and the macrofossil record provided improved taxonomic resolution for some taxa (e.g. Potamogeton) and a more reliable record of persistence, appearance and loss of others (e.g. Myriophyllum spp. and Nymphaeaceae). 5. Detrended correspondence analysis indicated that changes in the community composition evidenced by the palaeolimnological and historical records were synchronous and of a similar magnitude. Both records pointed to a major change at around 1800, with the historical record suggesting a more abrupt change than the sedimentary data. There was good agreement on a subsequent change c. 1930. 6. The palaeolimnological data did not provide a complete inventory of historically recorded species. Nevertheless, these results suggest that combined macrofossil and pollen records provide a reliable indication of temporal change in the dominant components of the submerged and floating‐leaved aquatic vegetation of shallow lakes. As such palaeolimnology may provide a useful tool for establishing community dynamics and successions of plants over decadal to centennial timescales.  相似文献

Four pot experiments are reported in which Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst) seedlings, of different nutrient status, were treated with acid mist for one growing season in open-top chambers (OTCs). Combinations of H+, SO42−, NH4+ and NO3 were applied at different frequencies of application and supplying different doses of S and N kg ha−1. Plant growth, visible injury, frost hardiness and nutrient status were observed. These experiments were undertaken to improve our understanding of the interaction of environmental factors such as nutrition and mist-exposure frequency on seedling response to N and S deposition.
Both acidity (pH 2·7) and SO42− ions were necessary to induce visible injury. Mist containing SO42−, H+ and to a lesser extent NH4+ significantly reduced winter frost hardiness. Increasing the misting frequency, and to a lesser extent the overall dose, increased the likelihood of acid mist causing visible injury and reducing frost hardiness. Post-planting stress, low N status and needle juvenility increased the likelihood of acid mist causing visible injury. Increased plant vitality, adequate N status and growth rate reduced the likelihood of acid-mist-induced reductions in frost hardiness.
Principles underlying the responses of spruce seedlings treated in controlled conditions to acid mist are discussed.  相似文献

1. Understanding the processes that structure community assembly across landscapes is fundamental to ecology and for predicting and managing the consequences of anthropogenically induced changes to ecosystems. 2. We assessed the community similarity of fish, macroinvertebrate and vegetation communities against geographic distances ranging from 4 to 480 km (i.e. distance–decay relationships) to determine the balance between local environmental factors and regional dispersal processes, and thus whether species‐sorting (niche processes) or dispersal limitation (neutral processes) was more important in structuring these assemblages in Australia’s wet‐dry tropics. We investigated whether the balance between niche and dispersal processes depended on the degree of hydrological connectivity, predicting that dispersal processes would be more important at connected sites, and also whether there was spatial concordance among these three assemblage types. 3. There was significant but weak spatial concordance among the study communities, suggesting limited potential for surrogacy among them. Distance–decay in community similarity was not observed for any study assemblage at perennial sites, suggesting dispersal was not limiting and assemblages were structured more strongly by local niche processes at these connected sites. At intermittent sites, weak distance–decay relationships for each assemblage type were confounded by significant relationships with environmental dissimilarity, suggesting that dispersal limitation contributed, albeit weakly, to niche processes in structuring our three study assemblages at disconnected sites. 4. Two environmental factors, flow regime and channel width, explained significant proportions of variation in all three assemblages, potentially contributing to the observed spatial concordance between them and representing local environmental gradients along which these communities re‐assemble after the wet season, according to niche rather than dispersal processes.  相似文献

Mediterranean environments are characterised by cool wet winters and hot dry summers. While native vegetation in Mediterranean-climatic zones usually comprises a mixture of perennial and annual plants, agricultural development in the Mediterranean-climatic region of Australia has led to the clearing of the perennial vegetation and its replacement with annual crops and pastures. In the Mediterranean environments of southern Australia this has led to secondary (dryland) salinisation. In order to slow land degradation, perennial trees and pasture species are being reintroduced to increase the productivity of the saline areas. The annual crops and pastures that form the backbone of dryland farming systems in the Mediterranean-climatic zone of Australia are grown during the cool wet winter months on incoming rainfall and mature during spring and early summer as temperatures and rates of evaporation rise and rainfall decreases. Thus, crop and pasture growth is usually curtailed by terminal drought. Where available, supplementary irrigation in spring can lead to significant increases in yield and water use efficiency. In order to sustain production of annual crops in Mediterranean environments, both agronomic and genetic options have been employed. An analysis of the yield increases of wheat in Mediterranean-climatic regions shows that there has generally been an increase in the yields over the past decades, albeit at a lower rate than in more temperate regions. Approximately half of this increase can be attributed to agronomic improvements and half to genetic improvements. The agronomic improvements that have been utilised to sustain the increased yields include earlier planting to more closely match crop growth to rainfall distribution, use of fertilisers to increase early growth, minimum tillage to enable earlier planting and increase plant transpiration at the expense of soil evaporation, rotations to reduce weed control and disease incidence, and use of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to reduce losses from weeds, insects and disease. Genetic improvements include changing the phenological development to better match the rainfall, increased early vigour, deeper rooting, osmotic adjustment, increased transpiration efficiency and improved assimilate storage and remobilisation. Mediterranean environments that are subjected annually to terminal drought can be both environmentally and economically sustainable, but to maximise plant water use efficiency while maintaining crop productivity requires an understanding of the interaction between genotypes, environment and management.  相似文献
