Abstract. 1. Environmental cues are known to influence oviposition behaviour in mosquitoes, with important consequences for larval survival and insect population dynamics. Enriched microhabitats have been shown to be preferred oviposition sites.
2. In a field experiment designed to determine whether ovipositing mosquitoes are sensitive to different levels of nutrient enrichment, new pitcher-plant ( Sarracenia purpurea ) leaves were opened and enriched with 0, 2, or 20 dead ants, and the number of pitcher-plant mosquito ( Wyeomyia smithii ) larvae resulting from subsequent oviposition were measured.
3. Oviposition rates were higher in leaves with low levels of enrichment (0 and 2 ants per leaf), although larval development was enhanced at the highest enrichment level.
4. Results suggest that, although these mosquito larvae are nutrient limited, ovipositing females preferentially avoid highly enriched leaves. This counterintuitive result may be due to low oxygen concentrations or a masked cue in enriched leaves, and contrasts with other oviposition studies. 相似文献

1. Submerged macrophyte and phytoplankton components of eutrophic, shallow lakes have frequently undergone dynamic changes in composition and abundance with important consequences for lake functioning and stability. However, because of a paucity of long‐term survey data, we know little regarding the nature, direction and sequencing of such changes over decadal–centennial or longer timescales. 2. To circumvent this problem, we analysed multiple (n = 5) chronologically correlated sediment cores for plant macro‐remains and a single core for pollen and diatoms from one small, shallow, English lake (Felbrigg Hall Lake, Norfolk, U.K.), documenting 250 years of change to macrophyte and algal communities. 3. All five cores showed broadly similar stratigraphic changes in macrophyte remains with three distinct phases of macrophyte development: Myriophyllum–Chara–Potamogeton (c. pre‐1900), to Ceratophyllum–Chara–Potamogeton (c. 1900–1960) and finally to Zannichellia–Potamogeton (c. post‐1960). Macrophyte species richness declined from at least 10 species pre‐1900 to just four species at the present day. Additionally, in the final Zannichellia–Potamogeton phase, a directional shift between epi‐benthic and phytoplankton‐based primary production was indicated by the diatom data. 4. Based on macrophyte–seasonality relationships established for the region, concomitant with the final shift to Zannichellia–Potamogeton, we infer a reduction in the seasonal duration of plant dominance (plant‐covered period). Furthermore, we hypothesise that this change in species composition resulted in a situation whereby macrophyte populations were seasonally ‘sandwiched’ between two phytoplankton peaks in spring and late summer as observed in the contemporary lake. 5. We suggest that eutrophication‐induced reductions in macrophyte species richness, especially if the number of plant‐seasonal strategies is reduced, may constrict the plant growing season. In turn, this may render a shallow lake increasingly vulnerable to seasonal invasions of phytoplankton resulting in further species losses in the plant community. Thus, as part of a slow (over perhaps 10–100s of years) and self‐perpetuating process, macrophytes may be gradually pushed out by phytoplankton without the need for a perturbation as required in the alternative stable states model of plant loss. 相似文献

Many of the UK’s seabird species have displayed high variation in breeding success since the 1980s, largely due to changes in the availability of Lesser Sandeels Ammodytes marinus, their main prey. During this time, Arctic Skuas Stercorarius parasiticus experienced a rapid decline in the UK and the species has subsequently been placed on the Red List of birds of conservation concern. Although shortage of Lesser Sandeels is likely to be an influential factor, the Arctic Skua’s breeding range overlaps with that of the Great Skua Stercorarius skua, a larger bird with a more varied diet, and interspecific interactions for nesting habitat may exert an additional pressure on Arctic Skua breeding populations. Results from four censuses, spanning 21 years, were used to model habitat use and analyse distributional change in nesting Arctic Skuas at a major colony located on Fetlar, Shetland, Scotland. The decline in Arctic Skuas was not uniform across the island and competition with Great Skuas for nest‐sites appears to have influenced localized breeding distribution. By 2006, Arctic Skuas had been almost entirely excluded from shrub heath, blanket bog and coastal heath habitats, which were identified as preferred habitat in 1986. In 2006, Arctic Skua breeding territories were mainly restricted to one core area of preferred habitat where over 90% nested in high density as this habitat became increasingly occupied by Great Skuas. The more generalist foraging habit of the Great Skua allowed the population to grow rapidly as numbers of the more specialist Arctic Skua decreased during times of low sandeel availability. Our model suggests that both interspecific competition for territories with Great Skuas and food limitation have played important roles in the decline of Arctic Skuas on Fetlar. 相似文献

Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 191–199. Based on the differences in their relative size, overall shape, structure and the degree of development of an outer calcified covering, lower jaws of the Ammonoidea have been classified into four morphotypes: normal, anaptychus, aptychus and rhynchaptychus types. However, detailed microstructural and mineralogical comparison of these morphotypes has not yet been addressed. This article documents the results of SEM and XRD observations of the lower jaws of three Late Cretaceous ammonoid species belonging to the Tetragonitoidea (Anagaudryceras limatum) and Desmoceratoidea (Pachydiscus kamishakensis and Damesites aff. sugata), based on excellent material preserved in situ within the body chamber, and retaining an aragonitic shell wall. The lower jaws of the three species are assigned to an intermediate form between anaptychus and aptychus types for the first two species and the rhynchaptychus type for the third species. Their black, presumably originally chitinous outer lamella is wholly covered with a calcareous layer. The calcareous layer is composed of aragonite in D. aff. sugata and A. limatum, and calcite in P. kamishakensis. The microstructure of the outer calcareous layer differs among the three species, i.e. granular in A. limatum, spherulitic prismatic in D. sugata, and prismatic in P. kamishakensis, all of which can be distinguished from the lamellar and spongy structure of the outer‐paired calcitic plates of the typical aptychus‐type lower jaws in some Jurassic and Cretaceous Ammonitina and Ancyloceratina. Water limitation is one of the most important factors limiting crop productivity world-wide and has likely been an important selective regime influencing the evolution of plant physiology. Understanding the genetic and physiological basis of drought adaptation is therefore important for improving crops as well as for understanding the evolution of wild species. Here, results are presented from quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping of flowering time (a drought escape mechanism) and carbon stable isotope ratio (δ13C) (a drought-avoidance mechanism) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Whole-genome scans were performed using multiple-QTL models for both additive and epistatic QTL effects. We mapped five QTL affecting flowering time and five QTL affecting δ13C, but two genomic regions contained QTL with effects on both traits, suggesting a potential pleiotropic relationship. In addition, we observed QTL–QTL interaction for both traits. Two δ13C QTL were captured in near-isogenic lines to further characterize their physiological basis. These experiments revealed allelic effects on δ13C through the upstream trait of stomatal conductance with subsequent consequences for whole plant transpiration efficiency and water loss. Our findings document considerable natural genetic variation in whole-plant, drought resistance physiology of Arabidopsis and highlight the value of quantitative genetic approaches for exploring functional relationships regulating physiology. 相似文献

Additive effect of teratocyte and calyx fluid from Cotesia plutellae on immunosuppression of Plutella xylostella 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. Teratocytes are cells that originate from the extra-embryonic tissues of some hymenopteran parasitoids, typically dissociate upon hatching, and develop in the host haemolymph. They are considered to be involved in parasitoid larval nutrient uptake, host immunosuppression and/or repression of competing parasitoid development. Teratocytes of the parasitoid, Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are found in its natural host, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and can be cultured in vitro . The present study demonstrates that teratocytes of C. plutellae possess a significantly depressive effect on host cellular immunity. When the hosts are preinjected with 200 cultured teratocytes (corresponding to the normal number of teratocytes released during wasp hatching), haemocyte nodulation is inhibited by approximately 40%, with younger teratocytes being more potent than older ones. Similarly, the medium in which teratocytes are cultured has similar immunosuppressive properties. In comparison, calyx fluid extracted from the C. plutellae ovary also has an immunosuppressive effect on P. xylostella . These two maternal (calyx fluid) and embryonic (teratocytes) factors are additive and result in a reduced level of nodule formation equivalent to that induced by natural parasitization. However, the immunosuppression of the parasitized P. xylostella does not appear to be due to inhibition of phospholipase A2 , an immune mediator, because injection of arachidonic acid failed to restore haemocyte nodulation capability. 相似文献
