A study of soil and vegetation characteristics within a small area of coastal heath near The Gap, Albany, Western Australia, showed that significant differences exist in plant species composition between podzol and non-podzol (calcareous) soil environments. Leaf extracts of common plant species from podzol, non-podzol and transitional soil sites were tested for their ability to complex with iron. Only those species on the podzol and transitional soils proved to have this ability. Soil column experiments tested the rates of iron mobilization and results indicate that the podzol vegetation elutant solution, which was found to contain the iron-complexing agent gallic acid, was superior to the non-podzol vegetation elutant solution in the rate at which it mobilized iron. It is suggested that initiation of podzolization is due to the presence of gallic acid in the leaves of certain of the species in the coastal heath association, and that the pattern of podzol distribution can be linked to both plant succession and inherent differences in soil parent material.  相似文献

Male reproductive success in higher plants depends largely on the fates of pollen, but current methodologies have given only partial insights into this important aspect of plant mating. We present a detailed analysis of the proportions and absolute amounts of stained pollen involved in six key fates for the hawkmoth-pollinated African orchid Disa cooperi . Despite being packaged into pollinaria, high proportions (> 0.95) of the pollen removed from anthers were lost during transport by hawkmoths in both years. The proportion of pollen lost correlated positively with the number of pollinaria removed from a plant, so that pollen export did not vary with pollen removal. Most pollen was dispersed to neighbouring plants, with rare long-distance dispersal up to 65 m. Of the pollen that reached stigmas during both years, roughly equal amounts were involved in facilitated self-pollination vs. cross-pollination, but the relative proportions of these fates differed between years. Contrary to expectation, we found that self-pollination between flowers did not increase with the number of open flowers, even though moths probed significantly more flowers on larger plants. However, during both years the fraction of removed pollen exported to other plants declined significantly with increasing self-pollination on the source plant, indicating that once self-pollination occurred it reduced (discounted) subsequent pollen export opportunities. The packaging of pollen into pollinaria in orchids appears to increase overall transfer efficiency by at least an order of magnitude relative to plants with granular pollen. Members of the Cryptotis goldmani group of small‐eared shrews (Mammalia, Soricomorpha, Soricidae) represent a clade within the genus that is characterized by modifications of the forelimb that include broadened forefeet, elongated and broadened foreclaws, and massive humeri with enlarged processes. These modifications are consistent with greater adaptation to their semifossorial habits than other members of the genus. The species in this group occur discontinuously in temperate highlands from southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, to Honduras. In Guatemala, there are three species: the relatively widespread Cryptotis goodwini and two species (Cryptotis lacertosus, Cryptotis mam) endemic to highland forests in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes of western Guatemala. Ongoing studies focusing on the relationships of variation in cranial and postcranial skeletal morphology have revealed a fourth species from remnant cloud forest in the Sierra de Yalijux, central Guatemala. In this paper, I describe this new species and characterize its morphology relative to other species in the C. goldmani group and to other species of Cryptotis in Guatemala. Spatial autocorrelation analysis tests whether the observed value of a variable at one locality is significantly dependent on values of the variable at neighbouring localities. The method was extended by us in an earlier paper to include the computation of correlograms for spatial autocorrelation. These show the autocorrelation coefficient as a function of distance between pairs of localities, and summarize the patterns of geographic variation exhibited by the response surface of any given variable. Identical variation patterns lead to identical correlograms, but different patterns may or may not yield different correlograms. Similarity in the correlograms of different variation patterns suggests similarity in the generating mechanism of the pattern.
The inferences that can be drawn from correlograms are discussed and illustrated. Examination and analysis of variation patterns of several characters or gene frequencies for one population, or of several populations in different places or at different times, permit some conclusions about the nature of the populational processes generating the observed patterns.
Autocorrelation analysis is applied to four biological situations differing in the nature of the data (interval or nominal), in the type of grid connecting the localities (regular or irregular), and the field of application (evolution or ecology). The examples comprise genotypes of individual mice, blood group frequencies in humans, gene frequency variation in a perennial herb, and the distribution of species of trees. Current fuel loads and distribution suggest that fire events are infrequent and of a low intensity in the regenerated dry sclerophyll forests of the Victorian box‐ironbark ecosystem. However, many box‐ironbark species possess traits consistent with fire‐cued regeneration. It is unclear the degree to which human disturbance may have altered fire regimes in these forests. The infrequent and low‐intensity fire regime suggested by current fuel dynamics may pose a threat to the persistence of fire‐cued species. Obligate seeders such as those of the Fabaceae and Mimosaceae, common in box‐ironbark understoreys, may be particularly vulnerable if inter‐fire intervals exceed seed longevity. This study used seed burial trials to examine seed dormancy and longevity in five legume species to explore their capacity to regenerate under an infrequent, low‐intensity fire regime. All species displayed dormancy and longevity patterns consistent with other south‐east Australian legumes. Before burial, dormancy levels were high for all species (98–100%). After 3 years, storage under in situ and ex situ conditions, dormancy in Pultenaea prostrata remained at pre‐burial levels with virtually no seed becoming non‐dormant. Over time, some Acacia seed became non‐dormant under both in situ and ex situ storage, with the pattern varying among species. Longevity also varied between species. Variation in the dormancy and longevity patterns observed in these obligate seeder legumes suggests two strategies: (i) releasing a portion of soil‐stored seed from dormancy during the inter‐fire period to permit inter‐fire recruitment; and (ii) retaining most soil‐stored seed as dormant during the inter‐fire interval. Both strategies represent potential weaknesses under a long fire interval regime. The first relies on dormancy release translating to successful recruitment and requires ongoing inter‐fire input into the soil seed bank. The second relies on seed longevity exceeding the inter‐fire interval. Whether either is more suitable to coping with long‐term infrequent fire requires long‐term monitoring.  相似文献

We analysed variation in microbial community richness and function in soils associated with a fire‐induced vegetation successional gradient from low maquis (shrubland) through tall maquis to rainforest on metal‐rich ultramafic soils at Mt Do, New Caledonia. Random amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting was used to determine the extent of genetic relatedness among the microbial communities and indicated that the open and tall maquis microbial communities were more similar to each other than they were to the rainforest community. Sole‐source carbon utilization indicated variation in the microbial communities, again with greater diversity in rainforest soils. Plate counts showed that both rainforest and maquis soils contained bacteria that can grow in the presence of up to 20 mmol L?1 nickel and 10 mmol L?1 chromium. Understanding microbial community composition and dynamics in these ultramafic soils may lead to a better understanding of the processes facilitating vegetation succession from shrubland to forest on these high‐metal substrates, and of approaches to successful revegetation following mining for metals including nickel, chromium and cobalt.  相似文献

Conventional pattern analysis and segregation analysis were used to investigate the hypothesis that young and mature individuals of Araucaria hunsteinii were not usually found growing in close association whilst the distribution of young and mature individuals of A. cunninghamii was essentially random. It was considered that this pattern reflected a difference in regeneration strategy between the two species, A. hunsteinii being a gap regenerator and A. cunninghamii a shade-tolerant species. A seedling growth-experiment using three different shade treatments and four temperature treatments tested this hypothesis further. Results show that A. hunsteinii is more dependent on high light intensity than A. cunninghamii for the production of biomass. A. cunninghamii produces more biomass than A. hunsteinii under all treatment conditions.  相似文献

The computation of autocorrelation coefficients for nominal, ordinal, and for interval data is illustrated, together with appropriate significance tests. The method is extended to include the computation of correlograms for spatial autocorrelation. These show the autocorrelation coefficient as a function of distance between pairs of localities being considered, and summarize the patterns of geographic variation exhibited by the response surface of any given variable.
Autocorrelation analysis is applied to microgeographic variation of allozyme frequencies in the snail Helix aspersa. Differences in variational patterns in two city blocks are interpreted.
The inferences that can be drawn from correlograms are discussed and illustrated with the aid of some artificially generated patterns. Computational formulae, expected values and standard errors are furnished in two appendices.  相似文献
