The Nutrition of Tetrahymena setifera HZ-1; Sterol and Alcohol Requirements   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
SYNOPSIS. In a chemically-defined medium Tetrahymena setifera HZ-1 required a sterol, an alcohol, eleven amino acids, a purine, a pyrimidine, and six B-complex vitamins. The sterol requirement was met by a variety of 3β-OH, C27-C29 sterols including cholesterol and stigmasterol, but not by precursors of cholesterol which precede desmosterol or Δ7-cholestenol. Some combinations of long-chain fatty acids with a synthetic dipalmitoyl phosphorylethanolamine partly substituted for sterol. Ethyl and methyl alcohols (but not a variety of other alcohols and organic acids) satisfied the alcohol requirement.  相似文献

Nematocyte differentiation from the interstitial stem cells in hydra occurs non-uniformly along the body column. The relative ratios of the 4 nematocyte types produced vary gradually from head to foot along the body axis (Bode and Smith, 1977). To find out whether this regional variation in nematocyte differentiation along the body column is related to the gradients of the head-activation and head-inhibition potentials, nematocyte differentiation patterns were examined in strains which have significantly different developmental gradients along their body columns. Five strains of hydra, including a wild-type, two mutant strains and two chimeric (mutnt/wild-type) strains, were investigated. It was found that the regional variations in the nematocyte differentiation were similar in all the strains examined, and that no significant differences of the variation existed that could be attributed to the differences of the developmental gradients in these strains. This suggests that nematocyte differentiation is strongly affected by the axial position along the body column, but that the gradients of the morphogenetic potentials involved in head formation are not involved in this effect. Instead, some other parameter(s) of axial position not directly associated with these gradients must be responsible for the positional effect on nematocyte differentiation.  相似文献

1. The effects of prey species and leaf age used by prey on performance of two generalist invertebrate predators were studied. The focal plant was Plantago lanceolata , which contains iridoid glycosides.
2. Diet of the herbivorous prey influenced their growth rate.
3. The generalist herbivore ( Vanessa cardui ) and the novel-plant feeder ( Manduca sexta ) contained very low levels of iridoid glycosides in their haemolymph, whereas the specialist ( Junonia coenia ) levels were 50–150-fold higher.
4. Predatory stinkbugs ( Podisus maculiventris ) fed either the novel-plant feeder or the specialist exhibited similar developmental rates. However, stinkbugs ate less of the generalist but grew faster. The growth rate of the stinkbugs was higher when the caterpillar species were raised on the new-leaf powder diet, which contained twice as much protein and iridoid glycosides as the mature-leaf powder diet.
5. Jumping spiders ( Phidippus audax ) ate more mealworms ( Tenebrio molitor ) than specialist J. coenia caterpillars, fed either new- or mature-leaf powder diets, and could not gain weight when fed J. coenia.
6. These results indicate that prey quality was not determined solely by the iridoid glycoside concentration in the diet.  相似文献

The neurosecretory cells in the cerebral ganglia of the snail,Planorbis trivolvis, have been examined for structural detailsand distribution of phosphatase activities. A more preliminarystudy on the localization of phosphatases in the neurosecretorycells of Helix aspersa has also been made. These neurons inboth species contain typical elementary neurosecretory granuleswhich appear to be elaborated or condensed in the Golgi saccules.Immature elementary granules are identifiable as "primary lysosomes"in that they contain acid phosphatase activity as well as nucleosidephosphatases. The mature elementary granules display no phosphataseactivity. Some saccules of the Golgi are also reactive for severalnucleoside phosphatases, including thiamine pyrophosphatase(TPPase). In Planorbis, TPPase is also present in the cisternaeof the endoplasmic reticulum. Larger, membrane bound, electron-densebodies (lipochondria) are found in close spatial associationwith the Golgi region. These also possess acid phosphatase;in addition, they contain nucleoside diphosphatases and (inPlanorbis) adenosine triphosphatase. Their content of acid phosphataseand the features of their fine structure indicate that theyare lysosomes akin to the dense bodies of vertebrate neurones. The significance and implications of these results are considered,as are other details of the neuronal and glial structure inPlanorbis.  相似文献

Endogenous calcium (Ca) accumulates along the lower side ofthe elongating zone of horizontally oriented roots of Zea mayscv. Yellow Dent. This accumulation of Ca correlates positivelywith the onset of gravicurvature, and occurs in the cytoplasm,cell walls and mucilage of epidermal cells. Corresponding changesin endogenous Ca do not occur in cortical cells of the elongatingzone of intact roots. The Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis is a sexually dichromatic species, in which males have blackish‐blue iridescence and females are dull brown. However, in some subtropical parts of its distribution, females show a plumage polymorphism that ranges from dull brown to dark brown and even black. Plumage melanization has been shown to protect feathers from bacterial degradation, decreasing the effects of harmful bacterial activity and thus plumage damage. In this study, we assessed whether bacterial feather‐degrading activity is acting as the selective force to increase darkness in the plumage of the female Shiny Cowbirds in Argentina. We compared the degradation of female Shiny Cowbird feathers belonging to different colour morphs when exposed to bacterial strains isolated from subtropical and temperate zones of its distribution, as well as to Bacillus licheniformis. We did not find differences in susceptibility to bacterial degradation between brown feathers and darker feathers. These results suggest that female plumage polymorphism in Shiny Cowbirds has not arisen as a defence against bacterial feather‐degrading activity.  相似文献

Studies relating age of independence training with achievement motivation and achievement have resulted in contradictory findings. The responses of fifty-two Chinese mothers in Hawaii to the independence training questionnaire were analyzed in conjunction with ethnographic data on child rearing practices. The lack of significant relationships between the index of independence training and measures of boys' achievement motivation and achievement behaviors was explained by the failure of the questionnaire to tap the mother's underlying motives for stating particular ages. The Chinese data revealed that cultural factors, such as values, strongly affect the mothers' responses.  相似文献

The Relation Between Ion Absorption and Protein Synthesis in Beet Disks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Disks of red beet storage tissue were incubated under asepticconditions permitting the development of various metabolic processescommonly associated with aged disks, and the effects of chloramphenicoland puromycin on protein synthesis, on the development of invertaseactivity and ion absorption capacity, and on ion absorptionper se were determined. Low concentrations of chloramphenicoland puromycin inhibit the development of ion absorption capacitybut stimulate invertase development and protein synthesis, whilehigher concentrations inhibit all three processes. In contrastion absorption itself is unaffected by puromycin, but is sensitiveto quite low concentrations of chloramphenicol The D-threo andL-threo isomers of chloramphenicol have sharply contrasted effectson the development, as distinct from the utilization, of ionabsorption capacity. The D isomer inhibits the development ofion absorption capacity more effectively than the L isomer whichin turn inhibits absorption more effectively than the D isomer. A reappraisal is made of the hypothesis that ion absorptionis directly linked with protein turnover and to account forthe results a model is proposed in which D-threo-chloramphenicolis active both as an uncoupler of oxidative phosphoryalationand as an inhibitor of protein synthesis, while L-threo-chloramphenicolacts only in the former capacity and puromycin only in the latter.It is concluded that the inhibition of ion uptake by chloramphenicolcannot be attributed to a contemporaneous effect on proteinsynthesis. However, the results are consistent with the involvementof ATPase proteins in ion uptake.  相似文献
