The 3 elements of the digestive tract of the pluteus larva (esophagus, stomach and intestine) acquire their characteristic shapes between 60 and 72 h after fertilization (15°C). The number of cells in the developing gut increases sigmoidally from about 100 at the completion of gastrulation to about 425 in the feeding pluteus. Embryos in which cytokinesis was inhibited with colchicine were able to form typically shaped guts comprising about 150 cells. Autoradiographs of embryos that had been cultured in sea water containing [3H]thymidine during shaping of the gut indicated no regions of enhanced thymidine incorporation. The hypothesis that shaping of the larval gut is due to regions of allometric cell proliferation was rejected. Measurements of the length of the developing gut indicate that the bending of the gut is facilitated by a doubling of the length of the digestive tract between two fixed points, the mouth and the anus. 相似文献

Bees are mobile organisms that seek food and nesting opportunities from a range of habitats. It is important to understand the way they move in agricultural landscapes if we are to conserve them and benefit from their activity as pollinators. We surveyed bees using directional flight interception (Malaise) traps over a 1‐year period in two agricultural landscapes in south‐east Queensland, Australia. We placed traps at the ecotone between crops and remnant vegetation to establish the pattern of movement between these habitats. Species richness in these landscapes (70) was high relative to that in comparable studies. Some bees were active year round, but most were caught in the period September to March. Across the whole assemblage there was a significant pattern where more species were detected leaving rather than entering remnant vegetation. The same bias was true for the number of individuals of the two most abundant species (Homalictus urbanus and Apis mellifera). Species exclusively found in crops were smaller on average (and therefore have smaller foraging range) than their non‐crop counterparts. Together, these patterns indicate that while bees are abundant in crop habitat, the remnant vegetation is important as the point of origin for bee movements, and the riparian remnant in particular is richer than the dry native remnant. Compositional similarity among samples was significantly explained by landscape but also movement direction (i.e. to or from the riparian remnant) because different species showed different patterns of response. We examined the pattern of territory settlement and its consequences for breeding success in the Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe on Bardsey Island, Wales, during the breeding seasons of 1991-93. Males returned earlier than females, and older males returned earlier than first-year breeders. Although their boundaries shifted between years, the general location of territories was consistent during the three-year study. There was a high degree of fidelity to area and territory between years for both sexes. The order of territory settlement, from which a territory rank was calculated, was highly consistent for males between years irrespective of individual settlement patterns and territory fidelity. Patterns of territory settlement were less predictable for females, although there was a significant correlation between the mean territory ranks of paired males and females. There was a male-biased sex ratio in each year, and between 5% and 26% of males remained unpaired throughout the breeding season. Male mating status and breeding success were dependent on arrival date, territory rank and breeding density. Early-arriving, usually older, males were able to settle on territories first and were more likely to pair, while later-arriving individuals were more likely to remain unmated. These effects were consistent between years, and consequently territories could be classified as either preferred (accounting for proportionately more breeding attempts) or non-preferred. Territory quality as opposed to individual quality appeared to explain much of the variation in breeding success, and both sexes benefited by breeding on preferred territories through enhanced breeding success and an increased probability that their offspring would be recruited to the population. 相似文献

Polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified in order to determine paternity in a captive population of the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata. Primer sets from 93 published passerine microsatellite sequences were tested for cross‐species amplification. Abstract: Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have experienced severe declines for several decades, and declines have been particularly precipitous in the southern United States. These declines are partially attributable to large-scale conversions of potential habitat to short-rotation pine (Pinus spp.) forests managed for wood fiber production and fire exclusion in pine-dominated landscapes. We used standard arthropod sampling techniques, human-imprinted bobwhite chicks, and vegetation response to evaluate effects of different understory vegetation management practices on brood habitat quality within a commercially managed pine forest in Louisiana, USA, during 2002–2005. Specifically, we evaluated effects of mowing, prescribed fire during the growing season, prescribed fire in combination with imazapyr application, and no vegetation management on arthropod abundance and diversity, vegetation response, and the probability of bobwhite chicks successfully capturing an arthropod. Bobwhite chicks were more successful at capturing arthropods, and arthropod abundance and diversity were greatest, in plant communities managed using prescribed fire and imazapyr. Forest stands managed using a combination of fire and imazapyr were managed primarily to benefit the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis; RCW). Our findings suggest that management directed toward improving forest condition for RCWs improves habitat quality for brooding bobwhites. However, bobwhite chicks in our study area were less successful at capturing arthropods than were chicks in other studies in the southeastern United States. Brood-rearing habitat in pine forests similar to those we studied may be of generally poor quality, and could be related to precipitous declines of bobwhites in the West Gulf Coastal Plain. Managers should recognize that creating high-quality brood habitat in forests similar to those we studied will require more intensive management of understory vegetation than we studied. 相似文献

As atmospheric CO2 increases, ecosystem carbon sequestration will largely depend on how global changes in climate will alter the balance between net primary production and decomposition. The response of primary production to climatic change has been examined using well‐validated mechanistic models, but the same is not true for decomposition, a primary source of atmospheric CO2. We used the Long‐term Intersite Decomposition Experiment Team (LIDET) dataset and model‐selection techniques to choose and parameterize a model that describes global patterns of litter decomposition. Mass loss was best represented by a three‐pool negative exponential model, with a rapidly decomposing labile pool, an intermediate pool representing cellulose, and a recalcitrant pool. The initial litter lignin/nitrogen ratio defined the size of labile and intermediate pools. Lignin content determined the size of the recalcitrant pool. The decomposition rate of all pools was modified by climate, but the intermediate pool's decomposition rate was also controlled by relative amounts of litter cellulose and lignin (indicative of lignin‐encrusted cellulose). The effect of climate on decomposition was best represented by a composite variable that multiplied a water‐stress function by the Lloyd and Taylor variable Q10 temperature function. Although our model explained nearly 70% of the variation in LIDET data, we observed systematic deviations from model predictions. Below‐ and aboveground material decomposed at notably different rates, depending on the decomposition stage. Decomposition in certain ecosystem‐specific environmental conditions was not well represented by our model; this included roots in very wet and cold soils, and aboveground litter in N‐rich and arid sites. Despite these limitations, our model may still be extremely useful for global modeling efforts, because it accurately (R2=0.6804) described general patterns of long‐term global decomposition for a wide array of litter types, using relatively minimal climatic and litter quality data. 相似文献

Carbohydrate oxidases in ericoid and ectomycorrhizal fungi: a possible source of Fenton radicals during the degradation of lignocellulose 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Isolates of the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Hymenoscyphus ericae (Read) Korf et Kernan, and the ectomycorrhizal fungi Suillus variegatus (Swartz ex Fr.) and Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch, along with a Cortinarius sp. and the white rot Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burdsall were examined for the ability to oxidize carbohydrates to their corresponding lactones and to excrete the H2 O2 produced thereby. All except Phanerochaete chrysosporium were found to express cellobiose oxidase (cellobiose dehydrogenase, EC 1.1.19.88) and glucose oxidase (β- d -glucose:oxygen 1-oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.3.4) when grown on cellobiose and glucose respectively. Production of extracellular H2 O2 was visualized during growth on both substrates using ABTS as the chromogen. According to the Fenton reaction, H2 O2 will react with hydrated or chelated Fe(II) in the environment to produce hydroxyl (Fenton) radicals, HO· . Mycelial extracts from each of the mycorrhizal fungi produced HO· in the presence of cellobiose and Fe(II), presumably mediated by H2 O2 produced by cellobiose oxidase activity in the extracts. Conditions favourable to HO· production were shown to exist in Modified Melin–Norkrans medium, and the data discussed in relation to previously observed lignin degradation by mycorrhizal fungi. 相似文献
