The natterjack toad Bufo calamita is rare in Britain, which is at the northwestern edge of its biogeographical range. We investigated the level of genetic differentiation amongst almost all (34 out of 38) of the surviving British populations of this species, and among six new populations established by translocations during the 1980s. For eight microsatellite loci, allele sizes and frequencies were analysed using samples from each of these populations. The populations clustered into three robustly differentiated groups, each of which corresponded with a geographical region (east/southeast England, Merseyside and Cumbria). The Cumbrian populations showed a further weak geographical substructuring into northern and southern clades. The populations in south Cumbria were genetically more diverse than those in any of the other regions, as judged by the mean numbers of alleles per locus and the mean heterozygosity estimates. The translocated populations clustered close to their founders and, with one exception, did not differ significantly with respect to mean allele numbers, heterozygosity or polymorphism level. However, significant genetic differentiation (as measured by unbiased R ST) was found between all but one of the founder-translocation pairs. The implications of this phylogeographic study for the future conservation of B. calamita in Britain are discussed.  相似文献

Crop‐wild hybridization has been documented in many cultivated species, but the ecological and genetic factors that influence the likelihood or rate that cultivar alleles will introgress into wild populations are poorly understood. Seed predation is one factor that could mitigate the spread of otherwise advantageous cultivar alleles into the wild by reducing seedling recruitment of crop‐like individuals in hybrid populations. Seed predation has previously been linked to several seed characters that differ between cultivated and wild sunflower, such as seed size and oil content. In this study, seed morphological and nutritional characters were measured in a segregating population of sunflower crop‐wild hybrids and wild and cultivated lines. Seed predation rates among lines were then assessed in the field. The relationship between seed predation and seed characters was investigated and quantitative trait loci (QTL) were mapped for all traits. There was no effect of seed type (hybrid vs. parents) on seed predation, although a trend toward more early predation of wild seeds was observed. Within the hybrids, seed predators preferred seeds that contained more oil and energy but were lower in fibre. The relationship between seed predation and oil content was supported by co‐localized QTL for these traits on one linkage group. These results suggest that oil content may be a more important determinant of seed predation than seed size and provide molecular genetic evidence for this relationship. The cultivar allele was also found to increase predation at all QTL, indicating that post‐dispersal seed predation may mitigate the spread of cultivar alleles into wild populations.  相似文献

Bees are mobile organisms that seek food and nesting opportunities from a range of habitats. It is important to understand the way they move in agricultural landscapes if we are to conserve them and benefit from their activity as pollinators. We surveyed bees using directional flight interception (Malaise) traps over a 1‐year period in two agricultural landscapes in south‐east Queensland, Australia. We placed traps at the ecotone between crops and remnant vegetation to establish the pattern of movement between these habitats. Species richness in these landscapes (70) was high relative to that in comparable studies. Some bees were active year round, but most were caught in the period September to March. Across the whole assemblage there was a significant pattern where more species were detected leaving rather than entering remnant vegetation. The same bias was true for the number of individuals of the two most abundant species (Homalictus urbanus and Apis mellifera). Species exclusively found in crops were smaller on average (and therefore have smaller foraging range) than their non‐crop counterparts. Together, these patterns indicate that while bees are abundant in crop habitat, the remnant vegetation is important as the point of origin for bee movements, and the riparian remnant in particular is richer than the dry native remnant. Compositional similarity among samples was significantly explained by landscape but also movement direction (i.e. to or from the riparian remnant) because different species showed different patterns of response. The landscape with greater native vegetation cover supported more species in and around crops than the landscape with less native vegetation.  相似文献

Temporal Hierarchies of Variation and the Maintenance of Diversity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract A general model shows how the long-term growth rate of a population can be partitioned into components representing various mechanisms of maintenance of species diversity. One component summarises the effects of fluctuation-independent mechanisms, which include classical resource partitioning and frequency-dependent herbivory. Two other components represent fluctuation-dependent mechanisms, the storage effect and relative nonlinearity of competition.
The general model shows how a community will track an equilibrium set by fluctuation-independent mechanisms and the environmental state when community dynamics are faster than the rate of environmental change. Fluctuation-dependent mechanisms can be important for diversity maintenance with or without such tracking, but on long timescales their effects are indistinguishable from those of fluctuation-independent mechanisms.
These considerations lead to a hierarchical view of mechanisms of diversity maintenance where the effects of different timescales are partitioned or merged depending on the timescale of observation. These issues are illustrated with model examples involving various combinations of resource partitioning, fluctuations in recruitment rates, variation in the timing of germination, and seasonality. The very long timescales associated with climate change contain many complexities but nevertheless many ideas applicable to shorter timescales may be useful in a modified form.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS Schizogony of Sarcocystis cruzi Hasselmann (syn. S. fusiformis Railliet) takes place in vascular endothelial cells 26 to 33 days after cattle ingest sporocysts from dogs. Kidney cortex from a heavily infected, dexamethasone-treated bovine was fixed for electron microscopy to determine the method of schizogonie development. Schizogony takes place by endopolygeny characterized by marked enlargement of the parasite nucleus, formation of nuclear lobes, presence of numerous spindles with adjacent pairs of centrioles along the nucleus, and simultaneous formation of daughter merozoites in the cytoplasm adjacent to the spindle poles. Endopolygeny in S. cruzi differs from that in other Sporozoa in that merozoite anlagen are seen in the cytoplasm before any nuclei divide. The resultant merozoites continue development and, when mature, resemble other sporozoan zoites. Upon release from the host cell into capillaries, they travel to muscle tissue to continue the life cycle by forming sarcocysts.  相似文献
