SUMMARY. The input of terrestrial invertebrates from different tree canopies to a trout stream was determined for a 28-week period from April to October, 1980. Sycamore produced the greatest number of animals, followed by oak and alder. Ash was not significantly different from the controls. Coleoptera, Diptera, Homoptera and Arachnida made up the greatest number of animals caught, with Lepidoptera larvae important beneath oak. The input of biomass (g m-2 dry wt) was also greatest beneath sycamore (35.80), followed by oak (27.76), alder (20.39), ash (11.15) and control (9.92). The input of biomass was bimodal. The significance of terrestrial invertebrates as food for salmonids is discussed.  相似文献

Metabolism of palmitate in cultured rat Sertoli cells   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Isolated rat Sertoli cells were incubated in the presence of [1-14C]palmitate at a cell concentration of 1.54 +/- 0.31 mg protein/flask (n = 7). The oxidation of palmitate was concentration dependent and maximal oxidation was obtained at 0.35 mM-palmitate. At a saturating concentration of palmitate the oxidation was linear for at least 6 h. About 65% of the total amount of palmitate oxidized during 5 h at 0.52 mM-palmitate (109 +/- 44 nmol/flask, n = 5) was recovered as CO2 and the rest as acid-soluble compounds. Almost all radioactive acid-soluble compounds which were secreted by the Sertoli cells were shown to be 3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate. The palmitate recovery in cellular lipids and triacylglycerols was 9.4 +/- 5.1 nmol/flask (n = 5) and 3.5 +/- 2.8 nmol/flask (n = 5) respectively. Addition of glucose had no significant effect on palmitate oxidation but caused a 9-fold increase in esterification of palmitate into triacylglycerols. We conclude that cultured rat Sertoli cells can oxidize palmitate to CO2 and ketone bodies and that fatty acids appear to be a major energy substrate for these cells.  相似文献

2-(2-Pyridyl)ethyl group is a new type P-O protecting group for the synthesis of oligodeoxyribonucleotides by the phosphite triester method. This group is stable to alkali and acid conditions, and to be removed from internucleotidic bonds under mild conditions via two step procedures without any side reactions. Further we have found that bis(diisopropylamino)chlorophosphine is much more effective for the preparation of bis(diisopropylamino)alkoxyphosphines than various dichlorophosphines.  相似文献

One hundred and forty five women who had undergone hemiarthroplasty for a subcapital fracture of the femoral neck but who were otherwise fit were studied to determine whether undue delay between injury and operation influenced their social circumstances three months after surgery. The median delay for those patients who showed good rehabilitation at three months was 29 hours, but for those who showed poor rehabilitation it was 57 hours. This difference was significant. It is suggested that a subcapital fracture in an otherwise fit elderly patient should therefore be regarded as a surgical emergency.  相似文献

Summary With an autoradiographic technique Cl and Na+ ions have been shown to be localized in the chloride cells of sea water eel gills. The significance of this accumulation, more marked towards the apical pole of these cells, is discussed with regard to branchial excretion of these ions in sea water.

Immunization of cancer patients with tumor-specific antigenic peptides is currently being tested in several clinical studies. We have examined the induction of CTL responses in mice after various modalities of peptide vaccination, to explore protocols that could be applied to humans. Our first model antigen was P198, which results from a point mutation in a normal gene. While two immunizations with peptide P198 in SBAS-1c adjuvant induced measurable CTL responses in less than 10% of DBA/2 mice, the addition of IL-12 to the peptide adjuvant mixture resulted in high CTL responses in nearly all mice. This strong enhancing effect of IL-12 was observed with 1,000 and 300 units and decreased gradually as the doses were reduced to 30 units. When IL-12 was replaced by other cytokines acting on T cells or antigen-presenting cells, such as IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, GM-CSF or MCP-3, no significant enhancing effect was observed. The same effect of IL-12 was obtained with peptide P1A, which is a major tumor-specific antigen of mastocytoma P815 and is encoded by a gene that is specifically activated in tumors.  相似文献

With the view of incorporating quaternary ammonium salts (QAs) in marine paints, nineteen of these were tested against a community of marine bacteria, at a temperature and salinity close to those of seawater. The concentration of QAs and the length of the main substituting chain are the main parameters affecting the growth and adhesion of bacteria, but the nature of (i) the other chains, (ii) the counter‐ion and (iii) the rings when inserted in the QA molecule also influenced the bacteria. Increasing the concentration of the QAs decreased the growth rate of the bacteria, the maximum cell density at the plateau and the rate of adhesion. The effect of increasing the length of the main chain depended on the range of carbon numbers. Below 7 carbon atoms, the growth rate was not significantly modified, but the numbers of cells at the plateau increased in contrast with the adhesion rate which decreased rapidly. Increasing the length of the chain to between 7 and 16 carbon atoms resulted in a decrease in the growth rate, a decrease and then a stabilisation in the numbers of cells at the plateau and no further change in the adhesion rate. Possibly an increase in growth rate, adhesion rate and in the numbers of cells at the plateau may occur above 16 carbon atoms. In contrast, the length of the other chains influenced positively the cell concentration at the plateau, and more generally the efficiency of QAs decreased substantially when these chains had the same numbers of carbon atoms. QAs with iodide as counter‐ion were more effective than those with chloride or bromide and phenyl was more effective than benzyl as rings inserted in QAs. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were often very high if compared to standard methods with laboratory strains, and this can be tentatively explained by the dominance of Gram— bacteria in the community assayed, the development of resistant strains in the cultures used with time and the presence of organic matter in the culture medium.  相似文献
