Habitat selection is complex due to density dependence and functional responses, defined as variation in relative habitat use depending on availability. In this study we unite these concepts by empirically testing for density‐dependent functional responses in habitat selection using a large herbivore, elk Cervus canadensis manitobensis, as a model species. Theory on density‐dependent habitat selection predicts specialised behaviour when densities are low with a gradual switch to generalist behaviour (more even selection of habitat) as competition intensifies. This suggests that functional responses in habitat selection should be positive when competition is low, but that density may have a negative effect on the functional response due to constraining effects of competition on habitat use and availability. We tested this prediction using data from Global Positioning System (GPS) collared elk (n = 33) and empirical data on spatiotemporal variation in local density during winter in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada (2002–2011). As local density increased, winter home range size decreased and the proportion of mixed forest (providing shelter and forage to elk) used and available within the home range also decreased. Our resource selection function (RSF) revealed clear density‐dependent effects in selection, being strongest (or weakest) for high quality (or low quality) habitat types at lowest observed density leading to more even selection as densities increased. The functional response in mixed forest selection was negatively affected by local density. Increasing availability of mixed forest in the home range was associated with higher selection at low density (positive functional response); no effect of availability on selection at moderate density (no functional response); and lower selection as availability increased at high density (negative functional response). Our study demonstrates that this process is largely driven by the negative effect of density on home range size as it constrains use and availability of habitat.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Van den Tillaar, R, and S?terbakken, A. The sticking region in three chest-press exercises with increasing degrees of freedom. J Strength Cond Res 26(11): 2962-2969, 2012-The purpose was to investigate the effect of 3 chest-press exercises with different degrees of freedom upon the sticking region and muscle activity in maximal attempts. It was hypothesized that, with increasing degrees of freedom, the sticking region (the weakest region during the lift) would be longer because the muscles need to use a part of their ability to control these increasing degrees of freedom during the exercise. Furthermore, the prime movers would have the same muscle activity, but the biceps muscle activity would increase when the degrees of freedom increases because of the enhanced control of the upward movement. Eleven male subjects (age 22.6 ± 1.7 years, body mass 78.6 ± 8.0 kg, stature 1.80 ± 0.07 m) with at least 1 year of bench press training experience participated in this study. Every subject was tested in 1 repetition maximum (1RM) in the 3 chest-press exercises. During the attempts, kinematics and muscle activity were recorded and analyzed in 4 different regions (downward, presticking, sticking, and poststicking). The participants achieved the highest 1RM strength using the free barbell (106.4 ± 15.5 kg), followed by the Smith machine (103.6 ± 14.8 kg) and dumbbells (89.5 ± 13.7 kg). Furthermore, muscle activity differences (electromyographic) between the 3 different exercises and the muscle activation between the 4 different regions were found. The length of the different lifting regions together with muscle activity was different between the exercises. However, the differences found did not follow the line of increasing degrees of freedom that would result in a longer sticking region. Therefore, it is possible to choose to train a particular chest press exercise with the purpose of training a particular muscle more than the others.  相似文献

Using long-term data on two forest rodent species [the bank voleClethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) and the yellow-necked mouseApodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834)] from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (E Poland), we decompose the annual density-dependent and density-independent structures into their seasonal components. For this purpose we adopt a state-space modelling approach explicitly incorporating sampling stochasticity. As density-independent factors we use the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) — a proxy variable for the overall climatic condition — and data on annual seed production. We find a weak effect of the NAO in the annual models for both species as well as during the winter in the seasonal model forC. glareolus. The effect of the NAO disappears, however, when seed-crops are incorporated into the models (for both the annual and the seasonal — suggesting that NAO primarily affects seed production). Seed production enters the models with a positive effect during the winter only, suggesting that the among-year variation in rodent density is primarily accounted for by differences in seed-production, particularly oak seeds. ForA. flavicollis, a slightly positive effect of hornbeam also appears in the summer dynamics. The obtained results are discussed on the basis of earlier studies on the same populations, on the same species studied elsewhere as well as on the basis of general ecological insight.

Seasonal variation in thermal preference of Arctic charr from a North Norwegian population (70°N) was studied in an electronic shuttlebox, which allowed the fish to control the water temperature by moving between two chambers. The fish were acclimated to 12 °C and a natural photoperiod before measurements. Fish were tested in autumn (September–October), winter (January–February), spring (April–May) and summer (June–August).  相似文献

The cabbage aphid: a walking mustard oil bomb   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, has developed a chemical defence system that exploits and mimics that of its host plants, involving sequestration of the major plant secondary metabolites (glucosinolates). Like its host plants, the aphid produces a myrosinase (beta-thioglucoside glucohydrolase) to catalyse the hydrolysis of glucosinolates, yielding biologically active products. Here, we demonstrate that aphid myrosinase expression in head/thoracic muscle starts during embryonic development and protein levels continue to accumulate after the nymphs are born. However, aphids are entirely dependent on the host plant for the glucosinolate substrate, which they store in the haemolymph. Uptake of a glucosinolate (sinigrin) was investigated when aphids fed on plants or an in vitro system and followed a different developmental pattern in winged and wingless aphid morphs. In nymphs of the wingless aphid morph, glucosinolate level continued to increase throughout the development to the adult stage, but the quantity in nymphs of the winged form peaked before eclosion (at day 7) and subsequently declined. Winged aphids excreted significantly higher amounts of glucosinolate in the honeydew when compared with wingless aphids, suggesting regulated transport across the gut. The higher level of sinigrin in wingless aphids had a significant negative impact on survival of a ladybird predator. Larvae of Adalia bipunctata were unable to survive when fed adult wingless aphids from a 1% sinigrin diet, but survived successfully when fed aphids from a glucosinolate-free diet (wingless or winged), or winged aphids from 1% sinigrin. The apparent lack of an effective chemical defence system in adult winged aphids possibly reflects their energetic investment in flight as an alternative predator avoidance mechanism.  相似文献

Evolutionary models of sex ratio adjustment applied to mammals have ignored that females may gain indirect genetic benefits from their mates. The differential allocation hypothesis (DAH) predicts that females bias the sex ratio of their offspring towards (more costly) males when breeding with an attractive male. We manipulated the number of available males during rut in a polygynous ungulate species, the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and found that a doubling of average male mass (and thus male attractiveness) in the breeding herd increased the proportion of male offspring from approximately 40 to 60%. Paternity analysis revealed indeed that males of high phenotypic quality sired more males, consistent with the DAH. This insight has consequences for proper management of large mammal populations. Our study suggests that harvesting, by generating a high proportion of young, small and unattractive mates, affects the secondary sex ratio due to differential allocation effects in females. Sustainable management needs to consider not only the direct demographic changes due to harvest mortality and selection, but also the components related to behavioural ecology and opportunities for female choice.  相似文献

A problem in climate studies has been on how to treat causal chains of explanations and both direct and indirect effects. Mammals in strongly seasonal environments of the boreal forest typically lose condition during winter and gain mass (and reproduce) during the summer season when biomass and plant quality peak. Mass decay of large herbivores during winter is due to direct effects of winter weather, such as increased costs of movement, thermoregulation and reduced access to food when snow is deep. Deer condition during summer is thought to be affected mainly indirectly by weather through plants. High spring temperature speeds up plant development, and deep snow can delay phenology in early summer. Current statistical modelling does not take into account these mechanistic pathways. We used hierarchical Bayes modelling to more mechanistically link global climate, local weather and plant phenology to autumn body mass of red deer in Norway. Red deer were much more affected indirectly through trophic interactions. No solid evidence of direct effects of snow depth was found on autumn body mass. We discuss the implications of our results relative to our ability to predict effects of global change on large mammalian herbivores in the boreal forest.  相似文献

The effects of photoperiod and feeding regimes on plasma IGF-I levels and their relationship with growth rate of juvenile halibut (initial mean weight 364 g) were investigated by rearing fish under five different photoperiod regimes and two feeding regimes for 14 months. The entire photoperiod experiment was divided into 3 phases where the fish in each phase were exposed to either natural photoperiod (N), stimulated photoperiod with long day and short night (S) or continuous light (L). Thus, the following five photoperiod combinations were tested: a) Control group (NNN) b) Group 2A (NLN) c) Group 2B (NNL) d) Long day-natural group (SNN) e) Production group (LNN). In addition, the Control group was split into two parts and fed according to two different feeding regimes: a) Continuous fed group: Fish fed every day. b) Starvation/re-fed group: Fish were starved for 5 weeks and then re-fed for 10 weeks, and the treatment repeated during the whole experimental period. The analyses of IGF-I were performed from individually tagged fish in all groups in September 2005 and March 2006. In order to test how rapidly starvation affects circulating IGF-I levels samples were taken from the Starvation/re-fed group after a 10 days starvation (September) and immediately after 10 weeks of feeding (March). A significant relationship between IGF-I levels and individual growth in the preceding period and photoperiod and starvation treatment was found on both occasions. In conclusion, the present study indicates that plasma IGF-I levels are correlated to growth in Atlantic halibut, and affected by photoperiod treatment or compensatory growth during re-feeding. Correlation between individual growth rate and IGF-I levels was low, but significant, highlighting the complexity of how environmental factors affect the endocrine and physiological regulation of growth in fish.  相似文献
