Terrestrial slugs of the Island of Cyprus were recently studied in the framework of a study of the whole terrestrial malacofauna of the island. The present work was carried out in the Natura 2000 conservation areas of the island in 155 sampling sites over three years (2004-2007). Museum collections as well as literature references were included. In total six species are present in the Natura 2000 areas of the island, belonging to three families: Limacidae, Agriolimacidae and Milacidae. One of the species, Milax riedeli, is a new record for the island. The distribution of the species across the island and in the surrounding areas is discussed.  相似文献

Glycodelin (Gd) is a major reproductive glycoprotein and a mediator for immunomodulatory effects directed to cellular, humoral, and innate immunity. Human pregnancy depends on a diversity of physiological processes including modulation of the maternal immunosystem. We evaluated the expression of Gd protein and mRNA in first trimester decidual tissue of normal pregnancies and spontaneous abortion and hydatidiform moles. Furthermore, in vitro experiments on endometrial cancer cells to analyze the effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on Gd regulation were performed. In decidual tissue of abortion patients, Gd expression was significantly decreased compared with normal gestation, which was confirmed by in situ hybridization. In mole pregnancy, an upregulation of Gd in the first 8 weeks of pregnancy was present. Gd is a main product of decidual tissue in the first trimester of human pregnancy. Reduced Gd expression in abortive pregnancy could lead to an increased activation of the maternal immunosystem, thus causing rejection of the developing fetus. Moreover, Gd expression in endometrial cancer cells in vitro could be stimulated by addition of hCG. Therefore, we speculate that hCG could be one of the factors regulating Gd expression because hCG is downregulated in women with abortion and upregulated in mole pregnancy. In addition, we found a positive feedback loop in Gd and hCG expression in human pregnancy.  相似文献

Spermiating male European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa), either a GnRHa injection (IN; 25 μg kg−1 body mass) or one of three types of controlled-release GnRHa-delivery systems: fast release implants (EVAc; 1OO μg kg−1), slow release implants (EVSL; lOO μg kg−1) and slow release microspheres (MC; 50 μg kg−1). Luteinizing hormone (LH) release was highly stimulated by all GnRHa treatments, with elevated plasma levels lasting for 2 days in injected fish (IN) and 2, 4 and 6 weeks in controlled-release-treated fish (EVAc, MC and EVSL, respectively), correlating with a 1, 3, 5 and 5 week period of stimulation of milt production, respectively. Plasma levels of the androgens testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), were not significantly affected by the GnRHa treatments. Plasma T was high at early spermiation and declined sharply near the end of this period. Plasma 11-KT levels declined continuously throughout the experiment. Levels of 17,20 β -dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20 β -P), a proposed maturation-inducing steroid (MIS) in European sea bass, fluctuated around 0.2–1 ng ml−1 and were not greatly affected by the treatments. These results indicated a close correlation between sustained stimulation of LH release, achieved by GnRHa-delivery systems, and long-term enhancement of milt production. They also show an absence of changes in the common sex steroids, associated with elevated LH and enhanced spermiation.  相似文献

The ovarian development of captive-reared, striped bass Morone saxatilis was examined during a 10-week period encompassing the spawning season. Vitellogenic oocytes in March had a mean diameter of 838 ± 18 μm and did not grow significantly thereafter. Except from one non-hormone-treated fish, all females failed to undergo final oocyte maturation (FOM) and their ovaries became atretic with the onset of high spring temperatures. A clearing fixative was found useful in identifying early stages of atresia, evident by the absence of the germinal vesicle (GV). Final oocyte maturation of fish treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) consisted of two phases. Early FOM lasted from 1 to 3 weeks, and was associated with lipid-droplet coalescence, and displacement of the GV and yolk globules to the peripheral cytoplasm. Late FOM lasted <24h, and consisted of yolk-globule coalescence and GV breakdown (GVBD). Ovulated eggs had completely coalesced lipid and yolk masses, with cortical alveoli lined against the cell wall. Both phases of FOM were associated with significant increases in oocyte diameter. Striped bass oocytes showed important morphological differences compared to oocytes of other members of the Moronidae family, in terms of percentage lipid content, chorion thickness and degree of hydration after ovulation.  相似文献

Glycodelins (Gds) are glycoproteins with a gender specific glycosylation. Glycodelin A (GdA) is primarily produced in endometrial and decidual tissue and secreted to amniotic fluid. Glycodelins were also identified in several cancer types, including serous ovarian cancer. Gds act as a T-cell inhibitor and are involved in inactivation of human monocytes. With a Gd peptide antibody, derived from a 15 amino acid sequence of human Gd and in situ hybridization experiments, the expression of Gd in serous, mucinous, endometrioid and clear cell ovarian tumors was identified. In contrast to former investigations with antibodies against GdA, a positive immunohistochemical reaction for Gd was observed in all forms of epithelium ovarian cancer. These results were confirmed with in situ hybridization. In addition, Gd is expressed in granulose cell tumors, a non-epithelial form of ovarian cancer. Furthermore, Gd was purified from ascites fluid of ovarian cancer patients. Ascites Gd showed significant differences in its structure of sialyl Lewis-type oligosaccharides compared to GdA. Additionally, ascites Gd inhibits IL-2 stimulated proliferation of peripheral blood leucocytes and inhibits adhesion of SLeX-positive cells to E-selectin. Sequence data derived from two mitochondrial markers, 16S rRNA and COI genes, were used to infer the evolutionary history of 47 insular and mainland populations covering most of the distributional range of the northeastern Mediterranean scorpion species Mesobuthus gibbosus. Based on the estimated divergence times of Mesobuthus lineages, the temporal frame of the genus differentiation in the northeastern Mediterranean region is placed in middle Miocene (15 million years ago). The biogeographic affinities of M. gibbosus populations point towards a mainly vicariant pattern of differentiation of the species which is consistent with the geological events that transformed the Aegean region during the period from 12 to 5 million years ago. M. gibbosus is an old northeastern Mediterranean species that has retained valuable bits of genetic information, reflecting some of the oldest vicariant events that have occurred in the area. Most importantly, the history witnessed by M. gibbosus has not been obscured by more recent palaeoevents of the region. Therefore, the case of M. gibbosus is in favour of a taxon-oriented 'perception' of the natural history of a given area.  相似文献

Objective

Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) have diffuse subtle gray matter (GM) atrophy detectable by MRI quantification analyses. However, it is not clear whether the etiology and seizure frequency are associated with this atrophy. We aimed to evaluate the occurrence of GM atrophy and the influence of seizure frequency in patients with TLE and either normal MRI (TLE-NL) or MRI signs of HS (TLE-HS).

Methods

We evaluated a group of 172 consecutive patients with unilateral TLE-HS or TLE-NL as defined by hippocampal volumetry and signal quantification (122 TLE-HS and 50 TLE-NL) plus a group of 82 healthy individuals. Voxel-based morphometry was performed with VBM8/SPM8 in 3T MRIs. Patients with up to three complex partial seizures and no generalized tonic-clonic seizures in the previous year were considered to have infrequent seizures. Those who did not fulfill these criteria were considered to have frequent seizures.

Results

Patients with TLE-HS had more pronounced GM atrophy, including the ipsilateral mesial temporal structures, temporal lobe, bilateral thalami and pre/post-central gyri. Patients with TLE-NL had more subtle GM atrophy, including the ipsilateral orbitofrontal cortex, bilateral thalami and pre/post-central gyri. Both TLE-HS and TLE-NL showed increased GM volume in the contralateral pons. TLE-HS patients with frequent seizures had more pronounced GM atrophy in extra-temporal regions than TLE-HS with infrequent seizures. Patients with TLE-NL and infrequent seizures had no detectable GM atrophy. In both TLE-HS and TLE-NL, the duration of epilepsy correlated with GM atrophy in extra-hippocampal regions.

Conclusion

Although a diffuse network GM atrophy occurs in both TLE-HS and TLE-NL, this is strikingly more evident in TLE-HS and in patients with frequent seizures. These findings suggest that neocortical atrophy in TLE is related to the ongoing seizures and epilepsy duration, while thalamic atrophy is more probably related to the original epileptogenic process.  相似文献

Lewis antigens belong to the blood group of antigens and mediate cellular adhesion through interaction with selectins. Invasive trophoblasts use an array of adhesion molecules to facilitate cell–cell and cell–extracellular matrix interactions. Here, we examined immunohistochemically the expression of Sialyl Lewis a (sLea), Sialyl Lewis x (sLex) and Lewis y (Ley) in term placentas obtained from cases of normal, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), preeclamptic (PE) and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets syndrome (HELLP) pregnancies. We report the expression of sLex in third trimester extravillous trophoblasts (EVT). sLex was significantly decreased in IUGR and moderately decreased in PE compared to normal placentas. sLex was additionally found in syncytiotrophoblast, without however any significant differences in staining intensity between normal and pathological cases. sLea was restricted to amnion epithelium. Finally, Ley was expressed in cytotrophoblasts and villous endothelial cells. Ley expression was significantly upregulated in IUGR and HELLP, whereas there was a trend toward increase in PE compared to normal placentas. The present study suggests that downregulation of sLex in EVT might be associated with IUGR and PE. Furthermore, Ley, which was recently described as a potent angiogenic factor, is upregulated in placental villi in conditions associated with placental malperfusion. U. Jeschke and A.
