Amazonian forests function as biomass and biodiversity reservoirs, contributing to climate change mitigation. While they continuously experience disturbance, the effect that disturbances have on biomass and biodiversity over time has not yet been assessed at a large scale. Here, we evaluate the degree of recent forest disturbance in Peruvian Amazonia and the effects that disturbance, environmental conditions and human use have on biomass and biodiversity in disturbed forests. We integrate tree-level data on aboveground biomass (AGB) and species richness from 1840 forest plots from Peru's National Forest Inventory with remotely sensed monitoring of forest change dynamics, based on disturbances detected from Landsat-derived Normalized Difference Moisture Index time series. Our results show a clear negative effect of disturbance intensity tree species richness. This effect was also observed on AGB and species richness recovery values towards undisturbed levels, as well as on the recovery of species composition towards undisturbed levels. Time since disturbance had a larger effect on AGB than on species richness. While time since disturbance has a positive effect on AGB, unexpectedly we found a small negative effect of time since disturbance on species richness. We estimate that roughly 15% of Peruvian Amazonian forests have experienced disturbance at least once since 1984, and that, following disturbance, have been increasing in AGB at a rate of 4.7 Mg ha−1 year−1 during the first 20 years. Furthermore, the positive effect of surrounding forest cover was evident for both AGB and its recovery towards undisturbed levels, as well as for species richness. There was a negative effect of forest accessibility on the recovery of species composition towards undisturbed levels. Moving forward, we recommend that forest-based climate change mitigation endeavours consider forest disturbance through the integration of forest inventory data with remote sensing methods.  相似文献

The modern cultivars of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) are highly polyploid and accumulate aneuploidies due to their history of domestication, genetic improvement and interspecific hybrid origin involving the domesticated sweet species Saccharum officinarum (‘noble cane’) and the wild Saccharum spontaneum, both with an evolutionary history of polyploidy. The first hybrids were backcrossed with S. officinarum, and selection from progenies in subsequent generations established the genetic basis of modern cultivars. Saccharum genome complexity has inspired several molecular studies that have elucidated aspects of sugarcane genome constitution, architecture and cytogenetics. Herein, we conducted a comparative analysis of the meiotic behaviour of representatives of the parentals S. officinarum and S. spontaneum, and the commercial variety, SP80-3280. S. officinarum, an octoploid species, exhibited regular meiotic behaviour. In contrast, S. spontaneum and SP80-3280 exhibited several abnormalities from metaphase I to the end of division. We reported and typified, for the first time, the occurrence of peri- and paracentric inversions. Using in-situ hybridisation techniques, we were able to determine how pairing association occurred at diakinesis, the origin of lagging chromosomes and, in particular, the mitotic chromosome composition of SP80-3280. Interestingly, S. spontaneum and recombinant chromosomes showed the most marked tendency to produce laggards in both divisions. Future attempts to advance knowledge on sugarcane genetics and genomics should take meiotic chromosome behaviour information into account.  相似文献

The introduction of exotic species into native ecosystems can be a cause for concern when those species are invasive. Invasive species cause ecological problems and have socio-cultural impacts on human health and the economy; for example, invasive bees may negatively impact their introduced ecosystem by spreading diseases or outcompeting native pollinators. Xylocopa spp. bees are diverse and distributed throughout the Neotropics. However, Xylocopa augusti (Lepeletier, 1841) and Xylocopa splendidula (Lepeletier, 1841) are not native to Mediterranean Chile. This study aimed to evaluate the invasive potential of these exotic species and predict the potential macroecological effects of their invasions. We also aimed to pinpoint possible distributions for these species throughout South America. We correlated biogeographic occurrence data with climatic variables for each species to model their potential distribution in both current and future scenarios. The models provide strong evidence that both species are changing their distributions: their ranges are expanding towards western South America, particularly Bolivia, Chile and Peru. We demonstrate an increase in niche overlap between these species and show there are new geographic areas vulnerable to the establishment of these invasive bees under current and future climate conditions. These data suggest that these bees may adapt their geographic distribution as the climate changes and pose a threat to native pollinators in new geographic areas.  相似文献

We have found that tryptose phosphate broth (TPB) prevents the inhibitory effect of chloramphenicol (CAM) on the cell proliferation of chick embryo fibroblasts. Study of growth parameters indicated that no lag or adaptation period appeared necessary for TPB-exposed chick cell populations to grow in the presence of CAM suggesting that a particular cell type was not selected. TPB did not prevent the inhibitory effect of CAM on the mitochondrial protein-synthesizing system. This was supported by cytochrome oxidase activity measurements, studies on the incorporation of 35S-metionine into mitochondrial proteins, electron microscopic observation of alterations in mitochondrial structure. Oxygen consumption was reduced by 95% and cyanide, 2-4-dinitrophenol, and salicylhydroxamic acid do not significantly affect the residual respiration. Analyses of reduced-minus-oxidized-cytochrome spectra of CAM-treated chick cells demonstrate the disappearance of the absorption bands of cytochromes aa3, b559, c1, and c. The presence of a type b cytochrome with maxima at 552 and 557 nm was observed. The results obtained indicate that long-term cultures of CAM-treated chick embryo cells cultivated in the presence of TPB grow with mitochondria devoid of a functional respiratory chain.  相似文献

The properties of aqueous solutions of synthetic renin substrate tetradecapeptide (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe-His-Leu-Leu-Val-Tyr-Ser) were examined through electrometric titrations, infrared and circular dichroism spectroscopy, and spectrofluorometry. Titration studies of angiotensin I (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe-His-Leu) were also made, whose results indicated a flexible folded conformation similar to that previously proposed for the octapeptide angiotensin II, with a possible additional beta turn at the C terminus. The experimental results of the tetradecapeptide study, associated with Chou and Fasman calculations and with an analysis of structure-activity relationships in renin substrates and competitive inhibitors, led to the proposal of a beta turn involving the His-Pro-Phe-His sequence of the tetradecapeptide. This beta turn would be stabilized by beta-antiparallel interaction between residues 3-4 and 10-12 and by electrostatic attraction between the N-terminal ammonium and C-terminal carboxylate groups and would be destabilized below pH 5 by electrostatic repulsion between His6 and His9. The capacity to assume this conformation is related to structural requirements for renin substrates and competitive inhibitors.  相似文献

Fifty-four species or isolates of insect trypanosomatids were examined for the presence of selected restriction enzyme sites in the small (SSU) and large (LSU) rRNA coding units of ribosomal genes. In the SSU, sites for Eco RI, Bgl II, Pst I, and Hind III were found to occur at the same location for all species examined, thus displaying a universal distribution among trypanosomatids. In the LSU, a site for Bgl II in the 24S-alpha sequence and sites for Hind III and Pst I in the 24S-beta sequence were found in all species examined. In contrast, a site for Pvu II in the SSU exhibited a genus-related distribution, being present in Crithidia and Herpetomonas but absent in Phytomonas. A site for Hind III in the 24S-alpha sequence of the LSU also exhibited genus-restricted distribution. The site was present in Crithidia but absent in Phytomonas and Herpetomonas. These findings were confirmed by dot hybridization with a synthetic oligonucleotide complementary to the 18S rRNA sequence containing the Pvu II site. Results point to the usefulness of restriction markers as diagnostic tools for distinguishing the lower trypanosomatid genera Crithidia, Herpetomonas, and Phytomonas at the same time revealing a marked complexity within the genus Leptomonas.  相似文献

The diffusion of electrically charged peptides (angiotensin II, bradykinin and [Suc1]angiotensin II) across tight cellophane membranes, obtained by different degrees of acetylation, shows a kinetic behaviour which was interpreted in the literature as indicative of the existence of different molecular conformations presenting slow interconversion velocities and different permeabilities across the membrane. A diffusion potential (Δψ) was found to be present across the membrane along diffusion experiments performed in low ionic strength. Upon annihilation of δψ by chemical voltage clamping (by equally increasing the ionic strength on both bathing solutions) the diffusion rate was decreased and the flow followed first order kinetics, indicating a major role of Δψ in the process. As the ionic strength increase could also affect molecular conformation, the role of Δψ on the diffusion of those molecules was tested by fitting flux and Δψ experimental results by an integrated form of Nernst-Planck flux equation. It is concluded that the deviation from first order diffusion kinetics, observed in low ionic strength, is solely due to the diffusion potential, and not to the existence of more than one molecular conformation in aqueous solution. This study was extended to amino acids and other related charged molecules.  相似文献
