HIV is still a major health problem in developing countries. Even though high HIV-risk-taking behaviors have been reported in African fishing villages, local distribution patterns of HIV infection in the communities surrounding these villages have not been thoroughly analyzed. The objective of this study was to investigate the geographical distribution patterns of HIV infection in communities surrounding African fishing villages. In 2011, we applied age- and sex-stratified random sampling to collect 1,957 blood samples from 42,617 individuals registered in the Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Mbita, which is located on the shore of Lake Victoria in western Kenya. We used these samples to evaluate existing antibody detection assays for several infectious diseases, including HIV antibody titers. Based on the results of the assays, we evaluated the prevalence of HIV infection according to sex, age, and altitude of participating households. We also used Kulldorff’s spatial scan statistic to test for HIV clustering in the study area. The prevalence of HIV at our study site was 25.3%. Compared with the younger age group (15–19 years), adults aged 30–34 years were 6.71 times more likely to be HIV-positive, and the estimated HIV-positive population among women was 1.43 times larger than among men. Kulldorff’s spatial scan statistic detected one marginally significant (P = 0.055) HIV-positive and one significant HIV-negative cluster (P = 0.047) in the study area. These results suggest a homogeneous HIV distribution in the communities surrounding fishing villages. In addition to individual behavior, more complex and diverse factors related to the social and cultural environment can contribute to a homogeneous distribution pattern of HIV infection outside of African fishing villages. To reduce rates of transmission in HIV-endemic areas, HIV prevention and control programs optimized for the local environment need to be developed.  相似文献

Measurements were carried out of the gas exchange properties (namely, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration rates), water use efficiency and water relations of two mangrove species, Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Rhizophora mucronata had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than C. tagal. Internal CO2 concentrations were higher during the wet season than the dry season in both species. Gas exchange properties were correlated positively with photon flux density in both species. Leaf water potentials were highest during the morning and lowest at midday and were also highest in the lower canopy leaves in both species. The two mangrove species had conservative water use. Management potential for the East African mangroves based on the results of this study is suggested.  相似文献

Kenya has a rich mammalian fauna. We reviewed recently published books and papers including the six volumes of Mammals of Africa to develop an up-to-date annotated checklist of all mammals recorded from Kenya. A total of 390 species have been identified in the country, including 106 species of rodents,104 species of bats, 63 species of even-toed ungulates(including whales and dolphins), 36 species of insectivores and carnivores, 19 species of primates, five species of elephant shrews, four species of hyraxes and odd-toed ungulates, three species of afrosoricids, pangolins, and hares, and one species of aardvark, elephant, sirenian and hedgehog. The number of species in this checklist is expected to increase with additional surveys and as the taxonomic status of small mammals(e.g., bats, shrews and rodents) becomes better understood.  相似文献

Since the 1970s, the globally endangered Grevy's zebra Equus grevyi has suffered a substantial reduction in range and population size. Grevy's zebra was introduced into the Tsavo ecosystem in two translocations: 22 individuals released in Tsavo East National Park in 1964 and 30 individuals released in Tsavo West National Park in 1977. This study focuses on the Tsavo East subpopulation within the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project Area. Data were collected from 2011 to 2014 using systematic and ad lib methods, while vegetation stratification was based on tonnes of CO2e per hectare. Cumulatively, 785 Grevy's zebra were seen in 210 encounters. The largest single group comprised of 24 individuals; mean group size was 4 ± 3. Foals comprised 10% of all individuals seen and were recorded across most months, suggesting year‐round breeding. The range core for the Grevy's zebra in this area was estimated to be 400 km2. Its density was estimated at 0.09 ± 0.038 individuals per km2, translating to a population of 36 ± 15 individuals (range: 6–67) based on the estimated core range. Grasslands and sparse AcaciaCommiphora vegetation strata were used significantly more than expected. Despite constituting only about 2–3% of the global Grevy's zebra population, this subpopulation could still play a role as a – disconnected – reserve population.  相似文献

An in vivo study was carried out to determine the effect of different types of Kenyan tea extracts on male Swiss albino mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei isolate KETRI 2710. The isolate produced a similar clinical picture after a pre-patent period of 5 days post-infection (DPI). Parasitemia levels in the untreated mice and those given different teas developed exponentially at similar rates reaching similar densities at the peak of parasitemia 8 DPI. Between 9 and 13 DPI parasitemia decreased more rapidly in tea treated compared to the untreated mice which indicated that tea lowered parasitemia level. Anaemia indicated by a fall in erythrocyte packed cell volume (PCV) occurred within 4 DPI and remained below the normal levels until the terminal stages of the disease. A significant difference (P<0.05) was observed 11 DPI between the tea treated and the untreated mice indicating that tea enhanced resistance to erythrocyte destruction. Mice treated with tea exhibited significantly (P<0.01) reduced parasite-induced hypoalbuminemia as compared to the untreated. Since albumin is a negative acute phase protein, it shows a decrease during inflammatory conditions and therefore its elevation in the mice given tea in this study clearly demonstrated that tea ameliorated inflammation induced by T. b. brucei. Although green and white teas were superior in most of these characteristics, black tea, which is the principle tea product from Kenya, displayed remarkable properties some even comparable to those of green tea. Interestingly, tea was more efficacious than dexamethasone an established anti-inflammatory drug, demonstrating its therapeutic potential.  相似文献

Background

Helminth infection is common in malaria endemic areas, and an interaction between the two would be of considerable public health importance. Animal models suggest that helminth infections may increase susceptibility to malaria, but epidemiological data has been limited and contradictory.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In a vaccine trial, we studied 387 one- to six-year-old children for the effect of helminth infections on febrile Plasmodium falciparum malaria episodes. Gastrointestinal helminth infection and eosinophilia were prevalent (25% and 50% respectively), but did not influence susceptibility to malaria. Hazard ratios were 1 for gastrointestinal helminth infection (95% CI 0.6–1.6) and 0.85 and 0.85 for mild and marked eosinophilia, respectively (95% CI 0.56–1.76 and 0.69–1.96). Incident rate ratios for multiple episodes were 0.83 for gastro-intestinal helminth infection (95% CI 0.5–1.33) and 0.86 and 0.98 for mild and marked eosinophilia (95% CI 0.5–1.4 and 0.6–1.5).

Conclusions/Significance

There was no evidence that infection with gastrointestinal helminths or urinary schistosomiasis increased susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum malaria in this study. Larger studies including populations with a greater prevalence of helminth infection should be undertaken.  相似文献

There is currently no licensed vaccine that protects foals against Rhodococcus equi–induced pneumonia. Oral administration of live, virulent R. equi to neonatal foals has been demonstrated to protect against subsequent intrabronchial challenge with virulent R. equi. Electron beam (eBeam)-inactivated R. equi are structurally intact and have been demonstrated to be immunogenic when administered orally to neonatal foals. Thus, we investigated whether eBeam inactivated R. equi could protect foals against developing pneumonia after experimental infection with live, virulent R. equi. Foals (n = 8) were vaccinated by gavaging with eBeam-inactivated R. equi at ages 2, 7, and 14 days, or gavaged with equal volume of saline solution (n = 4), and subsequently infected intrabronchially with live, virulent R. equi at age 21 days. The proportion of vaccinated foals that developed pneumonia following challenge was similar among the vaccinated (7/8; 88%) and unvaccinated foals (3/4; 75%). This vaccination regimen did not appear to be strongly immunogenic in foals. Alternative dosing regimens or routes of administration need further investigation and may prove to be immunogenic and protective.  相似文献

Simultaneous infestation with root-knot nematodes (RKN) and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) leads to formation of a disease complex that increases crop losses than effect of either RKN or FOL. In this study a management programme involving plant resistance, biological control agents, and neem was carried out to manage RKN and fusarium wilt disease complex. The biological control agents were Purpureocillium lilacinum (PL) and Trichoderma harzianum (TH) while the RKN was Meloidogyne javanica. In vitro dual culture plates were set up to test the interaction of biological control agents and FOL. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using two tomato cultivars Rambo F1 and Prostar F1. The treatments were; PL, TH, PL–TH, neem, PL neem, TH neem, and PL–TH neem. Each treatment was replicated four times and the treatments set up in a randomised complete block design in the greenhouse. Inhibition of FOL mycelial growth by TH and PL was 51.9%, and 44% respectively by the ninth day in vitro culture plates. In the cultivar, Prostar F1, the treatments PL–TH, PL, and TH in the presence or absence of neem had a FOL disease severity score significantly lower than the untreated control. Host resistance sufficed to prevent infection of Rambo F1 with FOL. The treatments PL–TH, PL and TH reduced FOL propagules and M. javanica juveniles in the roots and performed even better when combined with neem in both tomato cultivars. Therefore, a host that is resistant combined with biological control agents and organic amendments can be used in the management of RKN and FOL in tomato production.  相似文献

Tunga penetrans are fleas that cause tungiasis, a condition characterized by high transmission rate due to poor housing conditions, social neglect and inadequate health care in economically disadvantaged communities in developing countries. This study therefore aimed at characterizing jiggers antigens to identify immunodominant ones to help understand immunological behavior of the parasite that would otherwise be important in future control of the parasite. Samples were gravid fleas and blood samples from infested individuals in Kahuro and Murang’a East district in Murang’a County. Freeze and thaw was used to extract soluble proteins from the fleas. Ouchterlony Double immunodiffusion was used to assess antigen-antibody reactions between extracted soluble protein and the serum from immunized rats, Rattus norvegicus prior to analysis of human sera. These results were comparable to results of immunoelectrphoresis. Jigger protein isolates were analyzed in Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis technique (SDS—PAGE), against Pharmacia standard protein markers. Further analysis of jigger antigens against pooled human sera from infested victims in Western blot revealed three immunodominant antigens. Using simple regression analysis molecular weights of the three immunodominant antigens were estimated as 51.795, 23.395 and 15.38 kDa respectively. These results are important since they would help understand immunological behavior of the parasites. This would help to create basis for designing and improving approaches against jiggers such as development of immune prophylaxis to complement social science approaches that is mainly concerned with maintenance of high standards of hygiene.  相似文献
