Natural compounds such as resveratrol, tannic acid, and quercetin may help to treat cancer. Tamoxifen is a non-steroidal anti-estrogen
drug widely used in the treatment of patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. The aim of the study was to compare
the effects of these natural compounds and tamoxifen in colon adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell
lines, on telomerase enzyme activity, cell viability, number of cells and DNA fragmentation. In this study to determine telomerase
enzyme activity was used PCR–ELISA kit. To determine cell viability and number of cells were used tripan blue stain. DNA fragmentation
was determined by DNA ladder isolation kit. Tannic acid was more effective than resveratrol, with respect to reduction in
telomerase activity, cell viability and cell count in breast adenocarcinoma. Tannic acid and tamoxifen was more effective
than resveratrol and quercetin telomerase activity, cell viability and cell count in colon adenocarcinoma. Flavonoids such
as resveratrol, tannic acid and quercetin which was studied on, has benefical effects on cancer therapy. These effects such
as decreasing telomerase enzyme activity, cell viability and number of cells and inducing DNA fragmentation (apoptosis) must
be studied for assist to develop new therapeutic pathways. There should be much more sudies in order to discover resveratrol,
tannic acid and quercetin and other potential medicines. 相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2010.00363.x General health, dental status and perceived dental treatment needs of an elderly population in Istanbul Background: Comprehensive data on the oral health status and dental treatment needs of the elderly population in Turkey are deficient. Objectives: This pilot study determined the general and dental health status, perceived medical and dental treatment needs of an elderly population dwelling in residential homes in Istanbul. Method: Subjects at three different residential homes, namely one belonging to the state and two supported by foundations in Istanbul (N=121, female: 63 and male: 58) were involved in this study. A detailed questionnaire was prepared and dental examinations were conducted. Information was collected related to age, education levels, financial status, current physical functional status, general health, mental health, previous dental history, current dental status, oral hygiene practices and denture hygiene of these elderly people. The prevalence of edentulism, the presence and type of dental prostheses, dental and denture status and denture cleanliness were further evaluated. Results: The three most prevalent reported general health problems were associated with genito‐urinary problems (24%) followed by cardiovascular (18%) and respiratory problems (14%) varying significantly between genders, with males suffering more from cardiovascular problems than females (p < 0.05). Females showed significantly higher gastrointestinal and orthopaedic problems than males (p < 0.05). Females were more frequently edentulous than males but denture hygiene was significantly better in females than in males (p < 0.05). Brushing frequency did not significantly increase denture hygiene (p = 0.6). More than one‐third of the subjects had not been to the dentist within the previous 5–10 years, mainly due to lack of demand, followed by the cost of the dental care and fear. More than two‐thirds of denture‐wearing subjects wore their dentures only during eating. Conclusions: There was significant perceived dental treatment and care need for the sample population of elderly studied. 相似文献

Background
Exposure of human populations to ambient particulate matter (PM) air pollution significantly contributes to the mortality attributable to ischemic cardiovascular events. We reported that mice treated with intratracheally instilled PM develop a prothrombotic state that requires the release of IL-6 by alveolar macrophages. We sought to determine whether exposure of mice to PM increases the levels of PAI-1, a major regulator of thrombolysis, via a similar or distinct mechanism. Methods and Principal Findings
Adult, male C57BL/6 and IL-6 knock out (IL-6−/−) mice were exposed to either concentrated ambient PM less than 2.5 µm (CAPs) or filtered air 8 hours daily for 3 days or were exposed to either urban particulate matter or PBS via intratracheal instillation and examined 24 hours later. Exposure to CAPs or urban PM resulted in the IL-6 dependent activation of coagulation in the lung and systemically. PAI-1 mRNA and protein levels were higher in the lung and adipose tissue of mice treated with CAPs or PM compared with filtered air or PBS controls. The increase in PAI-1 was similar in wild-type and IL-6−/− mice but was absent in mice treated with etanercept, a TNF-α inhibitor. Treatment with etanercept did not prevent the PM-induced tendency toward thrombus formation. Conclusions
Mice exposed to inhaled PM exhibited a TNF-α-dependent increase in PAI-1 and an IL-6-dependent activation of coagulation. These results suggest that multiple mechanisms link PM-induced lung inflammation with the development of a prothrombotic state. 相似文献75.

HIV progression is characterized by immune activation and microbial translocation. One factor that may be contributing to HIV progression could be a dysbiotic microbiome. We therefore hypothesized that the GI mucosal microbiome is altered in HIV patients and this alteration correlates with immune activation in HIV. 121 specimens were collected from 21 HIV positive and 22 control human subjects during colonoscopy. The composition of the lower gastrointestinal tract mucosal and luminal bacterial microbiome was characterized using 16S rDNA pyrosequencing and was correlated to clinical parameters as well as immune activation and circulating bacterial products in HIV patients on ART. The composition of the HIV microbiome was significantly different than that of controls; it was less diverse in the right colon and terminal ileum, and was characterized by loss of bacterial taxa that are typically considered commensals. In HIV samples, there was a gain of some pathogenic bacterial taxa. This is the first report characterizing the terminal ileal and colonic mucosal microbiome in HIV patients with next generation sequencing. Limitations include use of HIV-infected subjects on HAART therapy. 相似文献

Kluyveromyces marxianus Y-8281 yeast culture was utilized for the biological treatment of deproteinated whey wastewater in a batch system. Removal of lactose was optimized by the utilization of response surface methodology, RSM. The empirical model developed through RSM in terms of effective operational factors of medium pH, temperature, lactose and ammonia concentrations was found adequate to describe the treatment of deproteinated whey. Through the analysis, medium pH and temperature were found to be the most significant factors and an increment in both had a positive effect on lactose utilization, while lactose and ammonia concentrations had the least weight within the ranges investigated. Based on contour plots and variance analysis, optimum operational conditions for maximizing lactose removal were found to be 31 degrees C, 45 g/L whey powder concentration, 4 g/L total ammonium salt concentration and medium pH 6. Under the optimum operating conditions determined, 95% lactose removal was achieved after an 18-h fermentation. 相似文献

Developing a better understanding of associations among ploidy level, geographic distribution, and genetic diversity of Cynodon accessions could be beneficial to bermudagrass breeding programs, and would enhance our understanding of the evolutionary
biology of this warm season grass species. This study was initiated to: (1) determine ploidy analysis of Cynodon accessions collected from Turkey, (2) investigate associations between ploidy level and diversity, (3) determine whether
geographic and ploidy distribution are related to nuclear genome variation, and (4) correlate among four nuclear molecular
marker systems for Cynodon accessions’ genetic analyses. One hundred and eighty-two Cynodon accessions collected in Turkey from an area south of the Taurus Mountains along the Mediterranean cost and ten known genotypes
were genotyped using sequence related amplified polymorphism (SRAP), peroxidase gene polymorphism (POGP), inter-simple sequence
repeat (ISSR), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The diploids, triploids, tetraploids, pentaploids, and hexaploids
revealed by flow cytometry had a linear present band frequency of 0.36, 0.47, 0.49, 0.52, and 0.54, respectively. Regression
analysis explained that quadratic relationship between ploidy level and band frequency was the most explanatory (r = 0.62, P < 0.001). The AMOVA results indicated that 91 and 94% of the total variation resided within ploidy level and provinces, respectively.
The UPGMA analysis suggested that commercial bermudagrass cultivars only one-third of the available genetic variation. SRAP,
POGP, ISSR, and RAPD markers differed in detecting relationships among the bermudagrass genotypes and rare alleles, suggesting
more efficiency of combinatory analysis of molecular marker systems. Elucidating Cynodon accessions’ genetic structure can aid to enhance breeding programs and broaden genetic base of commercial cultivars.

Effects of salicylic acid and salinity on apoplastic antioxidant enzymes in two wheat cultivars differing in salt tolerance 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of salicylic acid (SA) and salinity on the activity of apoplastic antioxidant enzymes were studied in the leaves
of two wheat (Triticum aestivam L.) cultivars: salt-tolerant (Gerek-79) and salt-sensitive (Bezostaya). The leaves of 10-d-old seedlings grown at nutrient
solution with 0 (control), 250 or 500 mM NaCl were sprayed with 0.01 or 0.1 mM SA. Then, the activities of catalase (CAT),
peroxidase (POX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in the fresh leaves obtained from 15-d-old seedlings. The
NaCl applications increased CAT and SOD activities in both cultivars, compared to those of untreated control plants. In addition,
the NaCl increased POX activity in the salt-tolerant while decreased in the salt-sensitive cultivar. In control plants of
the both cultivars, 0.1 mM SA increased CAT activity, while 0.01 mM SA slightly decreased it. SA treatments also stimulated
SOD and POX activity in the salt-tolerant cultivar but significantly decreased POX activity and had no effect on SOD activity
in the saltsensitive cultivar. Under salinity, the SA treatments significantly inhibited CAT activity, whereas increased POX
activity. The increases in POX activity caused by SA were more pronounced in the salt-tolerant than in the salt-sensitive
cultivar. SOD activity was increased by 0.01 mM SA in the salt-tolerant while increased by 0.1 mM SA treatment in the salt-sensitive
cultivar. 相似文献
