The gold standard for restoring Endodontically Treated Teeth (ETT) with successful clinical longevity requires having minimal invasive preparations and maximal tissue conservation. Many dentists still consider hybrid post/core/crown to be the first choice for restoring ETT. Endocrown is a viable alternative treatment modality to hybrid post/core/crown. This study aims to assess the proper judgment of dentists working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the use of monolithic endocrown versus hybrid post/core/crown for restoring ETT. The IRB of Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) Institutional Review Board reviewed this study. The questionnaire was validated and electronically distributed. The participants were pre-informed that their responses are completely anonymous and used for professional purposes only. The questionnaire surveyed dentists working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, about their preference for different ETT restorative modalities at various clinical scenarios. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and t-test. All P-values of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. A total of 275 responses were collected; 61.45% were females and 38.55% males. 56% of them were general practitioners, while 16% were consultants. Prefabricated post/core was the most preferred technique among the participants (18.55%), followed by endocrown (12.36%), and lastly, cast post/core (8.73%). The amount of remaining tooth structure was the most influential in the treatment selection (30.18%), followed by the presence or absence of 1–2 mm ferrule (17.82%). Interocclusal space (12.36%) was the least influential factor. Endocrown recorded 63.27% as the most preferred line of treatment in case of insufficient inter-occlusal space. 40.36% preferred endocrown for patients with occlusal risk factors. The amount of the remaining tooth structure and the tooth position significantly affect the treatment options of the participants. Endocrown was the most preferred treatment modality for restoring ETT for patients with occlusal consideration. 相似文献
The present study focused on developing a wild-type actinomycete isolate as a model for a non-pathogenic filamentous producer of biosurfactants. A total of 33 actinomycetes isolates were screened and their extracellular biosurfactants production was evaluated using olive oil as the main substrate. Out of 33 isolates, 32 showed positive results in the oil spreading technique (OST). All isolates showed good emulsification activity (E24) ranging from 84.1 to 95.8%. Based on OST and E24 values, isolate R1 was selected for further investigation in biosurfactant production in an agitated submerged fermentation. Phenotypic and genotypic analyses tentatively identified isolate R1 as a member of the Streptomyces genus. A submerged cultivation of Streptomyces sp. R1 was carried out in a 3-L stirred-tank bioreactor. The influence of impeller tip speed on volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa), growth, cell morphology and biosurfactant production was observed. It was found that the maximum biosurfactant production, indicated by the lowest surface tension measurement (40.5 ± 0.05 dynes/cm) was obtained at highest kLa value (50.94 h−1) regardless of agitation speed. The partially purified biosurfactant was obtained at a concentration of 7.19 g L−1, characterized as a lipopeptide biosurfactant and was found to be stable over a wide range of temperature (20–121 °C), pH (2–12) and salinity [5–20% (w/v) of NaCl].
Hurthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid is a rare form of thyroid cancer. It may present as a low grade tumour or can present as a more aggressive metastatic carcinoma. Hurthle cell carcinoma has the highest incidence of metastasis among all differentiated thyroid cancers. Most commonly haematogenous spread to lungs, bones and brain, however spread to regional lymph nodes is not uncommon. The breast is a rare site for metastasis from extramammary sources. We present the first case of breast metastasis from Hurthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid.
Case presentation
We report a 77 year old lady who had total thyroidectomy and bilateral neck dissection followed by radiotherapy for a high grade metastatic Hurthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid. Ten months later she presented to the breast clinic with left breast lump and a lump at the left axilla. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the lumps and histology after wide local excision of the breast lump confirmed metastatic Hurthle cell carcinoma.
Conclusion
The presence of breast lumps in patients with history of extramammary cancer should raise the possibility of metastasis.
The purpose of this study was to develop a drug-loaded nanosystem that has the ability to achieve flexible yet rate-controlled
release of model drug isoniazid (INH) employing either an aqueous or emulsion-based salting-out approach. Formulation conditions
were aimed at reducing the polymeric size with subsequent rate-modulated INH release patterns from the polymeric nanosystem.
The emulsion-based salted-out nanosystems had particle sizes ranging from 77–414 nm and a zeta potential of −24 mV. The dispersant
dielectric constant was set at 78.5 and a conductivity of 3.99 mS/cm achieved. The reduced nanosystem size of the aqueous-based
approach has demonstrated an intrinsically enhanced exposure of methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate to zinc sulphate which was
employed as a crosslinking reagent. This resulted in robustly interconnected polymeric supports in which INH was efficiently
embedded and subsequently released. The multi-layer perceptron data obtained showed that the aqueous and emulsion-based salting
out approaches had Power (law) (MSE = 0.020) and Linear (MSE = 0.038) relationships, respectively. Drug release from the nanosystems
occurred in two phases with an initial burst-release in aqueous-based nanosystems (30–100%) and significantly lower bursts
observed in emulsion-based nanosystems (20–65%) within the first 2 h. This was followed by a gradual exponential release phase
over the remaining 12 h. The nanosystems developed demonstrated the ability to control the release of INH depending on the
formulation approach adopted. 相似文献
This work investigates if human mitochondrial variants influence on maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2max)). With this purpose we recruited, as a uniform population in term of nutritional habits and life style, 114 healthy male Spanish subjects that practiced fitness exercises 3-4 times a week. Once mtDNA haplogroups were determined, we found that J presents with lower VO(2max) (P=0.02) than nonJ variants. J has been related with a lower efficiency of electron transport chain (ETC), diminished ATP and ROS production. Thus, the difficult to compensate the mitochondrial energetic deficiency could explain the accumulation of J haplogroup in LHON and multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, the lower ROS production associated to J could also account for the accrual of this variant in elderly people consequent to a decreased oxidative damage. 相似文献
The effects of yeheb (Cordeauxiaedulis Hemsl.) leaf extract on feeding and oviposition by diamondback moth (DBM) (Plutella xylostella L.) and the behavior of DBM parasitoid, Cotesia vestalis (Haliday), were studied. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the headspace of intact and DBM-damaged broccoli plants sprayed
with yeheb extracts (YE) were also analyzed. Larval feeding and growth, and oviposition by adult DBM were strongly inhibited
by the extract. Cotesia vestalis were attracted to volatile blends from intact or DBM-damaged broccoli plants sprayed with YE over intact plants sprayed with
water or methanol. Analyses of VOCs in the headspace of broccoli plants revealed that both intact and DBM-damaged plants sprayed
with YE showed remarkable differences in sesquiterpene compounds compared to intact control treatments. These combined negative
effects of YE on DBM fitness together with positive effects on the parasitoid show that yeheb is a potential source of compounds
for use in integrated pest management to control damage caused by DBM. 相似文献
In this study, an optimized epichlorohydrin-crosslinked semi-interpenetrating polymer network xerogel matrix system (XePoMas) for the controlled delivery of sulpiride was prepared. The ability of XePoMas to sustain drug release was determined by in vitro and in vivo drug release experiments. Swelling of the xerogel over the 24-h experimental period ranged from 346 to 648%; swelling was observed to increase exponentially over the initial 8 h. In vitro drug release depicted a linear zero order drug release profile with an R2 value of 0.9956. The ability of the fabricated XePoMas to sustain drug release and enhance bioavailability of sulpiride in vivo was investigated by evaluating the plasma drug concentration over 24 h in the large pig model. The optimized XePoMas formulation was shown to increase intestinal absorption of sulpiride to a greater extent than the marketed product in vivo, with a Cmax of 830.58 ng/mL after 15 h. 相似文献
Diabetes mellitus induces testicular damage, increases sperm abnormalities, and impairs reproductive dysfunction due to induction of endocrine disturbance and testicular oxidative stress. This study evaluated the reproductive protective effect of ellagic acid (EA) against testicular damage and abnormalities in sperm parameters in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (T1DM) and examined some possible mechanisms of protection. Adult male rats were segregated into 5 groups (n = 12 rat/each) as control, control + EA (50 mg/kg/day), T1DM, T1DM + EA, and T1DM + EA + brusatol (an Nrf-2 inhibitor) (2 mg/twice/week). All treatments were conducted for 12 weeks, daily. EA preserved the structure of the seminiferous tubules, prevented the reduction in sperm count, motility, and viability, reduced sperm abnormalities, and downregulated testicular levels of cleaved caspase-3 and Bax in diabetic rats. In the control and diabetic rats, EA significantly increased the circulatory levels of testosterone, reduced serum levels of FSH and LH, and upregulated Bcl-2 and all steroidogenic genes (StAr, 3β-HSD1, and 11β-HSD1). Besides, it reduced levels of ROS and MDA but increased levels of GSH and MnSOD and the transactivation of Nrf2. All these biochemical alterations induced by EA were associated with increased activity and nuclear accumulation of Nrf2. However, all these effects afforded by EA were weakened in the presence of brusatol. In conclusion, EA could be an effective therapy to alleviated DM-induced reproductive toxicity and dysfunction in rats by a potent antioxidant potential mediated by the upregulation of Nrf2. 相似文献
This study was performed to assess how 4 weeks of magnesium supplementation and exercise affect the free and total plasma
testosterone levels of sportsmen practicing tae kwon do and sedentary controls at rest and after exhaustion. The testosterone
levels were determined at four different periods: resting before supplementation, exhaustion before supplementation, resting
after supplementation, and exhaustion after supplementation in three study groups, which are as follows: Group 1—sedentary
controls supplemented with 10 mg magnesium per kilogram body weight. Group 2—tae kwon do athletes practicing 90–120 min/day
supplemented with 10 mg magnesium per kilogram body weight. Group 3—tae kwon do athletes practicing 90–120 min/day receiving
no magnesium supplements. The free plasma testosterone levels increased at exhaustion before and after supplementation compared
to resting levels. Exercise also increased testosterone levels relative to sedentary subjects. Similar increases were observed
for total testosterone. Our results show that supplementation with magnesium increases free and total testosterone values
in sedentary and in athletes. The increases are higher in those who exercise than in sedentary individuals. 相似文献
α-Lactalbumin α-La), together with oleic acid can be converted to a complex, which kills tumor cells selectively. Cytotoxic α-La -oleic acid and α-La -linoleic acid complexes were generated by adding fatty acid to camel holo α-La at 60 ° C (referred to as La-OA-60 and La-LA-60 state, respectively). Structural properties of these complexes were studied and compared to the camel α-La. The experimental results show that linoleic acid induces α-La partial unfolding but oleic acid does not change the protein structure significantly. Also the stability of La-OA-60 and La-LA-60 toward thermal denaturation was measured. The order of temperature at the transition midpoint is as follows: La-LA-60 < La-OA-60 < α-La. La-OA-60 complex inhibited tubulin polymerization in vitro. Although the structures of La-OA-60 and La-LA-60 were different, these two complexes had similar cytotoxic effect to DU145 human prostate cancer cells. Samples of La-OA-60 that have been renatured after denaturation lost the specific biological activity toward tumor cells. 相似文献
