1. Enzymes pertinent to bactericidal activities of leucocytes were assayed in children suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition. 2. Leucocytes obtained from malnourished and control children contained similar activities for glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. Granule-bound NADPH oxidase activity was low in leucocytes isolated from malnourished patients and failed to show the phagocytic stimulation which is normally seen in control leucocytes. Further, leucocytes obtained from malnourished patients did not release the acid phosphatase from lysosomes during phagocytosis, unlike those from controls. 3. Treatment of the malnourishment with a diet high in calories and protein resulted in significant increase in the activities of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and NADPH oxidase and in releasing the acid phosphatase from the lysosomes into the supernatant fraction during phagocytosis. 4. The significance of these enzyme changes are discussed in relation to the increased susceptibility of these patients to infection. 相似文献

Summary The effects of root exudates and extracts of Cassia tora L. and Crotalaria medicaginea Lamk., on some dominant rhizosphere fungi isolated from the plants were studied. Root extracts induced a high degree of stimulation in rate of growth of a majority of the fungi tested. Summary Histochemical techniques for acetylcholinesterase and catecholamine show that ureterovesical ganglia of both cat and dog contain dense intraganglionic cholinergic and adrenergic plexuses. Ramifications of both plexuses surround most cholinergic and adrenergic ganglion cell bodies as pericellular synaptic plexuses. Similar pericellular plexuses exist around extraganglionic cholinergic and adrenergic ganglion cells. Both adrenergic and cholinergic synaptic fibers persist in denervated pregnaglionic nerve-free specimens, indicating that cholinergic synaptic fibers are postganglionic parasympathetic in nature. The presence of adrenergic (postganglionic sympathetic) and postganglionic parasympathetic synapses around cell bodies in ureterovesical ganglia provides a morphologic basis for the sympathoinhibitory and muscarinic parasympatho-excitatory phenomena described in these ganglia. 相似文献

Summary Total K, exchangeable K (NH4OAc method), CH3COOH, cold H2SO4 and boiling HNO3 extractable K were compared with dry matter yield response and K uptake from maize grown on 155 Commonwealth Caribbean soils in greenhouse experiments.Correlation coefficients for soil test values with percentage yield and K uptake were calculated using data from all the soils together and also when the soils were grouped according to pH (< 5.5, 5.5–7.0 and > 7.0), per cent base saturation (< 60, 60–79, 80–99 and 100 per cent), cation exchange capacity (< 10, 10–30 and > 30 me per 100 g) and texture (clays, clay loams and loams and sands). In general, correlations of soil test value with K uptake were superior to those with percentage yield. Total K gave no significant correlations in any of the comparisons. The NH4OAc (exchangeable K) and cold H2SO4 were the most successful methods overall and the least sensitive to changes in soil properties. The CH3COOH extract in general was the least effective. The differing behaviour and the ability of the methods to extract K is discussed in relation to the mineralogy and genesis of the soils which make up the various groups when divided according to the soil properties listed above. 相似文献

Bacillus strains have been widely used for the production of fibrinolytic enzymes having role in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. Purification and overproduction of such enzymes has increased their usage in medical fields including metalloproteinases with the ability to degrade extracellular matrix (ECM). Camelysin, a neutral metalloproteinase has been isolated from different species of bacteria like Bacillus cereus, Bacillus anthracis, and Bacillus thuringiensis with fibrinolytic, collagenolytic and actin degradation activity. This project successfully demonstrated the presence of 734-bp coding DNA sequence (CDS) encoding a 20.72331 kDa camelysin gene in local strain of Bacillus thuringiensis containing a signal peptide with cleavage site between residues 19 and 20. The sequence was submitted to GenBank (KT023597) and the sequence showed high homology with the camelysin protein of closely related Bacillus species. The alignment of related proteins through ClustalW displayed difference of four amino acids (“Q” replaced by “P” at position 169 and at position 182–184, “NQE” replaced by “HLK”) in the isolated protein. Comparison including structural and functional analysis of camelysin sequences isolated from different Bacillus species was carried out using different bioinformatics tools and software. The information would help in better understanding the properties of camelysin protein and its role in pathogenicity and clinical treatments. 相似文献

Rat bite fever is an under-reported, under-diagnosed emerging zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Besides Spirillum minus, Streptobacillus moniliformis is the major causative microorganism although it usually colonises rats without any clinical signs. A group of house rats (Rattus rattus) kept in a zoo exhibition for educational purposes suffered from neurological signs including disorientation, torticollis, stall walking, ataxia and death. Gross pathological and histo-pathological examinations of the investigated rats revealed high-grade otitis interna et media, from which Streptobacillus notomytis was isolated in pure culture or as the predominant microorganism. This case series underlines a previously expressed hypothesis that R. rattus might be naturally colonised with S. notomytis, whereas the traditional rat bite fever organism, S. moniliformis, might be restricted to the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus). However, the general paucity of Streptobacillus isolates, especially from their respective animal hosts, precludes definitive proof of these host tropisms. This is the first report of S. notomytis detection outside Asia and Australia and the first evidence for its role as a facultative pathogen in house rats. 相似文献

The genes encoding aminoglycoside resistance in Enterococcus faecalis may promote collateral aminoglycoside resistance in polymicrobial wounds. We studied a total of 100 diabetic foot ulcer samples for infection and found 60 samples to be polymicrobial, 5 to be monomicrobial, and 35 samples to be culture negative. A total of 65 E. faecalis isolates were screened for six genes coding for aminoglycoside resistance, antibiotic resistance patterns, and biofilm production. Infectious Diseases Society of America/International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot system was used to classify the wound ulcers. Majority of the subjects with culture-positive wound were recommended conservative management, while 14 subjects underwent amputation. Enterococcal isolates showed higher resistance for erythromycin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. Isolates from grade 3 ulcer showed higher frequency of aac(6′)-Ie-aph(2″)-Ia, while all the isolates were negative for aph(2″)-Ib, aph(2″)-Ic, and aph(2″)-Id. The isolates from grade 3 ulcers showed higher resistance to aminoglycosides as well as teicoplanin and chloramphenicol. All the 39 biofilm producers were obtained from polymicrobial wound and showed higher resistance when compared to biofilm non-producers. Higher frequency of isolates carrying aac(6′)-Ie-aph(2″)-Ia in polymicrobial community showing resistance to key antibiotics suggests widespread distribution of aminoglycoside-resistant E. faecalis and their role in worsening diabetic foot ulcers. 相似文献
