Summary The regional distribution of cerebral glucose utilization, revealed by the14C-2DG technique, was compared between (i) toads after stimulus-specific long-term habituation of the orienting response toward a repeatedly presented prey dummy (habituation group) and (ii) non-habituated toads, readily orienting toward the repetitively presented prey stimulus (naive group). In the habituation group, the ventral medial pallium (vMP), a certain portion of the preoptic area (PO), and the dorsal hypothalamus (dHYP) showed a statistically significantincrease in14C-2DG-uptake;decrease was observed in the ventral layers of the optic tectum (vOT), a portion of the tegmental reticular formation (RET), the ventral cerebellum (vCB), and the striatum (STR). The results suggest that stimulus-specific long-term habituation of prey-catching affects both, components of thestimulus-response mediating circuit (e.g., involving OT), and structures extrinsic to it, (e.g., vMP, PO, dHYP), which may belong to amodulatory circuitry. Bilateral lesions to vMP strongly delay habituation. Evidence is provided that during invertebrate development synapses undergo a period of refinement during which there are changes in synaptic connectivity and specific synaptic properties. It appears that extrinsic cues such as competition and neural activity are involved in guiding these synaptic changes in invertebrates. Culturable bacteria from the deep subsurface (179 m) at Cerro Negro, New Mexico were isolated and characterized. The average number of viable aerobic bacteria was estimated to be 5×105g–1 of sediment, but only about 0.1% of these could be recovered on agar medium when incubated under aerobic conditions. Of 158 strains isolated from this depth, 92 were characterized by cellular fatty acid profiles (FAME), 36 by analysis of partial 16S rDNA sequences, and 44 by rep-PCR genome fingerprint analysis using three different sets of oligonucleotide primers (REP, BOX, or ERIC). These analyses showed the majority of isolates (67%) were Gram-positive bacteria and primarily members of genera with a high %G+C DNA. The remaining isolates were -subdivisionProteobacteria (19%) and members of the flavobacteria group (14%). The diversity indices based on these different methods of characterization were very high suggesting this subsurface habitat harbors a highly diverse microbial community.  相似文献

The mechanism by which orderly axonal projections are formed during development remains an important and largely unsolved problem in neurobiology. It may be possible to examine the control of axon growth in Drosophila and take advantage of genetic tools to better understand the phenomenon. We show here that some gustatory axons in Drosophila are sexually dimorphic and that genes involved in sex determination control the anatomy of these axons. Both males and females possess gustatory receptors on their legs but males possess more of these receptors than females. More significantly, the axons of the male receptors usually cross the midline and they never do so in females, indicating a central zone of bilateral input in the male but not in the female nervous system. In chromosomal females, expressing a tra or Sxl mutation, the gustatory system is transformed toward the male phenotype. Mutant XX adults resemble normal males externally, because they have more gustatory receptors, and internally, because their axons cross the midline. Gynandromorphs show that the sex of the sensory neuron, and apparently not the central nervous system, controls the growth of the axons. We conclude that the anatomical site of control for this dimorphism is the gustatory neurons.  相似文献

Previous studies demonstrate a role for β epithelial Na(+) channel (βENaC) protein as a mediator of myogenic constriction in renal interlobar arteries. However, the importance of βENaC as a mediator of myogenic constriction in renal afferent arterioles, the primary site of development of renal vascular resistance, has not been determined. We colocalized βENaC with smooth muscle α-actin in vascular smooth muscle cells in renal arterioles using immunofluorescence. To determine the importance of βENaC in myogenic constriction in renal afferent arterioles, we used a mouse model of reduced βENaC (βENaC m/m) and examined pressure-induced constrictor responses in the isolated afferent arteriole-attached glomerulus preparation. We found that, in response to a step increase in perfusion pressure from 60 to 120 mmHg, the myogenic tone increased from 4.5 ± 3.7 to 27.3 ± 5.2% in +/+ mice. In contrast, myogenic tone failed to increase with the pressure step in m/m mice (3.9 ± 0.8 to 6.9 ± 1.4%). To determine the importance of βENaC in myogenic renal blood flow (RBF) regulation, we examined the rate of change in renal vascular resistance following a step increase in perfusion pressure in volume-expanded animals. We found that, following a step increase in pressure, the rate of myogenic correction of RBF is inhibited by 75% in βENaC m/m mice. These findings demonstrate that myogenic constriction in afferent arterioles is dependent on normal expression of βENaC.  相似文献

In this report we describe the analysis of an advanced intercross line (AIL) to confirm the quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions found for fatness traits in a previous study. QTL analysis was performed on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 15, 18, and 27. The AIL was created by random intercrossing in each generation from generation 2 (G2) onwards until generation 9 (G9) was reached. QTL for abdominal fat weight (AFW) and/or percentage abdominal fat (AF%) on chromosomes 1, 3 and 27 were confirmed in the G9 population. In addition, evidence for QTL for body weight at the age of 5 (BW5) and 7 (BW7) weeks and for the percentage of intramuscular fat (IF%) were found on chromosomes 1, 3, 15, and 27. Significant evidence for QTL was detected on chromosome 1 for BW5 and BW7. Suggestive evidence was found on chromosome 1 for AFW, AF% and IF%, on chromosome 15 for BW5, and on chromosome 27 for AF% and IF%. Furthermore, evidence on the chromosome-wise level was found on chromosome 3 for AFW, AF%, and BW7 and on chromosome 27 for BW5. For chromosomes 4 and 18, test statistics did not exceed the significance threshold.  相似文献
