Secondary sexual characters may have evolved in part to signalresistance to parasites. Avian song has been hypothesized tobe involved in this process, but the role of parasites in modulatingacoustic communication systems in birds remains largely unknown,owing to lack of experiments. We studied the relationship betweenparasitism, testosterone, song performance, and mating successin male collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) by experimentallychallenging their immune system with a novel antigen. We predictedthat a challenge of the immune system would reduce song performance,and that this reduction would be conditional on the size ofa visual sexual signal, the forehead patch that was previouslyfound to reflect resistance. An antagonistic linkage betweentestosterone and immune function would predict that a challengeof the immune system should suppress testosterone level. Animmunological treatment by sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) triggereda decrease in body mass, testosterone level, and song rate,but other song traits were not significantly affected by theantigen challenge. Initial testosterone level was associatedwith forehead patch size and all song traits except song rate.SRBC injection caused stronger reduction in song rate amongmales with smaller forehead patches, and the change in songrate was also predictable by song features such as strophe complexityand length. We show that song rate and other song characteristicsmay be important cues in male-male competition and female choice.These results suggest that parasite-mediated sexual selectionhas contributed in shaping a complex acoustic communicationsystem in the collared flycatcher, and that testosterone mayplay an important role in this process. Parasitism may drivea multiple signaling mechanism involving acoustic and visualtraits with different signal function.  相似文献

The finite element (FE) method has been used in recent years to simulate overturning processes in trees and to better comprehend plant anchorage mechanics. We aimed at understanding the fundamental mechanisms of root-soil reinforcement by simulating direct shear of rooted and non-rooted soil. Two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) FE simulations of direct shear box tests were carried out using readily available software for routine strength assessment of the root-soil composite. Both rooted and non-rooted blocks of soil were modelled using a simplified model of root distribution and root material properties representative of real roots. Linear elastic behaviour was assumed for roots and the soil was modelled as an ideally plastic medium. FE analysis showed that direct shear tests were dependent on the material properties specified for both the soil and roots. 2D and 3D simulations of direct shear of non-rooted soil produced similar results and any differences between 2D and 3D simulations could be explained with regard to the spatial complexity of roots used in the root distribution model. The application of FE methods was verified through direct shear tests on soil with analogue roots and the results compared to in situ tests on rooted soil in field conditions.  相似文献

Oncoprotein E6 is essential for oncogenesis induced by human papillomaviruses (HPVs). The solution structure of HPV16-E6 C-terminal domain reveals a zinc binding fold. A model of full-length E6 is proposed and analyzed in the context of HPV evolution. E6 appears as a chameleon protein combining a conserved structural scaffold with highly variable surfaces participating in generic or specialized HPV functions. We investigated surface residues involved in two specialized activities of high-risk genital HPV E6: p53 tumor suppressor degradation and nucleic acid binding. Screening of E6 surface mutants identified an in vivo p53 degradation-defective mutant that fails to recruit p53 to ubiquitin ligase E6AP and restores high p53 levels in cervical carcinoma cells by competing with endogeneous E6. We also mapped the nucleic acid binding surface of E6, the positive potential of which correlates with genital oncogenicity. E6 structure-function analysis provides new clues for understanding and counteracting the complex pathways of HPV-mediated pathogenesis.  相似文献

Divergence in the onset of reproduction can act as an important source of reproductive isolation (i.e., allochronic isolation) between co‐occurring young species, but evidence for the evolutionary processes leading to such divergence is often indirect. While advancing spring seasons strongly affect the onset of reproduction in many taxa, it remains largely unexplored whether contemporary spring advancement directly affects allochronic isolation between young species. We examined how increasing spring temperatures affected onset of reproduction and thereby hybridization between pied and collared flycatchers (Ficedula spp.) across habitat types in a young secondary contact zone. We found that both species have advanced their timing of breeding in 14 years. However, selection on pied flycatchers to breed earlier was weaker, resulting in a slower response to advancing springs compared to collared flycatchers and thereby build‐up of allochronic isolation between the species. We argue that a preadaptation to a broader niche use (diet) of pied flycatchers explains the slower response to raising spring temperature, but that reduced risk to hybridize may contribute to further divergence in the onset of breeding in the future. Our results show that minor differences in the response to environmental change of co‐occurring closely related species can quickly cause allochronic isolation.  相似文献

Variation in relative fitness of competing recently formed species across heterogeneous environments promotes coexistence. However, the physiological traits mediating such variation in relative fitness have rarely been identified. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is tightly associated with life history strategies, thermoregulation, diet use, and inhabited latitude and could therefore moderate differences in fitness responses to fluctuations in local environments, particularly when species have adapted to different climates in allopatry. We work in a long‐term study of collared (Ficedula albicollis) and pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) in a recent hybrid zone located on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. Here, we explore whether differences in RMR match changes in relative performance of growing flycatcher nestlings across environmental conditions using an experimental approach. The fitness of pied flycatchers has previously been shown to be less sensitive to the mismatch between the peak in food abundance and nestling growth among late breeders. Here, we find that pied flycatcher nestlings have lower RMR in response to higher ambient temperatures (associated with low food availability). We also find that experimentally relaxed nestling competition is associated with an increased RMR in this species. In contrast, collared flycatcher nestlings did not vary their RMR in response to these environmental factors. Our results suggest that a more flexible nestling RMR in pied flycatchers is responsible for the better adaptation of pied flycatchers to the typical seasonal changes in food availability experienced in this hybrid zone. Generally, subtle physiological differences that have evolved when species were in allopatry may play an important role to patterns of competition, coexistence, or displacements between closely related species in secondary contact.  相似文献

In the past decade, notable progress has been made in rice molecular genetic mapping using genomic or cDNA clones. A total of over 3000 DNA markers, mainly with RFLPs, have been mapped on the rice genome. In addition, many studies related to tagging of genes of interest, gene isolation by map-based cloning and comparative mapping between cereal genomes have advanced along with the development of a high-density molecular genetic map. Thus rice is considered a pivotal plant among cereal crops and, in addition to Arabidopsis, is a model plant in genome analysis. In this article, the current status of the construction of rice molecular genetic maps and their applications are reviewed.  相似文献

Physiol. 82(6):1897-1904, 1997.We tested the hypothesis that prolonged exposureto high altitude would impair the restoration of muscle power duringrepeated sprints. Seven subjects performed two 20-s Wingate tests (WT1and WT2) separated by 5 min of recovery, at sea level (N) and after5-6 days at 4,350 m (H). Mean power output (MPO) andO2 deficit were measured duringWT. O2 uptake(O2) and ventilation(E) were measured continuously. Blood velocity in the femoral artery (FBV) wasrecorded by Doppler ultrasound during recovery. Arterialized blood pHand concentrations of bicarbonate([HCO3]), venousplasma lactate([La]),norepinephrine ([NE]), and epinephrine ([Epi])were measured before and after WT1 and WT2. MPO decreased between WT1and WT2 by 6.9% in N (P < 0.05) andby 10.7% in H (P < 0.01). H did not further decrease MPO. O2 deficitdecreased between WT1 and WT2 in H only(P < 0.01). PeakO2 after WT was reduced by30-40% in H (P < 0.01), butexcess postexercise O2 consumptionwas not significantly lowered in H. During recovery in H compared with N, E,exercise-induced acidosis, and [NE] were higher,[Epi] tended to be higher,[La] was notaltered, and [HCO3] andFBV were lower. The similar[La]accumulation was associated with a higher exercise-induced acidosis anda larger increase in [NE] in H. We concluded from thisstudy that prolonged exposure to high altitude did not significantly impair the restoration of muscle power during repeated sprints, despitea limitation of aerobic processes during early recovery.

Using evolutionary theory to predict the dynamics of populations is one of the aims of evolutionary conservation. In endangered species, with geographic range extending over continuous areas, the predictive capacity of evolutionary‐based conservation measures greatly depends on the accurate identification of reproductive units. The endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a highly migratory fish species with declining population due to a steep recruitment collapse in the beginning of the 1980s. Despite punctual observations of genetic structure, the population is viewed as a single panmictic reproductive unit. To understand the possible origin of the detected structure in this species, we used a combination of mitochondrial and nuclear loci to indirectly evaluate the possible existence of cryptic demes. For that, 403 glass eels from three successive cohorts arriving at a single location were screened for phenotypic and genetic diversity, while controlling for possible geographic variation. Over the 3 years of sampling, we consistently identified three major matrilines which we hypothesized to represent demes. Interestingly, not only we found that population genetic models support the existence of those matriline‐driven demes over a completely panmictic mode of reproduction, but also we found evidence for asymmetric gene flow amongst those demes. We uphold the suggestion that the detection of demes related to those matrilines reflect a fragmented spawning ground, a conceptually plausible consequence of the low abundance that the European eel has been experiencing for three decades. Furthermore, we suggest that this cryptic organization may contribute to the maintenance of the adaptive potential of the species.  相似文献
