A 28-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with acute pulmonary edema, mild abdominal discomfort and hyperamylasemia. From the 2nd hospital day hypertensive episodes occurred daily. The furosemide screening test for renovascular hypertension revealed elevated plasma renin activity (PRA) but an intravenous pyelogram revealed a right suprarenal mass and no evidence of renovascular compression. Elevated values of plasma and urinary catecholamines indicated a pheochromocytoma, and a single chromaffin tumour was resected. It is important to monitor left ventricular filling pressure during operative removal of a pheochromocytoma. Postoperatively the patient had normal blood pressure and PRA. Decreased urinary amylase clearance and abnormal pancreatic and salivary amylase isoenzymes were found. 相似文献

Brachyspira murdochii Stanton et al. 1992 is a non-pathogenic, host-associated spirochete of the family Brachyspiraceae. Initially isolated from the intestinal content of a healthy swine, the 'group B spirochaetes' were first described as Serpulina murdochii. Members of the family Brachyspiraceae are of great phylogenetic interest because of the extremely isolated location of this family within the phylum 'Spirochaetes'. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence and annotation. This is the first completed genome sequence of a type strain of a member of the family Brachyspiraceae and only the second genome sequence from a member of the genus Brachyspira. The 3,241,804 bp long genome with its 2,893 protein-coding and 40 RNA genes is a part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project. 相似文献

Thermocrinis albus Eder and Huber 2002 is one of three species in the genus Thermocrinis in the family Aquificaceae. Members of this family have become of significant interest because of their involvement in global biogeochemical cycles in high-temperature ecosystems. This interest had already spurred several genome sequencing projects for members of the family. We here report the first completed genome sequence a member of the genus Thermocrinis and the first type strain genome from a member of the family Aquificaceae. The 1,500,577 bp long genome with its 1,603 protein-coding and 47 RNA genes is part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project. 相似文献

Thermosediminibacter oceani (Lee et al. 2006) is the type species of the genus Thermosediminibacter in the family Thermoanaerobacteraceae. The anaerobic, barophilic, chemoorganotrophic thermophile is characterized by straight to curved Gram-negative rods. The strain described in this study was isolated from a core sample of deep sea sediments of the Peruvian high productivity upwelling system. This is the first completed genome sequence of a member of the genus Thermosediminibacter and the seventh genome sequence in the family Thermoanaerobacteraceae. Escherichia coli is a highly versatile species encompassing a diverse spectrum of strains, i.e. from highly virulent isolates causing serious
infectious diseases to commensals and probiotic strains. Although much is known about bacterial pathogenicity in E. coli, the understanding of which genetic determinants differentiates a virulent from an avirulent strain still remains limited.
In this study we designed a new comparative genomic hybridization microarray based on 31 sequenced E. coli strains and used it to compare two E. coli strains used as prophylactic agents (i.e. Nissle 1917 and 83972) with the highly virulent uropathogen CFT073. Only relatively
minor genetic variations were found between the isolates, suggesting that the three strains may have originated from the same
virulent ancestral parent. Interestingly, Nissle 1917 (a gut commensal strain) was more similar to CFT073 with respect to
genotype and phenotype than 83972 (an asymptomatic bacteriuria strain). The study indicates that genetic variations (e.g.
mutations) and expression differences, rather than genomic content per se, contribute to the divergence in disease-causing
ability between these strains. This has implications for the use of virulence factors in epidemiological research, and emphasizes
the need for more comparative genomic studies of closely related strains to compare their virulence potential. 相似文献

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) undertake spawning migrations of more than 5000 km from continental Europe and North Africa to frontal zones in the Sargasso Sea. Subsequently, the larval offspring are advected by large-scale eastward ocean currents towards continental waters. However, the Sargasso Sea is oligotrophic, with generally low plankton biomass, and the feeding biology of eel larvae has so far remained a mystery, hampering understanding of this peculiar life history. DNA barcoding of gut contents of 61 genetically identified A. anguilla larvae caught in the Sargasso Sea showed that even the smallest larvae feed on a striking variety of plankton organisms, and that gelatinous zooplankton is of fundamental dietary importance. Hence, the specific plankton composition seems essential for eel larval feeding and growth, suggesting a linkage between eel survival and regional plankton productivity. These novel insights into the prey of Atlantic eels may furthermore facilitate eel larval rearing in aquaculture, which ultimately may replace the unsustainable use of wild-caught glass eels. 相似文献

Maximum urine-concentrating capacity (UCC) differs widely among mammals of different species, being very high in some desert species (e.g. kangaroo rats) and very low in freshwater acquatic species (e.g. beaver). In this study, kidneys of 21 species of mammals from widely different habitats were studied in histological sections to determine whether differences in UCC can be attributed to differences in kidney structure. Parameters studied included the ratio of medullary to cortical thickness, the proportional subdivision of the medulla into inner and outer zones, and the dimensions of the vasa recta expressed in terms of the total area and the number of lumens within the vascular bundles. Determinations were made at a level where the size of individual vasa recta bundles has reached a constant maximum size, i.e. in the distal half of the outer zone. A positive correlation was found between the UCC and the ratio of medullary length to cortical thickness. No clear correlation existed between the proportion of the medullary length comprised of outer or inner zones and the UCC, although a trend to higher UCC in animals with relatively longer inner zones was apparent. Thus, it appears that the relative length of the entire medullary region is a major factor determining UCC, but the length of individual medullary zones is of lesser importance. A correlation was also found between the density of vasa recta per cubic millimeter of medullary tissue (the number of lumens regardless of identify in bundles, based on the number counted at the level sampled) and the UCC of the species. Data reported here support the view that UCC can be correlated with two parameters of kidney structure - the length of medulla relative to that of cortex and the density of vasa recta within the outer zone. It is proposed that the anatomical characteristics of the vascular supply to the medulla - that is, the vasa recta - are equally as important for the concentration of urine as is the primary mechanism determined by the characteristics of the loop of Henle and collecting ducts. 相似文献
