The crossability between Brassica tournefortii (TT, 2n = 20) and Brassica rapa (AA, 2n = 20) and the cytomorphology of their F1 hybrids were studied. Hybrids between these two species were obtained only when B. tournefortii was involved as a female parent. The hybrid plants were intermediate for most of the morphological attributes and were found
to be free from white rust under field conditions. The F1 plants showed poor pollen fertility, although occasional seed set was achieved from open pollination. Self-pollination or
backcrosses did not yield any seeds in these plants. The occurrence of chromosome association ranging from bivalents (0–7),
trivalents (0–2) to a rare quadrivalent (0–1) in the dihaploid hybrids indicates pairing between the T and A genomes. The
homoeologous pairing coupled with seed set in the F1 plants offer an opportunity for interspecific gene transfers from B. tournefortii to B. rapa and vice-versa through interspecific hybridization.

We assessed the effects of long-term habitat fragmentation on genetic (random amplified polymorphic DNA) diversity in 11 Peromyscus maniculatus populations in the Lake Superior watershed. We analysed genetic structure at two spatial scales and the effect of island size and isolation on genetic diversity. At the regional scale, island populations differed from mainland populations (FST = 0.36), but mainland populations did not differ from each other (FST = 0.01). At the local scale, populations of the main island of Isle Royale differed from adjacent islet populations (P < 0.001; Monte Carlo approximation of Fisher's exact test), but not from each other (combined P = 0.63). Although geographical distance and genetic distance were positively correlated (P < 0.01; Mantel test), cluster analysis revealed some inconsistencies. Finally, genetic diversity was inversely related to isolation (P = 0.01), but had an unexpectedly negative relationship with island area (P = 0.03). The genetic structure of P. maniculatus populations in portions of the Lake Superior watershed appears to have been affected by long-term habitat fragmentation. 相似文献

Cardiolipin (CL), the signature lipid of mitochondria, plays a critical role in mitochondrial function and biogenesis. The availability of yeast mutants blocked in CL synthesis has facilitated studies of the biological role of this lipid. Perturbation of CL synthesis leads to growth defects not only during respiratory growth but also under conditions in which respiration is not essential. CL was shown to play a role in mitochondrial protein import, cell wall biogenesis, aging and apoptosis, ceramide synthesis, and translation of electron transport chain components. The genetic disorder Barth syndrome (BTHS) is caused by mutations in the tafazzin gene resulting in decreased total CL levels, accumulation of monolysocardiolipin (MLCL), and decreased unsaturated fatty acyl species of CL. The variation in clinical presentation of BTHS indicates that other physiological factors play a significant role in modifying the phenotype resulting from tafazzin deficiency. Elucidating the functions of CL is expected to shed light on the role of this important lipid in BTHS and other disorders of mitochondrial dysfunction. 相似文献

Four Plasmodium species cause malaria in humans: Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread and results in pronounced morbidity. India (population >1 billion) is a major contributor to the burden of vivax malaria. With a resurgence in interest concerning the neglected burden of vivax malaria and the completion of the P. vivax genome, it is timely to review what is known concerning P. vivax in India. The P. vivax population is highly diverse in terms of relapse patterns, drug response and clinical profiles, and highly genetically variable according to studies of antigen genes, isoenzyme markers and microsatellites. The unique epidemiology of malaria in India, where P. vivax predominates over Plasmodium falciparum, renders this location ideal for studying the dynamics of co-infection. 相似文献

Determining the effect of elevated CO(2) on the tolerance of photosynthesis to acute heat stress (AHS) is necessary for predicting plant responses to global warming because photosynthesis is heat sensitive and AHS and atmospheric CO(2) will increase in the future. Few studies have examined this effect, and past results were variable, which may be related to methodological variation among studies. In this study, we grew 11 species that included cool and warm season and C(3), C(4), and CAM species at current or elevated (370 or 700 ppm) CO(2) and at species-specific optimal growth temperatures and at 30°C (if optimal ≠ 30°C). We then assessed thermotolerance of net photosynthesis (P(n)), stomatal conductance (g(st)), leaf internal [CO(2)], and photosystem II (PSII) and post-PSII electron transport during AHS. Thermotolerance of P(n) in elevated (vs. ambient) CO(2) increased in C(3), but decreased in C(4) (especially) and CAM (high growth temperature only), species. In contrast, elevated CO(2) decreased electron transport in 10 of 11 species. High CO(2) decreased g(st) in five of nine species, but stomatal limitations to P(n) increased during AHS in only two cool-season C(3) species. Thus, benefits of elevated CO(2) to photosynthesis at normal temperatures may be partly offset by negative effects during AHS, especially for C(4) species, so effects of elevated CO(2) on acute heat tolerance may contribute to future changes in plant productivity, distribution, and diversity. 相似文献

DupTree is a new software program for inferring rooted species trees from collections of gene trees using the gene tree parsimony approach. The program implements a novel algorithm that significantly improves upon the run time of standard search heuristics for gene tree parsimony, and enables the first truly genome-scale phylogenetic analyses. In addition, DupTree allows users to examine alternate rootings and to weight the reconciliation costs for gene trees. DupTree is an open source project written in C++. DNA barcodes in species tagging have become a popular tool for taking inventories of species from different groups worldwide. The present study aimed to generate DNA barcodes of butterfly species from the Western Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. The Indian Western Himalayan region (IWHR) has been explored to a limited extent about butterfly species’ diversity. However, the IWHR is prone to environmental change, and slight variations in climatic conditions can influence species diversity and change butterflies' range. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene was first used to generate the DNA barcode for butterflies from this region on a broad scale. 28 morphologically identified species, consisting of 102 sequences, were finally grouped into 26 species, with only two species showing ambiguity in species identification. These species had < 3% sequence variations from their neighboring relatives, suggesting cryptic species diversity. Generated sequences were also compared with the GenBank data of conspecific geographical locations, which showed intraspecies variation ranging from 1.3% to 7.3%. It was also noted that butterfly species have both intra and interspecies sequence divergence. In the phylogenetic-based species identification, a total of 28 species belonging to 4 families of butterflies were successfully discriminated, and two species at the genus level, which had high intra-specific divergence (0.025), were considered. Trans-Himalayan mountains, owing to harsh climatic conditions and a short growing season support low vegetation cover (<20%),
yet it is known to harbour a unique assemblage of flora and fauna which have not been systematically inventoried and documented
so far. This paper deals with spatial and non-spatial information on landscape units, vegetation characteristics and plant
species diversity of Nubra Valley in Ladakh, India. Based on digital – visual (on screen) interpretation of remote sensing
data coupled with knowledge-based classification we delineated 19 cover classes (11 vegetation types and 8 non-vegetation
categories). The vascular plants (angiosperms and gymnosperms) were systematically collected using stratified random sampling
of different landscape/vegetation to characterize plant communities and assess the distribution patterns of species. The study
reveals that nearly 78–80% of plant species in Nubra are restricted to the valley bottoms. In all, 414 species of vascular
plants were recorded from the study area. These belongs to 56 families and 202 genera. Of these, 102 species were reported
to be used in traditional system of medicine by Amchis over 80 species are largely associated with cultivated fields and human
habitation. As many as 49 species were cultivated which include several varieties of crop plants especially those of barley
and buckwheat. Aspects of bioprospecting and conservation of valuable species have been discussed. 相似文献
