Previous studies have focused on changes in the geographical distribution of terrestrial biomes and species targeted by marine capture fisheries due to climate change impacts. Given mariculture's substantial contribution to global seafood production and its growing significance in recent decades, it is essential to evaluate the effects of climate change on mariculture and their socio‐economic consequences. Here, we projected climate change impacts on the marine aquaculture diversity for 85 of the currently most commonly farmed fish and invertebrate species in the world's coastal and/or open ocean areas. Results of ensemble projections from three Earth system models and three species distribution models show that climate change may lead to a substantial redistribution of mariculture species richness potential, with an average of 10%–40% decline in the number of species being potentially suitable to be farmed in tropical to subtropical regions. In contrast, mariculture species richness potential is projected to increase by about 40% at higher latitudes under the ‘no mitigation policy’ scenario (RCP 8.5) by the mid‐21st century. In Exclusive Economic Zones where mariculture is currently undertaken, we projected an average future decline of 1.3% and 5% in mariculture species richness potential under RCP 2.6 (‘strong mitigation’) and RCP 8.5 scenarios, respectively, by the 2050s relative to the 2000s. Our findings highlight the opportunities and challenges for climate adaptation in the mariculture sector through the redistribution of farmed species and expansion of mariculture locations. Our results can help inform adaptation planning and governance mechanisms to minimize local environmental impacts and potential conflicts with other marine and coastal sectors in the future. 相似文献

BackgroundCommunity-based management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) involves weekly or biweekly outpatient clinic visits for clinical surveillance and distribution of therapeutic foods. Distance to outpatient clinics and high opportunity costs for caregivers can represent major barriers to access. Reducing the frequency of outpatient visits while providing training to caregivers to recognize clinical danger signs at home between outpatient visits may increase acceptability, coverage, and public health impact of SAM treatment. We investigated the effectiveness of monthly clinic visits compared to the standard weekly follow-up in the outpatient treatment of uncomplicated SAM in northwestern Nigeria.Methods and findingsWe conducted a cluster randomized crossover trial to test the noninferiority of nutritional recovery in children with uncomplicated SAM receiving monthly follow-up compared to the standard weekly schedule. From January 2018 to November 2019, 3,945 children aged 6 to 59 months were enrolled at 10 health centers (5 assigned to monthly follow-up and 5 assigned to weekly follow-up) in Sokoto, Nigeria. In total, 96% of children (n = 1,976 in the monthly follow-up group and 1,802 in the weekly follow-up group) were followed until program discharge, and 91% (n = 1,873 in the monthly follow-up group and 1,721 in the weekly follow-up group) were followed to 3 months postdischarge. The mean age at admission was 15.8 months (standard deviation [SD] 7.1), 2,097/3,945 (53.2%) were girls, and the mean midupper arm circumference (MUAC) at admission was 105.8 mm (SD 6.0). In a modified intention-to-treat analysis, the primary outcome of nutritional recovery, defined as having MUAC ≥125 mm on 2 consecutive visits, was analyzed using generalized linear models, with generalized estimating equations to account for clustering. Nutritional recovery was lower in the monthly follow-up group compared to the weekly group (1,036/1,976, 52.4% versus 1,059/1,802, 58.8%; risk difference: −6.8%), and noninferiority was not demonstrated (lower bound of the confidence interval [CI] was −11.5%, lower than the noninferiority margin of 10%). The proportion of children defaulting was lower in the monthly group than in the weekly group (109/1,976, 5.5% versus 151/1,802, 8.4%, p = 0.03). Three months postdischarge, children in the monthly group were less likely to relapse compared to those in the weekly group (58/976, 5.9% versus 78/1,005, 7.8%, p = 0.03), but cumulative mortality at 3 months postdischarge was higher in the monthly group (159/1,873, 8.5% versus 106/1,721, 6.2%, p < 0.001). Study results may depend on context-specific factors including baseline level of care and the clinical status of children presenting to health centers, and, thus, generalizability of these results may be limited.ConclusionsWhere feasible, a weekly schedule of clinic visits should be preferred to maintain effectiveness of SAM treatment. Where geographic coverage of programs is low or frequent travel to outpatient clinics is difficult or impossible, a monthly schedule of visits may provide an alternative model to deliver treatment to those in need. Modifications to the outpatient follow-up schedule, for example, weekly clinic visits until initial weight gain has been achieved followed by monthly visits, could increase the effectiveness of the model and add flexibility for program delivery.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov .Matt D.T. In different parts of the world, Cucumis melo Linn. (C melo) is used for its medicinal properties. The present study examined the effects of a methanolic extract of C melo Linn. (F1 hybrid, MECM) on benign prostatic hyperplasia in adult male Wistar rats and evaluated its anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. MECM treatment reduced prostate weight mildly. Histopathological studies showed that the extract produced a strong protective effect against the development of BPH by testosterone. The MECM also showed protection from testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MECM was tested against carrageenan-induced inflammation in rats' paws to determine its anti-inflammatory activity. It was shown that MECM had a pronounced effect on the inflammatory response in the late phase, i.e., one hour after carrageenan injection. Prostaglandins and nitric oxide are primarily responsible for this phase indicating that MECM can modify the production and release of prostaglandin and nitric oxide. A novel formulation containing C melo may be able to treat the conditions mentioned above. 相似文献

Many protein-protein interactions are mediated through independently folding modular domains. Proteome-wide efforts to model protein-protein interaction or "interactome" networks have largely ignored this modular organization of proteins. We developed an experimental strategy to efficiently identify interaction domains and generated a domain-based interactome network for proteins involved in C. elegans early-embryonic cell divisions. Minimal interacting regions were identified for over 200 proteins, providing important information on their domain organization. Furthermore, our approach increased the sensitivity of the two-hybrid system, resulting in a more complete interactome network. This interactome modeling strategy revealed insights into C. elegans centrosome function and is applicable to other biological processes in this and other organisms. 相似文献

The complexes formed between Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSBP) and the heavy atom-modified single-stranded polynucleotides poly(5-BrU) and poly(5-HgU) are investigated using optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) methods. In these complexes the triplet state properties of the tryptophan residues are subjected to the external heavy atom effect generated by bromine and mercury atoms and are characterized by a shortened triplet state lifetime and the appearance of the otherwise dark [D] + [E] slow passage ODMR signal. These features provide direct evidence for close range interactions between tryptophan residue(s) and the nucleotide bases in the complexes. The extent of the triplet state lifetime reduction in the case of the SSBP-poly(5-HgU) complex together with steric considerations of the complex structure is consistent only with a van der Waals contact between the perturbed molecule and the heavy atom perturber by means of a stacking interaction. Fast passage ODMR measurements show a lifetime for a sublevel of the perturbed tryptophan chromophore(s) in this complex on the order of 1 ms. The amplitude-modulated phosphorescence microwave double resonance technique captures selectively the broadened and red-shifted phosphorescence spectrum of the heavy atom-perturbed tryptophan residue(s). This work supports a model for the binding of SSBP to single-stranded polynucleotides in which the bases are inserted into hydrophobic regions of the protein, where they are likely to undergo stacking interactions with the indole moiety of buried tryptophan residues. 相似文献

Two novel combination therapies for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia were analyzed using simple and enhanced spectrofluorimetric methods based on derivative and derivative ratio techniques. The two combinations contained tamsulosin hydrochloride (TAM) as a minor component with tolterodine tartrate (TOL) or solifenacin succinate (SOL). The fluorescence of the three drugs under study was measured in methanolic water solution. For the TAM and SOL mixture, successful resolution between both drugs was achieved by derivative manipulation of both ratio and zero‐order emission spectra with good linearity in the ranges of 0.75–3.50 and 2.5–15.0 μg ml?1 for TAM and SOL, respectively. Extensive emission spectral overlap was observed for the TAM and TOL mixture. Therefore, only derivative application of the ratio emission spectra resolved such overlap and quantitated TAM and TOL simultaneously in the ranges 0.75–3.50 and 2.5–20.0 μg ml–1 for TAM and TOL, respectively. Optimization of various experimental parameters that affected the fluorescence intensity of the three drugs was performed. Successful application of all proposed methods was achieved for analysis of the two drugs in each combination therapy in their laboratory‐prepared mixtures and dosage forms with good accuracy and precision. 相似文献

Two hundred and eighty one soil samples from different provinces of Kenya were examined for dermatophytes by the hair baiting technique. Dermatophytes were recovered from 84 samples. Microsporum gypseum constituted 75.8% of the total isolates while Keratinomyces ajelloi and M. cookei formed 21% and 3.2%, respectively. The distribution of the dermatophytes was influenced by soil pH, being more prevalent in acidic than in alkaline soils. 相似文献
