Organophosphate poisoning in the developed world – A single centre experience from here to the millennium

Organophosphate (OP) poisoning is still associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, both in resource-poor settings and in well-developed countries. Despite numerous publications dealing with this particular poison, detailed clinical data on more severe overdoses with these agents are relatively sparsely reported. A retrospective study was consequently conducted on 33 patients with OP poisoning admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) to provide additional data on clinical features. We included moderate to severe poisonings between 2000 and 2012 who required admission to ICU.     

Alkanetriols in psilotophyte cutins

The covalently bonded components of the stem cutin of Psilotum include 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid and substantial amounts of hexadecane-1,8,16-triol. While of generally similar composition, leaf cutin of Tmesipteris contains a mixture of hexadecanetriol isomers. The findings suggest that psilotophyte cutins evolved in a different manner from those of other land plants.     

Dynorphin-Related Opioid Peptides in the Neurointermediate Pituitary of Rats Are Not α-N-Acetylated

Immunoreactive dynorphin in the neurointermediate pituitary of rats was found to consist of four different molecular weight forms. The three larger molecular weight forms, with apparent molecular weights of 4800, 3200, and 1700, constituted more than 80% of the total dynorphin immunoreactivity, and each liberated leucine-enkephalin but not alpha-N-acetyl-leucine-enkephalin upon enzymatic treatment with trypsin followed by carboxypeptidase B. Only a minor portion of the smallest dynorphin-related molecular weight form, dynorphin-(1-8), released alpha-N-acetyl-leucine-enkephalin upon enzymatic cleavage. This suggests that the vast majority of dynorphin-related peptides in the rat neurointermediate pituitary is not alpha-N-acetylated. The exceptionally high opiate-like activity of the molecular weight 1700 dynorphin suggests that this dynorphin-related opioid peptide may constitute the major part of opioid activity in the neurointermediate pituitary of rats.
