Charismatic megafauna have been used as icons and financial drivers of conservation efforts worldwide given that they are useful surrogates for biodiversity in general. However, tests of this premise have been constrained by data limitations, especially at large scales. Here we overcome this problem by combining large-scale citizen-sourced data with intensive expert observations of two endangered charismatic species, Blakiston’s fish owl (forest specialist) and the red-crowned crane (wetland specialist). We constructed large-scale maps of species richness for 52 forest and 23 grassland/wetland bird species using hierarchical community modeling and citizen-sourced data at 1, 2, 5, and 10-km grid resolutions. We compared the species richness of forest and grassland/wetland birds between the breeding and non-breeding sites of the two charismatic birds at each of the four spatial resolutions, and then assessed the scale dependency of the biodiversity surrogates. Regardless of the habitat amounts, owl and crane breeding sites had higher forest and grassland/wetland bird species richness, respectively. However, this surrogacy was more effective at finer scales (1–2-km resolutions), which corresponds to the charismatic species’ home range sizes (up to 9.4 ± 2.0 km2 for fish owls, and 3–4 km2 for cranes). Species richness showed the highest spatial variations at 1–2-km resolutions. We suggest that the agreement of functional scales between surrogate species and broader biodiversity is essential for successful surrogacy, and that habitat conservation and restoration targeting multiple charismatic species with different specialties can complement to biodiversity conservation. 相似文献

Alternans, a condition in which there is a beat-to-beat alternation in the electromechanical response of a periodically stimulated cardiac cell, has been linked to the genesis of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Optical mapping of membrane voltage (Vm) and intracellular calcium (Cai) on the surface of animal hearts reveals complex spatial patterns of alternans. In particular, spatially discordant alternans has been observed in which regions with a large-small-large action potential duration (APD) alternate out-of-phase adjacent to regions of small-large-small APD. However, the underlying mechanisms that lead to the initiation of discordant alternans and govern its spatiotemporal properties are not well understood. Using mathematical modeling, we show that dynamic changes in the spatial distribution of discordant alternans can be used to pinpoint the underlying mechanisms. Optical mapping of Vm and Cai in paced rabbit hearts revealed that spatially discordant alternans induced by rapid pacing exhibits properties consistent with a purely dynamical mechanism as shown in theoretical studies. Our results support the viewpoint that spatially discordant alternans in the heart can be formed via a dynamical pattern formation process which does not require tissue heterogeneity. 相似文献

It has been suggested that a suppression of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) induced by prolonged vibration is due to an attenuation of Ia afferent activity. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that aftereffects following prolonged vibration on muscle activity during MVC differ among plantar flexor synergists owing to a supposed difference in muscle fiber composition. The plantar flexion MVC torque and surface electromyogram (EMG) of the medial head of gastrocnemius (MG), the lateral head of gastrocnemius (LG), and the soleus (Sol) were recorded in 13 subjects before and after prolonged vibration applied to the Achilles tendon at 100 Hz for 30 min. The maximal H reflexes and M waves were also determined from the three muscles, and the ratio between H reflexes and M waves (H/Mmax) was calculated before and after the vibration. The MVC torque was decreased by 16.6 +/- 3.7% after the vibration (P < 0.05; ANOVA). The H/Mmax also decreased for all three muscles, indicating that Ia afferent activity was successfully attenuated by the vibration in all plantar flexors. However, a reduction of EMG during MVC was observed only in MG (12.7 +/- 4.0%) and LG (11.4 +/- 3.9%) (P < 0.05; ANOVA), not in Sol (3.4 +/- 3.0%). These results demonstrated that prolonged vibration-induced MVC suppression was attributable mainly to the reduction of muscle activity in MG and LG, both of which have a larger proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers than Sol. This finding suggests that Ia-afferent activity that reinforces the recruitment of high-threshold motor units is necessary to enhance force exertion during MVC. 相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of bed rest with or without strength training on torque fluctuations and activation strategy of the muscles. Twelve young men participated in a 20-day bed rest study. Subjects were divided into a non-training group (BRCon) and a strength-training group (BRTr). The training comprised dynamic calf-raise and leg-press exercises. Before and after bed rest, subjects performed maximal contractions and steady submaximal isometric contractions of the ankle extensor muscles and of the knee extensor muscles (2.5-10% of maximal torque). Maximal torque decreased for both the ankle extensors (9%, P < 0.05) and knee extensors (16%, P < 0.05) in BRCon but not in BRTr. For the ankle extensors, the coefficient of variation (CV) for torque increased in both groups (P < 0.05), with a greater amount (P < 0.05) in BRCon (88%) compared with BRTr (41%). For the knee extensors, an increase in the CV for torque was observed only in BRCon (22%). The increase in the CV for torque in BRCon accompanied the greater changes in electromyogram amplitude of medial gastrocnemius (122%) and vastus lateralis (59%) compared with BRTr (P < 0.05). The results indicate that fluctuations in torque during submaximal contractions of the extensor muscles in the leg increase after bed rest and that strength training counteracted the decline in performance. The tuberous stem of kohlrabi is an important quantitative trait, which affects its yield and quality. Genetic control of this trait has not yet been unveiled. To identify the QTLs controlling stem swelling of kohlrabi, a BC1 population of 92 plants was developed from a cross of broccoli DH line GCP04 and kohlrabi var. Seine. A wide range of variation in tuberous stem diameter was observed among the mapping populations. We constructed a genetic map of nine linkage groups (LGs) with different types of markers, spanning a total length of 913.5 cM with an average marker distance of 7.55 cM. Four significant QTLs for radial enlargement of kohlrabi stem, namely, REnBo1, REnBo2, REnBo3, and REnBo4 were detected on C02, C03, C05, and C09, respectively, and accounted for the phenotypic variation of 59% for the stem diameter and 55% for the qualitative grading of tuberous stem in classes. Then, we confirmed the stability of identified QTLs using BC1S1 populations derived from the BC1 plants having heterozygous alleles at the target QTL and homozygous kohlrabi alleles at the remaining QTLs. REnBo1and REnBo2 using 128 plants of BC168S1 and 94 plants of BC143S1, respectively, and REnBo3 and REnBo4 using 152 plants of BC157S1 were detected at the same positions as the respective QTLs of the BC1 population. Confirmation of QTLs in two successive generations indicates that the QTLs are persistent. The QTLs obtained in this study could be useful in marker-assisted selection of kohlrabi breeding, and to understand the genetic mechanisms of stem swelling and storage organ development in kohlrabi and other Brassica species. 相似文献
