Non-adipose body mass (NAB) is an approximate indicator of total muscle mass and body protein content. The indirect measurement of NAB in obese man is of interest because of its relationship to muscle mass and, therefore, to physical fitness. Furthermore, NAB might reflect reduced body protein in instances of suspected “metabolic obesity”.Adipose tissue mass and NAB were derived from measurements of body weight and total body water in 48 obese and 19 normally nourished women with the aid of previously determined constants for the water fractions of adipose tissue and NAB.The mean NAB was increased in 23 moderately obese patients (42.1 kg. vs. 35.2 kg. for the controls). A higher mean NAB (51.3 kg.) was found in eight grossly obese women.It was concluded that obese women have a larger than normal mean muscle mass.A height-weight table gave a grossly misleading estimate of the degree of obesity in two unusually muscular siblings.  相似文献

The rapid microtiter technique was investigated as a means of facilitating the detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin B. With this technique, many samples were assayed simultaneously, and readable results were obtained in 3 hr. Other advantages of this method, in addition to speed, were the small quantity of reactants used, ease of reading, and reproducibility.  相似文献

A 1·5 kb Eco RI– Bam HI restriction fragment from Mycobacterium tuberculosis was found to hybridize specifically with genomic DNA from M. tuberculosis -complex organisms. Primers were designed from the terminal sequences of this fragment and used to amplify uniquely M. tuberculosis -group DNA in a polymerase chain reaction. It is suggested that a combination of these primers and probe will prove a useful tool for the early diagnosis of tuberculous infections.  相似文献

Crustose red algae induce substratum-specific settlement, attachment and metamorphosis of the planktonic larvae of Haliotis rufescens Swainson (gastropod mollusc), upon direct contact by the larvae with any of a number of algal species tested. Larvae are not induced by contact with intact foliose red, brown or green macroalgae. Geniculate red algae are only slightly active. Larval settlement and metamorphosis are shown to be triggered by a class of chemical inducers associated with macromolecules and found in extracts of all species of crustose, geniculate, and foliose red algae tested; these inducers are not found in extracts of brown or green macroalgae. The substratum specificity of larval settlement and metamorphosis is shown to result from the unique availability of these inducers at the surfaces of the crustose red algae. Using a newly-developed improved method of purification based upon size-separation by gel-filtration, followed by ion-exchange chromatography over a diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-acrylamide matrix, the principal inducer of Haliotis larval settlement and metamorphosis has been resolved from the red algal phycobiliproteins. Sensitivity of this inducer to reduction in molecular weight by digestion with trypsin demonstrates that this inducer is associated with protein.  相似文献

Distribution of 5-doxylstearic acid in the membranes of mammalian cells   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Concentration-dependent spin broadening of ESR spectra of the nitroxide 5-doxylstearic acid has been used to evaluate the distribution of 5-doxylstearic acid in the membranes of intact mouse thymus-bone marrow (TB) and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. TB cells, CHO cells, erythrocytes, and isolated plasma membranes from CHO cells were labelled with 5-doxylstearic acid and the peak to peak linewidths of the central line of the resulting ESR spectra were measured. The measured line widths were linearly dependent on the amount of 5-doxylstearic acid incorporated into the sample over the range of 0-0.18 mol nitroxide per mol lipid. In erythrocytes, the relationship between linewidths approximated a linear function at lower concentrations of 5-doxylstearic acid, up to 0.07 mol nitroxide per mol lipid. The amount of broadening of the central line for a given amount of 5-doxylstearic acid was far less for intact cells than for either erythrocytes or plasma membrane, indicating that the 5-doxylstearic acid samples a much larger lipid pool in the intact cells. With the broad assumption that the mobility of the 5-doxylstearic acid is similar in different membranes, the size of the lipid pool sampled by 5-doxylstearic acid is approximately equal to the total cellular lipid in intact cells. If a given concentration of 5-doxylstearic acid sampled only the plasma membrane of TB or CHO cells, we would expect to see a linewidth corresponding to a 12-20-fold greater local concentration of 5-doxylstearic acid than was observed, since the plasma membranes of CHO and TB cells represent only 5-8 percent of the total cellular lipid. Therefore, the 5-doxylstearic acid must distribute into most or all cellular membranes of intact cells and is not localized in the plasma membrane alone.  相似文献

We describe a new, electronic, apparatus for measuring the activity of bumblebees as they fly from and to their nests. The bee activity recorder (BAR) works on the principle that bees leaving and returning to their nest crawl through a tube equipped with infrared emitters and detectors so that when the beam is interrupted by the passage of a bee, the event is recorded as either an exit or an entry. Tests of BARs indicate that they are highly accurate, BAR counts and visual counts highly correlated with an almost one‐to‐one correspondence. We suggest that BARs can be used for recording the foraging activities of bumblebees through nest exit and entry counts in many practical and research applications.  相似文献

BALB/c mice were injected with 0.1 ml of antithymocyte serum (ATS) and tested at various times thereafter for graft-versus-host (GVH) reactivity of lymph node cells (LNC) and spleen cells (SC). Splenomegaly produced by LNC or SC injected alone was used as a measure of precursor T cell function and the capacity of such cells to produce synergy when combined with normal thymocytes was used to evaluate amplifier T cell activity. In lymph node, both precursor and amplifier function were strikingly depressed 2 days after ATS administration; by day 11, precursor function showed slight recovery while amplifier activity had recovered to supranormal levels. In spleen, precursor activity recovered two fold between 2 and 11 days after ATS inoculation but no amplifier activity could be detected at day 11. Since donors had not been deliberately stimulated with alloantigens prior to testing of LN and SC GVH acivity, these studies demonstrate (a) that precursors and amplifiers are disinct T cell populations that are committed to express unique functional activities before antigen exposure and (b) that, following depletion with ATS, these two populations recover independently at different rates in separate lymphoid compartments.  相似文献
