Summary Electron microscopic studies of the carotid body of the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) have shown Type I and Type II cells combined with axons into compact groups. The many Type I cells in the depths of the organ had a body, containing the nucleus, and an elongated, flared process. Some of the Type I cells in the superficial regions tended to be spindle-shaped. Type I cells were characterised by membrane-bound, dense-cored vesicles about 120 nm in diameter. Type II cells invested the Type I cells and had axons embedded in them as in Schwann cells.The fine structure of the carotid body in the domestic fowl resembles that of the Lovebird (Uroloncha domestica) and of various amphibia and mammals. The possibility is discussed that the Type I cells may have a chemoreceptor or a general secretory function, or even both pathway for functions together. The main role of the Type II cells seems to be to provide a of these axons leading to or from Type I cells.The authors are grateful to Mr. R. P. The incubation of linoleic acid with cells causes profound effects on membrane associated phenomenon. Using the fluorescent probe diphenyl hexatriene (DPH) to monitor lipid changes in the microenvironment of the cell surface, we find that linoleic acid reduces the polarization values (P) in mouse lymphocytes and BHK cells. Measurements on lipids extracted from the cells grown in linoleic acid produce similar results. We also find in the mouse lymphocyte that capping of Ig is inhibited and con A stimulated mitogenesis is unaffected. In contrast to the latter effect, LPS and PHA stimulated mitogenesis is inhibited and in the rat lymph node, con A stimulated mitogenesis, greatly enhanced. We also show that linoleic acid alters the binding of antibodies to the cell surface of EL-4 lymphoma cells. These observations suggest that linoleic acid alters cellular function by interfering with protein/lipid interactions within the surface membrane.  相似文献

Adult respiratory distress syndrome occurred in a patient who had received dextran as a routine antithrombotic agent during and after free TRAM breast reconstruction. Although most patients who receive dextran have no adverse reaction, particularly after hapten inhibition by dextran 1 infusion, the serious nature of this complication in an elective operation calls into question the continuing routine use of dextran in microsurgery.  相似文献

Nonlinear regression is used to fit the omega function vs. protein concentration curves (first described by B.K. Milthorpe, P.D. Jeffrey and L.W. Nichol, Biophys. Chem. 3 (1975) 169) obtained from sedimentation equilibrium experiments on self-associating macromolecules. Nonlinear regression allows the direct fit of these curves with discrete or indefinite self-association reaction models in order to obtain values for the equilibrium constants and second virial coefficient. The method is independent of the choice of reference concentration and avoids the original method of extrapolating an omega function curve to zero concentration and then using the extrapolated value to construct a monomer activity curve used for analysis. This extrapolation can become very difficult for mild to strong self-associations where incorrectly extrapolated values lead to systematic error in the monomer activity curves. The method is applied to results from a mild, indefinite self-association, exemplified by the self-association of human spectrin, and to computer-simulated data of weak, mild and strong, indefinite self-associations.  相似文献

Serum lipoproteins were measured by ultracentrifugal means in rats bearing hepatomas of different degrees of malignancy (Morris hepatomas 16, 5123TC and 7777) to determine the effect of these hepatomas on serum lipoprotein levels. Serum lipoprotein patterns were altered, especially in rats bearing hepatomas 16 and 7777, which had elevated high-density lipoproteins. (They were not elevated in serum of rats bearing hepatoma 5123TC). This increase in high-density lipoproteins seems to be specific for chemically induced hepatomas since HDL2 is usually decreased in humans and animals with types of cancer not involving the liver. It appears that hepatomas can synthesize lipoproteins, and the serum levels of the host rats are altered depending on the hepatoma. Different biochemistries appear to be associated with each hepatoma. Cholesterol and fatty acid levels of unfractionated serum and of isolated lipoproteins also indicate abnormal lipid/lipoprotein metabolism associated with these hepatomas.  相似文献
