The Maloti minnow Pseudobarbus quathlambae (Barnard, 1938) is not extinct in South Africa

Despite concerted surveys, the Maloti minnow Pseudobarbus quathlambae (Barnard 1938) had not been recorded in South African waters for almost eighty years since the original collections were made at the type locality in the upper uMkhomazana River in 1938. The species was therefore declared extinct in South Africa, whereas extant populations were considered confined to various rivers in the Lesotho highlands. In April 2017, however, this species was rediscovered in the Mzimkhulu River system in KwaZulu-Natal. The rediscovery of a species that was considered locally extinct supports the need for extensive surveys to determine its distribution range, estimate population sizes, assess conservation status and implement effective strategies to ensure its continued existence in KwaZulu-Natal.     

Copper(I) transfer into apo-stellacyanin using copper(I)-thiourea as a copper-thionein model.

The direct incorporation of Cu(I) from [Cu(I)(thiourea)3]Cl, a structural analogue of Cu-thionein, into apo-stellacyanin, was successful both aerobically and anaerobically. A characteristic c.d. band of Cu(I)-stellacyanin at 270 nm (0 = -12.5 X 10(3) degrees X cm2 X dmol-1) was seen. On oxidation with hexacyanoferrate(III) or by air, the correct Cu(II) binding into the active centre of this 'Type 1' Cu-protein was deduced from chiroptical measurements which were supported by e.p.r. data. Thus Cu-thiourea turned out to be an excellent Cu(I)-donor in aqueous systems for the complete reconstitution of mononuclear Blue copper proteins.     

The uvsC and uvsE genes of Aspergillus nidulans are not required for the mutagenic repair of UV damage

The uvsC gene of Aspergillus nidulans is a homolog of the RAD51 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, with respect to its effects on UV mutagenesis, it differs from the yeast gene, since it seems to be required for UV mutagenesis; however, this conclusion is based only on data from resting conidia. To further clarify the functional role of the uvsC gene, we tested the UV mutability of strains bearing a uvsC mutation in resting as well as in germinating conidia, by the p-fluoro-phenyl-alanine resistance test. We also evaluated the mutability of the uvsE mutant which belongs to the same epistatic group. Our results show that the uvsC and uvsE genes do not have a significant role in the mutagenic UV-repair pathway.
