This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity and content of biliary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolities in bream Abramis brama L. and perch Perca fluviatilis L. from a region with background levels of organic xenobiotics. Statistically significant interspecific differences are revealed. The results of the study should be considered in studies on the effects of contaminants in fish. 相似文献

Phenomena accompanying the injection of a dense plasma beam from the payload of a rocket into ionospheric plasma are analyzed. The dynamics of both the quasineutral plasma beam and the beam-induced disturbances in the ionospheric plasma are investigated. It is shown that the electric field in the beam has a complicated structure, which leads to the generation of currents in both the beam and the ambient ionospheric plasma. The transverse size of the disturbance zone in the ionospheric plasma is found to greatly exceed the beam diameter. The proposed model of the current closing in the ionospheric plasma agrees well with the experimental data. The xenon beam temperature at moderate distances from the injector is determined by using the plasma shadow theory. It is found that the ion beam temperature is at least four times lower than the plasma temperature in the injection zone. This unexpected result is explained by the adiabatic cooling of the current system. The critical radius beyond which a constant temperature in the beam is established is found to be less than 11 m. 相似文献

Biological control has been attracting an increasing attention over the last two decades as an environmentally friendly alternative
to the more traditional chemical-based control. In this paper, we address robustness of the biological control strategy with
respect to fluctuations in the controlling species density. Specifically, we consider a pest being kept under control by its
predator. The predator response is assumed to be of Holling type III, which makes the system’s kinetics “excitable.” The system
is studied by means of mathematical modeling and extensive numerical simulations. We show that the system response to perturbations
in the predator density can be completely different in spatial and non-spatial systems. In the nonspatial system, an overcritical
perturbation of the population density results in a pest outbreak that will eventually decay with time, which can be regarded
as a success of the biological control strategy. However, in the spatial system, a similar perturbation can drive the system
into a self-sustained regime of spatiotemporal pattern formation with a high pest density, which is clearly a biological control
failure. We then identify the parameter range where the biological control can still be successful and describe the corresponding
regime of the system dynamics. Finally, we identify the main scenarios of the system response to the population density perturbations
and reveal the corresponding structure of the parameter space of the system.

The heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70, human HSPA1A) plays indispensable roles in cellular stress responses and protein quality control (PQC). In the framework of PQC, it cooperates with the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) to clear damaged and dysfunctional proteins in the cell. Moreover, Hsp70 itself is rapidly degraded following the recovery from stress. It was demonstrated that its fast turnover is mediated via ubiquitination and subsequent degradation by the 26S proteasome. At the same time, the effect of Hsp70 on the functional state of proteasomes has been insufficiently investigated. Here, we characterized the direct effect of recombinant Hsp70 on the activity of 20S and 26S proteasomes and studied Hsp70 degradation by the 20S proteasome in vitro. We have shown that the activity of purified 20S proteasomes is decreased following incubation with recombinant human Hsp70. On the other hand, high concentrations of Hsp70 activated 26S proteasomes. Finally, we obtained evidence that in addition to previously reported ubiquitin-dependent degradation, Hsp70 could be cleaved independent of ubiquitination by the 20S proteasome. The major proteoglycans from L6J1 rat myoblast culture were identified. The proteoglycans were isolated from different constituents
of cell culture: culture medium, extracellular matrix (ECM), and myoblasts. To identify their core proteins, the proteoglycans
were treated with enzymes specifically digesting chondroitin/dermatan sulfates or chondroitin sulfates. Subsequent electrophoresis
and mass spectrometry revealed versican, collagen XII, and inter-α-trypsin inhibitor classified as chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans
and biglycan known to be chondroitin/dermatan sulfate proteoglycan. Versican was identified in ECM and the other proteoglycans
in the culture medium. Such difference in localization is likely to be a consequence of different biological functions. Versican,
collagen XII, and biglycan are synthesized by myoblasts and inter-α-trypsin inhibitor originates from fetal bovine serum (a

The evolution of pathogen virulence in natural populations has conventionally been considered as a result of selection caused by the interactions of the host with its pathogen(s). The host population, however, is generally embedded in complex trophic interactions with other populations in the community, in particular, intensive predation on the infected host can increase its mortality, and this can affect the course of virulence evolution. Reciprocally, in the long run, the evolution of virulence within an infected host can affect the patterns of population dynamics of a predator consuming the host (e.g. resulting in large amplitude oscillations, causing a severe drop in the population size, etc.). Surprisingly, neither the effect of predation on the evolution of virulence within a host, nor the influence of the evolution of virulence upon the consumer's dynamics has been addressed in the literature yet. In this paper, we consider a classical S-I ecoepidemiological model in which the infected host is consumed by a predator. We are particularly interested in the evolutionarily stable virulence of the pathogen in the model and its dependence upon ecologically relevant parameters. We show that predation can prominently shift the evolutionarily stable virulence towards more severe strains as compared to the same system without predation. We demonstrate that the evolution of virulence can result in a succession of dynamical regimes and can even lead to the extinction of the predator in the long run. The presence of a predator can indirectly affect the evolution within its prey since the evolutionarily stable virulence becomes a function of the prey growth rate, which would not be the case in a predator-free system. We find that the evolutionarily stable virulence largely depends on the carrying capacity K of the prey in a non-monotonous way. The model also predicts that in an eutrophic environment the shift of virulence towards evolutionarily stable benign strains can cause demographically stochastic evolutionary suicide, resulting in the extinction of both species, thus artificially maintaining severe strains of pathogen can enhance the persistence of both species. 相似文献

Enhancing the predictive power of models in biology is a challenging issue. Among the major difficulties impeding model development and implementation are the sensitivity of outcomes to variations in model parameters, the problem of choosing of particular expressions for the parametrization of functional relations, and difficulties in validating models using laboratory data and/or field observations. In this paper, we revisit the phenomenon which is referred to as structural sensitivity of a model. Structural sensitivity arises as a result of the interplay between sensitivity of model outcomes to variations in parameters and sensitivity to the choice of model functions, and this can be somewhat of a bottleneck in improving the models predictive power. We provide a rigorous definition of structural sensitivity and we show how we can quantify the degree of sensitivity of a model based on the Hausdorff distance concept. We propose a simple semi-analytical test of structural sensitivity in an ODE modeling framework. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of directly linking the variability of field/experimental data and model predictions, and we demonstrate a way of assessing the robustness of modeling predictions with respect to data sampling variability. As an insightful illustrative example, we test our sensitivity analysis methods on a chemostat predator-prey model, where we use laboratory data on the feeding of protozoa to parameterize the predator functional response. 相似文献

A one-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the atom, ion, and electron dynamics in the channel of a stationary plasma thruster is developed. The relevant set of integrodifferential equations is derived and investigated both analytically (steady-state solutions) and numerically (dynamic regimes). It is shown that adjusting only one parameter (the channel resistivity) makes it possible to achieve a good agreement between the calculated global parameters and experimental data. The general features of oscillations revealed with the help of the model are also found to agree fairly well with the experiment. 相似文献
