Time spent on subsistence activities was compared between rural sedentes and urban migrants of the Huli population in Papua New Guinea. Person-day observation data were collected for rural sedentes (441) in the Tari basin and for urban migrants in Port Moresby (175). The time spent on subsistence activities by males was longer in the urban area than in rural areas, while that by females was similar in both areas. Conspicuous gender inequality with respect to labour hours in rural areas seems to diminish when people move to urban areas, reflecting the different subsistence regime between rural and urban environments.  相似文献

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is one of a group of human inherited neurodegenerative diseases caused by polyglutamine expansion. We have previously demonstrated that the SBMA gene product, the androgen receptor protein, is toxic and aggregates when truncated. Heat shock proteins function as molecular chaperones, which recognize and renaturate misfolded protein (aggregate). We thus assessed the effect of a variety of chaperones in a cultured neuronal cell model of SBMA. Overexpression of chaperones reduces aggregate formation and suppresses apoptosis in a cultured neuronal cell model of SBMA to differing degrees depending on the chaperones and their combinations. Combination of Hsp70 and Hsp40 was the most effective among the chaperones in reducing aggregate formation and providing cellular protection, reflecting that Hsp70 and Hsp40 act together in chaperoning mutant and disabled proteins. Although Hdj2/Hsdj chaperone has been previously reported to suppress expanded polyglutamine tract-formed aggregate, Hsdj/Hdj2 showed little effect in our system. These findings indicate that chaperones may be one of the key factors in the developing of CAG repeat disease and suggested that increasing expression level or enhancing the function of chaperones will provide an avenue for the treatment of CAG repeat disease.  相似文献

Synthesis and in vitro structure-activity relationships (SARs) are outlined. The single-stranded region of the amino acid acceptor stem corresponding to the 3'-end of E. coli tRNAMetf was replaced by ligation of chemically synthesized ribooligonucleotides, in order to change the length of the single-stranded CCA terminus. The chemically synthesized ribooligomers, CCA, ACCA, AACCA and CAACCA, were ligated to nuclease-treated E. coli tRNAMetf, which lacked the ACCA sequence at the 3'-end. The methionine acceptor activities of these modified tRNAs were examined using E. coli methionyl-tRNA synthetase. Ligation of the chemically synthesized pentamer (AACCA) to the acceptor terminus restored the methionine acceptor activity, whereas ligation of the hexamer (CAACCA) or trimer (CCA) to the acceptor terminus did not Modification of the acceptor terminus had no effect on the formylation of accepted methionine.  相似文献

Based on the authors' interview survey for 608 randomly selected women of the rural Arab population in the South Ghor district of Jordan, this paper examined the effects of polygyny and consanguinity on high fertility, which was recognized as natural fertility. The prevalence of polygynous and consanguineous marriages was 28.0% and 58.1%, respectively, largely reflecting the population's traditional marriage customs. The findings highlighted a significantly higher total marital fertility rate (TMFR) in the monogamous wives (10.5) than in the senior polygynous (8.1) and junior polygynous wives (8.6); the TMFR did not significantly differ among the wives of non-consanguineous, first-cousin and second-cousin marriages. The formation of polygynous marriage was decided by the husband, mostly as a result of his senior wife's infecundity or sub-fecundity, and the age of the husband at marriage to his junior polygynous wife was high in many cases, leading to a decline in this wife's fecundity.  相似文献

Many researchers have studied the relationship between masting by trees and seed predation by insects. Most of these studies have been plant centered, with little focus on the insect perspective. To estimate the effect of mast seeding on insect seed predators, the life‐history traits of these insects must also be considered because some seed insects can survive lean years by prolonged diapause. In this study, I examined larval infestation of acorns and life‐history traits of the acorn weevil, Curculio robustus (Roelofs) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in relation to acorn production of the deciduous oak Quercus acutissima Carruthers (Fagaceae) in a coppice stand in central Japan in 2004–2009. Curculio robustus females oviposit into Q. acutissima acorns, inside which the larvae develop. Mature larvae leave acorns and burrow into the soil, where they overwinter. Although germination did occur in acorns infested by weevil larvae, the percentage of germination was lower in acorns damaged by many larvae. Acorn production in Q. acutissima varied considerably among years. Both the number of C. robustus larvae infesting acorns and the percentage of acorns infested were affected by the amount of acorns produced by Q. acutissima, and two successive lean years appeared to have a considerable impact on C. robustus population size. Consequently, only a small fraction of the acorns produced were lost to predation in a mast year after two successive lean years. However, C. robustus could survive the two successive lean years because of prolonged larval diapause, probably leading to a marked decrease in population size. These findings suggest that masting in Q. acutissima succeeds as a predator satiation strategy in response to acorn damage by C. robustus, and that C. robustus has developed prolonged diapause as a counter‐adaptation.  相似文献

They trained on a cycloergometer 3 times/wk for 16 wk(50-80%O2 max,then 80-85%O2 max). They werechecked at 8 wk, 16 wk, and 4 mo after detraining. Training improvedO2 max (+16%) andinduced plasma volume expansion (+11%). No change in total body water,extracellular fluid, interstitial and intracellular fluid volumes,fat-free mass, and body weight was detected in this small sample withtraining. Body fat mass decreased (2.1 ± 2.2 kg).Echocardiography at rest showed increased fractional shortening andejection fraction and decreased left ventricular end-systolic dimension(P < 0.05). Blood volume expansioncorrelates with cardiac contractility and has an impact on cardiacfunction. These improvements are precarious, however, and arecompletely lost after 4 mo of detraining, when elderly subjects losethe constraints and the social stimulation of the imposed protocol.

In this study, we analyzed a mitochondrial small (ms) RNA in Dictyostelium discoideum, which is 129 nucleotides long and has a GC content of only 22.5%. In the mitochondrial DNA, a single-copy gene (msr) for the ms RNA was located downstream of the gene for large-subunit rRNA. The location of msr was similar to that of the 5S rRNA gene in prokaryotes and chloroplasts, but clearly different from that in mitochondria of plants, liverwort and the chlorophycean alga Prototheca wikerhamii, in which small-subunit rRNA and 5S rRNA genes are closely linked. The primary sequence of ms RNA showed low homology with mitochondrial 5S rRNA from plants, liverwort and the chlorophycean alga, but the proposed secondary structure of ms RNA was similar to that of cytoplasmic 5S rRNA. In addition, ms RNA showed a highly conserved GAAC sequence in the same loop as in common 5S rRNA. However, ms RNA was detected mainly in the mitochondrial 25?000?×?g supernatant fraction which was devoid of ribosomes. It is possible that ms RNA is an evolutionary derivative of mitochondrial 5S rRNA.  相似文献

We synthesized six novel BBR derivatives that were designed to avoid metabolic activation via ipso-substitution and evaluated for their degree of toxicity and hURAT1 inhibition. It was found that all of the derivatives demonstrate lower cytotoxicity in mouse hepatocytes and lower levels of metabolic activation than BBR, while maintaining their inhibitory activity toward the uric acid transporter. We propose that these derivatives could serve as effective uricosuric agents that have much better safety profiles than BBR.  相似文献

Physical effects of negative air ions in a wet sauna   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
 The physical effects of negative air ions on humans were determined in an experimental sauna room equipped with an ionizer. Thirteen healthy persons took a wet sauna bath (dry bulb temperature 42° C, relative humidity 100%, 10 min exposure) with or without negative air ions. The subjects were not told when they were being exposed to negative air ions. There were no differences in the moods of these persons or changes in their blood pressures between the two saunas. The surface temperatures of the foreheads, hands, and legs in the sauna with negative ions were significantly higher than those in the sauna without ions. The pulse rates and sweat produced in the sauna with ions were singificantly higher than those in the sauna without ions.
