Data on quantities of glasseels and elvers caught at 11 stations on the western and northern coast of Europe together with abundance indices for glass eels at Den Oever, Netherlands and for larvae in the Bay of Biscay are presented covering the period 1924 to 1988. Large catches were made in the 1960's and 1970's followed by a sudden and widespread, but not universal, decline in the 1980's. Catches within years between stations showed significant correlations in some cases but not in all.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that the response of corals to temperature and pCO 2 is consistent between taxa. Juvenile massive Porites spp. and branches of P. rus from the back reef of Moorea were incubated for 1 month under combinations of temperature (29.3 °C and 25.6 °C) and pCO 2 (41.6 Pa and 81.5 Pa) at an irradiance of 599 μmol quanta m?2 s?1. Using microcosms and CO2 gas mixing technology, treatments were created in a partly nested design (tanks) with two between‐plot factors (temperature and pCO 2), and one within‐plot factor (taxon); calcification was used as a dependent variable. pCO 2 and temperature independently affected calcification, but the response differed between taxa. Massive Porites spp. was largely unaffected by the treatments, but P. rus grew 50% faster at 29.3 °C compared with 25.6 °C, and 28% slower at 81.5 Pa vs. 41.6 Pa CO2. A compilation of studies placed the present results in a broader context and tested the hypothesis that calcification for individual coral genera is independent of pH, [HCO3 ?], and [CO3 2?]. Unlike recent reviews, this analysis was restricted to studies reporting calcification in units that could be converted to nmol CaCO3 cm?2 h?1. The compilation revealed a high degree of variation in calcification as a function of pH, [HCO3 ?], and [CO3 2?], and supported three conclusions: (1) studies of the effects of ocean acidification on corals need to pay closer attention to reducing variance in experimental outcomes to achieve stronger synthetic capacity, (2) coral genera respond in dissimilar ways to pH, [HCO3 ?], and [CO3 2?], and (3) calcification of massive Porites spp. is relatively resistant to short exposures of increased pCO 2, similar to that expected within 100 y.  相似文献

The question of how a circle or line segment becomes covered when random arcs are marked off has arisen repeatedly in bioinformatics. The number of uncovered gaps is of particular interest. Approximate distributions for the number of gaps have been given in the literature, one motivation being ease of computation. Summary Mist-netted samples of forest understory birds in neotropical (Costa Rica) and temperate (Illinois) forests (during spring migration) supported certain earlier observations: the neotropical understory sample contained more species, more rare species, and more species that use resources not sufficiently available in temperate forest.During spring migration in Illinois, the number of bird species in a mist-netted sample of the community approaches (albeit temporarily) that of neotropical forests and is sometimes even equivalent. But the constitution of these samples seems to be quite different in different regions. Costa Rican samples showed greater within-habitat variability and individual recapture distances were shorter, implying a greater local patchiness of bird distributions than in Illinois in spring.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate the nature of the calcium homeostatic mechanisms in neoplastic GH3 rat pituitary cells. GH3 cells grown and maintained in Ham's F10 culture medium contained 35 nmoles calcium/mg cell protein. When stimulated by thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) or elevated K+ concentrations, only the latter caused cell calcium levels to rise although both resulted in hormone release. When exposed to EGTA, the GH3 cells lost calcium. When the temperature was lowered to 4 degrees C, the cells gained calcium and when rewarmed were able to extrude the previously accumulated calcium. The increased cell calcium following cold exposure could be blocked by prior treatment with rotenone. If rotenone was added subsequent to the cold exposure, it did not block the extrusion seen upon rewarming. In the absence of glucose in the medium, the GH3 cells took up more calcium upon exposure to 4 degrees C, and upon rewarming the cells could not return to their previous low levels. There are thus significant differences in calcium homeostasis between the neoplastic GH3 cells and their normal pituitary counterparts. When intracellular calcium was localized with the potassium pyroantimonate technique, there was calcium found in/on mitochondria, membrane bound vesicles and plasma membrane. Nuclear staining was sparse, and nucleolar staining was virtually absent. Upon stimulation with TRH, there was a decrease in mitochondrial calcium along with increases in both plasma membrane and nucleolar calcium levels. Since total calcium is unchanged, this indicates a significant calcium redistribution in response to TRH. The increased nucleolar calcium may reflect a calcium dependent increase in mRNA synthesis as has been reported. Since TRH presumably acts at a surface receptor, the increased plasma membrane calcium might be functionally related to receptor activation.  相似文献
