In pelagic species inhabiting large oceans, genetic differentiation tends to be mild and populations devoid of structure. However, large cetaceans have provided many examples of structuring. Here we investigate whether the sperm whale, a pelagic species with large population sizes and reputedly highly mobile, shows indication of structuring in the eastern North Atlantic, an ocean basin in which a single population is believed to occur. To do so, we examined stable isotope values in sequential growth layer groups of teeth from individuals sampled in Denmark and NW Spain. In each layer we measured oxygen- isotope ratios (δ18O) in the inorganic component (hydroxyapatite), and nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios (δ15N: δ13C) in the organic component (primarily collagenous). We found significant differences between Denmark and NW Spain in δ15N and δ18O values in the layer deposited at age 3, considered to be the one best representing the baseline of the breeding ground, in δ15N, δ13C and δ18O values in the period up to age 20, and in the ontogenetic variation of δ15N and δ18O values. These differences evidence that diet composition, use of habitat and/or migratory destinations are dissimilar between whales from the two regions and suggest that the North Atlantic population of sperm whales is more structured than traditionally accepted. 相似文献

Background
Nocardia sp. causes a variety of clinical presentations. The incidence of nocardiosis varies geographically according to several factors, such as the prevalence of HIV infections, transplants, neoplastic and rheumatic diseases, as well as climate, socio-economic conditions and laboratory procedures for Nocardia detection and identification. In Brazil the paucity of clinical reports of Nocardia infections suggests that this genus may be underestimated as a cause of human diseases and/or either neglected or misidentified in laboratory specimens. Accurate identification of Nocardia species has become increasingly important for clinical and epidemiological investigations. In this study, seven clinical Nocardia isolates were identified by multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) and their antimicrobial susceptibility was also determined. Most Nocardia isolates were associated to pulmonary disease.Methodology/Principal Findings
The majority of Brazilian human isolates in cases reported in literature were identified as Nocardia sp. Molecular characterization was used for species identification of Nocardia nova, Nocardia cyriacigeorgica, Nocardia asiatica and Nocardia exalbida/gamkensis. Data indicated that molecular analysis provided a different Nocardia speciation than the initial biochemical identification for most Brazilian isolates. All Nocardia isolates showed susceptibility to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, the antimicrobial of choice in the treatment nocardiosis. N. nova isolated from different clinical specimens from one patient showed identical antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and two distinct clones.Conclusions/Significance
Although Brazil is the world''s fifth-largest country in terms of land mass and population, pulmonary, extrapulmonary and systemic forms of nocardiosis were reported in only 6 of the 26 Brazilian states from 1970 to 2013. A least 33.8% of these 46 cases of nocardiosis proved fatal. Interestingly, coinfection by two clones may occur in patients presenting nocardiosis. Nocardia infection may be more common throughout the Brazilian territory and in other developing tropical countries than is currently recognized and MLSA should be used more extensively as an effective method for Nocardia identification. 相似文献23.

Parasite findings in sambaquis (shell mounds) are scarce. Although the 121 shell mound samples were previously analysed in our laboratory, we only recently obtained the first positive results. In the sambaqui of Guapi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, paleoparasitological analysis was performed on sediment samples collected from various archaeological layers, including the superficial layer as a control. Eggs of Acanthocephala, Ascaridoidea and Heterakoidea were found in the archaeological layers. We applied various techniques and concluded that Lutz''s spontaneous sedimentation technique is effective for concentrating parasite eggs in sambaqui soil for microscopic analysis. 相似文献

Araucaria angustifolia is a critically endangered tall tree species of valuable wood, and field observations led to the suggestion that limitations
imposed to the vertical growth of its tap root system greatly restrict the height of mature individuals. However, experimental
studies dealing with the effects of soil depth on the species growth are mostly lacking. This study evaluated and compared
the growth responses of young plants of A. angustifolia to distinct rooting depths but same soil volumes. Seeds were planted in pots of different heights and diameters, all containing
3 liters of soil mixture. Plants were submitted to four available rooting depths: 65 (T1), 35 (T2), 20 (T3), and 10 (T4) cm.
There were eight experimental units in each treatment, arranged in a randomized complete block design, each block containing
two units per treatment. Contrary to what was expected, the T3 and T4 plants had accumulated more mass and attained the same
height as the other two groups, after a 10-month growth period in a green house. Those plants also had thicker stems, longer
shoot branches, and thicker and longer lateral roots, which were interpreted as compensatory responses to increase plant anchorage
and stability. The inverse relationship between rooting depth and plant mass was attributed to a down-regulation of shoot
growth because or restricted lateral space and/or poor soil aeration of the longer and narrower pots. This experiment allowed
us to demonstrate that is not the possibility of the tap root to grow deep into the soil that ensures a better growth to plants
of A. angustifolia: provided that the offer of soil volume and resources are the same, the vertical extension of the tap root does not result
in greater growth of the plants. In fact, much greater growth impairment is expected from lateral than from vertical restriction
to root growth. 相似文献

The present study aimed at evaluating the role of captive scarlet ibises (Eudocimus ruber) and their environment as reservoirs of Aeromonas spp. and Plesiomonas spp., and analyzing the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence of the recovered bacterial isolates. Thus, non-lactose and weak-lactose fermenting, oxidase positive Gram-negative bacilli were recovered from cloacal samples (n = 30) of scarlet ibises kept in a conservational facility and from water samples (n = 30) from their environment. Then, the antimicrobial susceptibility, hemolytic activity and biofilm production of the recovered Aeromonas spp. and Plesiomonas shigelloides strains were assessed. In addition, the virulence-associated genes of Aeromonas spp. were detected. Ten Aeromonas veronii bv. sobria, 2 Aeromonas hydrophila complex and 10 P. shigelloides were recovered. Intermediate susceptibility to piperacillin-tazobactam and cefepime was observed in 2 Aeromonas spp. and 1 P. shigelloides, respectively, and resistance to gentamicin was observed in 4 P. shigelloides. The automated susceptibility analysis revealed resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem among Aeromonas spp. and intermediate susceptibility to gentamicin among P. shigelloides. All Aeromonas isolates presented hemolytic activity, while 3 P. shigelloides were non-hemolytic. All Aeromonas spp. and 3/10 P. shigelloides were biofilm-producers, at 28 °C, while 10 Aeromonas spp. and 6/10 P. shigelloides produced biofilms, at 37 °C. The most prevalent virulence genes of Aeromonas spp. were asa1 and ascV. Scarlet ibises and their environment harbour potentially pathogenic bacteria, thus requiring monitoring and measures to prevent contamination of humans and other animals. 相似文献

Hyperglycemia- and oxidative stress-induced modification of circulating lipoproteins is being increasingly recognized as an important pathogenetic factor for diabetic cardiovascular damages. This study was designed to investigate the impact of modified very low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein on phagocyte adhesion to endothelial cells and the involvement of scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-BI) in this process. Native lipoproteins were isolated by density gradient ultracentrifugation and in vitro glycoxidative or oxidative modification was performed in the presence of glucose or sodium hypochlorite, respectively. One hour co-incubation experiments with lipoproteins, freshly prepared polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), and venous endothelial cells (HUVEC) were performed in the presence or absence of different scavenger receptors and signal transduction inhibitors. PMN adhesion to HUVEC was quantified fluorimetrically. We demonstrated that oxidized and glycoxidized lipoproteins promote adhesion of PMN to HUVEC from 1.5- to 2.5-fold with oxidized lipoproteins having the greatest effect. Treatment with the highly specific SR-BI inhibitor, BLT-1 produced substantial reduction of lipoprotein-induced adhesion to endothelial cells. Native and modified lipoproteins recruited extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK 1/2), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and Janus kinase 2 as downstream signaling pathways for adhesion. From this study, it could be concluded that modification of lipoproteins plays a crucial role in atherosclerotic progression and SR-BI may be considered as a potential therapeutic target for the prevention of diabetic cardiovascular complications. 相似文献

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease that causes pain and gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage. In this study, MIA‐induced OA knee model was used in rats to test the effects of the photobiomodulation therapy (PBM). We analyzed the inflammatory process (pain and cytokine levels), and its influence on the oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity. Knee OA was induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) intra‐articular injection (1.5 mg/50 μL) and the rats were treated with eight sessions of PBM 3 days/week (904 nm, 6 or 18 J/cm2). For each animal, mechanical and cold hyperalgesia and spontaneous pain were evaluated; biological analyses were performed in blood serum, intra‐articular lavage, knee structures, spinal cord and brainstem. Cytokine assays were performed in knee, spinal cord and brainstem samples. The effects of the 18 J/cm2 dose of PBM were promising in reducing pain and neutrophil activity in knee samples, together with reducing oxidative stress damage in blood serum and spinal cord samples. PBM improved the antioxidant capacity in blood serum and brainstem, and decreased the knee pro‐inflammatory cytokine levels. Our study demonstrated that PBM decreased oxidative damage, inflammation and pain. Therefore, this therapy could be an important tool in the treatment of knee OA. 相似文献
