Summary The mycelium of BasidiomycetesPleurotus ostreatus was grown in liquid cultures of malt broth enriched with increasing amounts of cadmium also in the presence of copper and glutathione. Cadmium, up to 150 g/ml gradually inhibited mycelial development but never blocked it completely. Cadmium accumulated to a higher degree (20 mg/g dry wt) when administered alone and was mostly bound (80%) to hyphal cell walls. A large body of research demonstrated that individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from various neuropsychological deficits. In contrast, less is known and only divergent evidence exists on perceptual functions of individuals with ADHD. This is problematic as neuropsychological and perceptual functions are closely interrelated and are often difficult to disentangle in behavioral assessments. This study presents the conduct and results of a systematic literature review on perceptual functions in children and adults with ADHD. This review considers studies using psychophysical methods (objective measurements) and self- and informant reports (subjective measurements). Results indicate that individuals with ADHD have altered perceptual functions in various domains as compared to typically developing individuals. Increased perceptual functions in individuals with ADHD were found with regard to olfactory detection thresholds, whereas reduced perceptual functions were evident for aspects of visual and speech perception. Moreover, individuals with ADHD were found to experience discomfort to sensory stimuli at a lower level than typically developing individuals. Alterations of perceptual functions in individuals with ADHD were shown to be moderated by various factors, such as pharmacological treatment, cognitive functions, and symptom severity. Ultrasonic tanks were evaluated for their ability to remove viable microorganisms from various surfaces for subsequent enumeration. Test surfaces were polished stainless steel, smooth glass, frosted glass, and electronic components. The position of contaminated surfaces in relation to the ultrasonic energy source, distance of the ultrasonic source from the test surfaces, and temperature of the rinse fluid were some of the factors which influenced recovery. Experimental systems included both naturally occurring microbial contamination and artificial contamination with spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger. The results showed that ultrasonic energy was more reliable and efficient than mechanical agitation for recovering surface contaminants. Conditions which increased the number and percentage of microorganisms recovered by ultrasonic energy were: using a cold rinse fluid, placing the sample bottle on the bottom of the ultrasonic tank, and facing the contaminated surfaces toward the energy source. The North Atlantic fin whale was subject to heavy exploitation in the past and, despite partial recovery, it is still considered endangered. Recent research has questioned its currently accepted subpopulation structure and migratory movements, challenging management and conservation efforts. Here we contribute to this discussion by presenting results of stable isotope analysis of fin whale bones and krill samples collected from fin whale stomachs from two exploited areas, west Iceland and northwest Spain, and comparing these results with North Atlantic isoscapes. In krill, δ15N values were highly variable and no significant differences in δ15N and δ13C between areas emerged. δ15N and δ13C values in bone were higher than in krill, due to trophic enrichment, and were not significantly different between areas. Both krill and bone results were slightly inconsistent with the local isoscapes, maybe due to seasonal variations in local productivity and in krill diet and, in the case of bone, to its capability to integrate long‐term isotopic values, derived from food consumed in distant areas. Conversely, δ18O values, which reflect the basal signal of sea water, were consistent with isoscapes and significantly higher in whales from northwestern Spain, possibly indicating migration to breeding grounds located at lower latitudes. 相似文献

The stimulatory effects of an infusion of amino acids on glomerular filtration rate has previously been used to measure renal functional reserve and detect glomerular hyperfiltration. Thirty four patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension and seemingly normal renal function and 22 healthy controls were given infusions of amino acids to investigate whether renal functional reserve is reduced in essential hypertension and to detect patients at risk of renal damage. Although basal creatinine clearance increased after the infusion of amino acids in the controls (mean 27·9 ml/min; 95% confidence interval 18·2 to 37·6), the overall change was lower in the patients (mean 13·4 ml/min; 8·3 to 18·5), 11 of the 34 showing no increase at all. In these 11 non-responders the mean systolic blood pressure was higher than that in the 23 others (178·5 mm Hg v 157 mm Hg, respectively). Mean urinary albumin excretion was abnormal in the patients (93·3 mg/24 h; 44·2 to 142·4); eight of the 11 non-responders had an albumin excretion above the normal range (>20 mg/24 h). In the 11 patients without renal functional reserve a positive correlation was found between basal creatinine clearance and albumin excretion (r=0·695).As consumed renal reserve and albuminuria are markers of glomerular hyperfiltration studying renal function before and after infusion of amino acids can detect hypertensive patients at risk of progressive renal damage. 相似文献

The direct catalytic α‐amidoalkylation of dihydroquinolines with aldehydes bearing oxygen functionalities at different positions in a Mannich‐type reaction has been studied. β‐Alkoxy‐aldehyde 1d gave high enantioselectivity, albeit with an inherently poor diastereoselectivity, while the use of α‐alkoxy aldehydes 1c was detrimental also to enantioselectivity. Mannich‐type reactions have been studied for the first time using new chiral carbohydrate‐derived aldehydes 1a,b showing a reactivity markedly influenced by the presence of water. The chiral glycidic backbone showed a slight but significant influence on the overall stereochemical outcome only when present in α‐position of the aldehyde. The absolute stereochemistry of the products was studied by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra and compared with theoretical calculations. ECD analysis easily provides the absolute configuration of 1,2‐dihydroquinoline derivatives such as quinoline‐1(2H)‐carboxylates. 相似文献
