Moulting hormone levels for all stages of the life cycle of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, have been determined using gas chromatography with electron capture detection of the trimethylsilylated hormones. During larval development, the major hormone detected is 20-hydroxyecdysone with smaller quantities of ecdysone present. In mature adult females the major ecdysteroid observed is a polar conjugate of ecdysone, with smaller quantities of conjugated 20-hydroxyecdysone also present. During embryonic development the pattern changes from a high proportion of conjugated ecdysone in the early stages to give more free hormone and a higher proportion of 20-hydroxyecdysone in later stages. The highest titre of 20-hydroxyecdysone found in this insect is during the 5th larval instar. Maximal levels of ecdysteroid per insect are found in mature females just before oviposition, while the highest level of ecdysteroid per g of tissue is found in the eggs. 相似文献

Results of a 16‐month study of forest elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis Matschie) group size and composition, coastal use and frugivory are presented from the Réserve de Faune du Petit Loango, Gabon (now the Parc National de Loango). Mean forest elephant group size was 2.2 (n = 140) including solitary animals, and 3.1 excluding solitaries. Elephants consumed fruits of at least 49 species, and of the 220 elephant dungpiles examined, 185 (84.1%) contained seeds and 203 (92.3%) contained the remains of fruits (seeds and/or pulp). The mean number of seed species per dungpile (±SD) was 2.01 ± 1.49, and the mean number of fruit species was 2.28 ± 1.43. Elephants used the coastal habitat more during warmer months, and during the afternoon than the morning. It is hypothesized that coastal habitat use is related to sodium intake through consumption of salt‐coated vegetation. 相似文献

Prolonged increases in fetal lung expansion stimulate fetal lung growth and development, but the effects on pulmonary hemodynamics are unknown. Our aim was to determine the effect of increased fetal lung expansion, induced by tracheal obstruction (TO), on pulmonary blood flow (PBF) and vascular resistance (PVR). Chronically catheterized fetal sheep (n = 6) underwent TO from 120 to 127 days of gestational age (term approximately 147 days); tracheas were not obstructed in control fetuses (n = 6). PBF, PVR, and changes to the PBF waveform were determined. TO significantly increased lung wet weight compared with control (166.3 +/- 20.2 vs. 102.0 +/- 18.8 g; P < 0.05). Despite the increase in intraluminal pressure caused by TO (5.0 +/- 0.9 vs. 2.4 +/- 1.0 mmHg; P < 0.001), PBF and PVR were similar between groups after 7 days (TO 28.1 +/- 3.2 vs. control 34.1 +/- 10.0 ml.min(-1).100 g lung wt(-1)). However, TO markedly altered pulmonary hemodynamics associated with accentuated fetal breathing movements, causing a reduction rather than an increase in PBF at 7 days of TO. To account for the increase in intraluminal pressure, the pressure was equalized by draining the lungs of liquid on day 7 of TO. Pressure equalization increased PBF from 36.8 +/- 5.2 to 112.4 +/- 22.8 ml/min (P = 0.01) and markedly altered the PBF waveform. These studies provide further evidence to indicate that intraluminal pressure is an important determinant of PBF and PVR in the fetus. We suggest that the increase in PBF associated with pressure equalization following TO reflects an increase in growth of the pulmonary vascular bed, leading to an increase in its cross-sectional area. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar juveniles were fed either fishmeal-based diets (FM) or diets in which soybean meal (SBM) partly replaced the FM from first feeding on. The fish were kept at continuous daylight during the juvenile stage. During the last 3 weeks before reaching 100 g body mass, all fish were subjected to 12L:12D. Starting at 100 g body mass, groups of 60 fish from each feeding background were subjected to continuous light for 12 weeks (short winter), or a square-wave photoperiod cycle to stimulate parr to smolt transformation with 8L:16D during the first 6 weeks, and then continuous light during the last 6 weeks (long winter). After the 12 weeks, 20 fish from each treatment were subjected to 0, 24 or 96 h seawater exposure at a water salinity of 34. Hypo-osmoregulatory ability at seawater exposure was assessed by mortality, intestinal pathology, plasma ion concentrations and osmolality, gill Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity and element concentrations in the cytoplasm of distal intestinal enterocytes using X-ray microanalysis. The hypo-osmoregulatory capacity was higher in fish kept at short winter than at long winter, apparently due to more rapid development of gill Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity. Fish fed SBM suffered typical soybean meal-induced histological alterations of the distal intestine and apparent reductions in digestive function in the more proximal gastrointestinal regions. The net osmoregulatory capacity of these fish was maintained, as indicated by higher gill Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity and lower plasma Na+ , Ca2+ and osmolality compared to the FM-fed fish. Thus, feeding SBM did not impair the hypo-osmoregulatory ability of the Atlantic salmon following seawater exposure. 相似文献

Pyrethroid resistance has been demonstrated in populations of Anopheles funestus from South Africa and southern Mozambique. Resistance is associated with elevated P450 monooxygenase enzymes. In this study, degenerate primers based on conserved regions of Anopheles gambiae P450 CYP4, 6 and 9 families were used to amplify genomic and cDNA templates from A. funestus. A total of 12 CYP4, 12 CYP6 and 7 CYP9 partial genes have been isolated and sequenced. BLAST results revealed that A. funestus P450s generally have a high sequence identity to A. gambiae with above 75% identity at the amino acid level. The exception is CYP9J14. The A. gambiae P450 showing highest identity to CYP9J14 exhibits only 55% identity suggesting that CYP9J14 may have arisen from a recent duplication event. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on amino acid sequences also supported this hypothesis. Intron positions, but not size, were highly conserved between the two species. The high level of orthology that exists in the P450 gene families of these two species may facilitate the prediction of individual P450 protein function. 相似文献
