Many animals must often respond to environmental patterns that simulatneously influence both foraging efficiency and predation risk. We noted that grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) sometimes immediately consume food items in areas of relatively great exposure to predators, and at other times carry food items to the safety of a tree prior to consumption. We outlined a hypothesis that the squirrels were somehow trading-off energy intake rate against predation risk. A simple model shows that maximal energetic efficiency is associated with immediate consumption, whereas (under the field conditions studied) carrying items to the safety of trees provides for minimal exposure to predation. Our analysis of the model predicts that the tendency to carry a food item should decrease with distance of food from cover (travel time) and increase with item size (handling time). To test our predictions, we presented free-roaming grey squirrels with patches containing a fixed number of identical food items. We estimated the proportion of items carried to trees before consumption for 12 different combinations of distance to the nearest tree and item size. The results support our hypothesis and indicate that a simple behavioural criterion based solely on foraging rate or time exposed to predators is insufficient to explain the variation in the data. 相似文献

A rapid and simple method for the purification of amastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi from spleens of infected mice is described. A protein A-Scpharose 4B immunoadsorbent column bound with antisera to epimastigotes of T. cruzi was used to purify the tissue forms of this parasite. Host cells and debris are not retained, and parasites can be eluted in high yields and purity. Studies of surface glycoproteins and glycolipids of the purified amastigotes with 18 lectins of various specificities revealed the presence on the parasites of receptors for N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine, D-galactose, and D-mannose binding lectins. 相似文献

The chromosomal location of the active NORs has been analyzed by a silver impregnation procedure in theSteropleurus martorelli complex. A primary NOR, which is always present at the first meiotic prophase, has been found in each of the four described races. In addition to this, all races possess one or two secondary NORs which are less active than the former and can be occasionally shown. Role of progesterone on oocyte maturation in the egg-brooding hylid frog Gastrotheca riobambae (Fowler) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the egg-brooding frog Gastrotheca riobambae (Fowler), oocyte maturation is comparable to the situation of other frog species. In isolated follicles, progesterone induces only germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), while human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) induces GVBD and ovulation. In addition, defolliculated oocytes respond with GVBD to the treatment with progesterone, while hCG has no effect. As in other frogs, oocyte maturation in vitro depends on hormonal action and on the presence of divalent cations. In this frog, progesterone or a similar hormone conditions the brooding pouch for reproduction and induces pouch closure. Follicles from frogs with closed pouches showed GVBD after 15-17 hours of incubation with progesterone, while those from frogs with open pouches took 19-24 hours for GVBD. These findings suggest that follicles become stimulated for maturation when the pouch is closed and that this stimulated condition is maintained for several weeks in advance of the process of oocyte maturation. The variations of the talar articular facets in 176 calcanei were studied and classified. Three types were considered: type A = calcanei with two articular facets for the talar head, with four subtypes; type B = calcanei with one articular facet for the talar head, and two subtypes, and type C = unique articular facies in the superior surface of the calcaneus for the talus. We found 53% (94 cases) type B calcanei and 46% (82 cases) type A calcanei. No calcanei of type C were seen. 相似文献

The fusion of viruses with cells and liposomes is reviewed with focus on the analysis of the final extents and kinetics of
fusion.Influenza virus andSendai virus exhibit 100% of fusion capacity with cells at pH 5 and pH 7.5, respectively. On the other hand, there may be in certain
cases, a limit on the number of virions that can fuse with a single cell, that is significantly below the limit on binding.
It still remains to be resolved whether this limit reflects a limited number of possible fusion sites, or a saturation limit
on the amount of viral glycoproteins that can be incorporated in the cellular membrane, like the case of virus fusion with
pure phospholipid vesicles, in which the fusion products were shown to consist of a single virus and several liposomes. Both
viruses demonstrate incomplete fusion activity towards liposomes of a variety of compositions. In the case ofSendai virus, fusion inactive virions bind essentially irreversibly to liposomes. Yet, preliminary results revealed that such bound,
unfused virions can be released by sucrose gradient centrifugation. The separated unfused virions subsequently fuse when incubated
with a “fresh” batch of liposomes. We conclude, therefore, that the fraction of initially bound unfused virions does not consist
of dective particles, but rather of particles bound to liposomes via “inactive” sites.
Details of the low pH inactivation of fusion capacity ofinfluenza virus towards cells and liposomes are presented. This inactivation is caused by protonation and exposure of the hydrophobic
segment of HA2, and affects primarily the fusion rate constants. Some degree of inactivation also occurs when virions are bound to cellular

Reperfusion of rat kidney submitted to temporal ischaemia induces a decrease in glutathione content. Lipid peroxidation is not detected in kidney homogenates but microsomes obtained after periods of reperfusion longer than 60 minutes show increased malondialdehyde values correlated with high oxygen consumption and superoxide free radical generation. Microsomes obtained from kidneys submitted to 15 or 60 minutes of reperfusion are resistant to NADPH-induced lipid peroxidation but after 120 minutes of reperfusion an increased lipid peroxidative response is observed. Although the mechanism of the protection found in microsomes against the induction of oxidative stress in the first 60 minutes of reperfusion is unknown, it is postulated that this subcellular fraction plays an important role in the oxidative stress observed after longer periods of reperfusion. 相似文献

Membrane fractions highly enriched in chicken lens MIP (MIP28) were found to form ion channels when incorporated into planar
lipid bilayers. The channels displayed prominent unitary conductances of about 60 and 290 pS in symmetric 150 mm KCl solution and were slightly anion selective. For both depolarizing and hyperpolarizing voltages, voltage sensitivity of
the MIP28-induced conductance could be fit by a Boltzmann relation, symmetric around zero mV, with V

= 18.5 mV, n= 4.5 and g

max= 0.17. Channel properties were not appreciably altered by pH in the range of 5.8 to 7, although channel incorporation was
observed to occur more frequently at lower pH values. Calcium, at millimolar concentrations, decreased the channel mean open
time. Partial proteolysis of MIP28 to yield MIP21 did not appreciably affect single-channel conductance or voltage sensitivity
of the reconstituted channels. MIP28 was not phosphorylated by cAMP dependent protein kinase (PKA). Although unitary conductance
and selectivity of the chicken MIP channel are similar to those reported for the bovine MIP (MIP26), the voltage sensitivity
of MIP28 was higher than that of the bovine homologue, and voltage sensitivity of MIP28 was not modulated by treatments previously
shown to affect MIP26 voltage gating (partial proteolysis and protein phosphorylation by PKA: (Ehring et al., 1990). The existence
of such strikingly different functional properties in highly homologous channel isoforms may provide a useful system for exploration
of the structure-function relations of MIP channels.

The seroprevalence of human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection was investigated in Brazilians (570): native inhabitants (298) and descendants from Japanese (272) living in Recife and its neighborhoods—North-east of Brazil. Furthermore, polytransfused renal transplanted patients (54) were also examined for the serological status to this virus. The seropositivity to HTLV-1, screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), was low: 1.34% for the local population and 0.73% for the descendants from Japanese. However, the seropositivity for the renal transplanted patients was found to be 11.1%. This higher value suggests that this retrovirus infection seems to be of importance in this clinical condition. 相似文献
