Biotransformation of β-hydroxyphenyl selenides, diphenyldiselenide and benzeneseleninic acid by whole cells of Aspergillus terreus

Aspergillus terreus CCT 3320 and A. terreus URM 3571 catalysed the biotransformations of organic β-hydroxyphenyl selenides through oxidation and methylation reactions. The kinetic resolution of (RS)-1-(phenylseleno)-2-propanol (1) via enantioselective oxidation produced (+)-(S)-1 in high enantiomeric excess (>99%) and in a yield of 50% as determined by product isolation. Oxidation of the R-enantiomer of 1, followed by elimination of the propyl moiety and subsequent methylation of the presumed intermediate, led to the formation of methylphenyl-selenide, which was isolated in a yield of 40%. Whole cells of A. terreus also biocatalysed transformations of diphenyldiselenide, benzeneseleninic acid, (RS)-1-(phenylseleno)-2-pentanol and (RS)-1-(phenylseleno)-3-methyl-2-butanol, but not of (RS)-1-(phenylseleno)-2-phenyl-methanol. This is the first report of the biomethylation of organoselenium compounds by whole cells of A. terreus.     

New cytogenetic aberrations found in a case of aggressive retinoblastoma

We describe a case of retinoblastoma with an atypical presentation and previously unreported cytogenetic aberrations. A 19-month-old girl with left intraocular retinoblastoma was treated with enucleation and chemotherapy. The disease showed aggressive evolution within a short period between diagnosis and relapse. Eight months after diagnosis, a new large tumor was present in the orbit of the right eye, with diffuse bone pain, pancytopenia and diffuse infiltration into the bone marrow and the central nervous system. The child did not respond to treatment and died. Cytogenetic studies made with G-banding, FISH and SKY analysis showed chromosomal aberrations commonly associated with retinoblastoma, including del(13q), i(6p), +1, and monosomy 16, along with others that had not been reported previously, including dup(5q), dic(15;22) and add(14q). The new chromosomal aberrations may be related to the aggressiveness of the disease in this case.     

Oviposition pattern of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) under different temperatures

The daily reproductive rate of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae was studied at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 33±0.2°C, relative humidity of 60±10% and photoperiod of L:D 14:10. Daily reproductive rate of P. nigripinus was affected by age of this predator. Each P. nigrispinus female laid 5.3 (20°C) to 19.9 eggs/day (28°C) which developed into 4.3–16.5 nymphs, respectively. Highest daily reproductive rate of P. nigrispinus was recorded at 28 and 30°C for 5–30-day-old females. This predator showed higher daily reproductive rate than its prey A. argillacea at 25°C. It was also able to reproduce at temperatures from 20 to 33°C with maximum daily reproductive rate between 25 and 30°C. These results are important for optimizing mass rearing of P. nigrispinus in the laboratory.     

Fructose addition to a glucose supplement modifies perceived exertion during strength and endurance exercise

The addition of fructose (F) to a glucose (G) supplement may modify the metabolic response during exercise; however, its effect on perceived exertion (PE) and its influence on postprandial metabolism have not been jointly studied in different types of exercise. This study sought to assess the acute effects of F addition to a G supplement on PE and on the postprandial metabolic response during a single bout of either strength exercise (SE) or endurance exercise (EE). Twenty physically trained men ingested an oral dose of G or GF 15 minutes before starting a 30-minute session of SE (10 sets of 10 repetitions of half squat) or EE (cycling). The combination resulted in 4 randomized interventions in a crossover design in which all subjects performed all experimental conditions: G + SE, GF + SE, G + EE, and GF + SE. Perceived exertion, heart rate (HR), G, insulin, lactate, and urinary catecholamine levels were measured before exercise, during the exercise, and during acute recovery. Perceived exertion during exercise was lower for GF than for G during SE and EE (mean ± SD; 8.95 ± 0.62 vs. 9.26 ± 0.65, p < 0.05 and 7.47 ± 0.84 vs. 7.74 ± 0.93, p < 0.05, respectively). The glycemic peak in GF + SE was lower than in G + SE (p < 0.05), and there was a second peak during recovery (p < 0.05), whereas in EE, no difference in blood G levels was noted between G and GF supplements. Moreover, HR, urinary adrenalin, and noradrenalin were lower in GF than in G (p < 0.05), though only for EE. The results showed that PE is positively affected by GF supplementation for both SE and EE and thus may be a useful dietary strategy for helping to achieve higher training loads.     

Ecological indicators based on trophic spectrum as a tool to assess ecosystems fishing impacts

Trophic indicators were used to compare two Malian freshwater reservoirs whose main differences are based on their different fishing pressures. Data were collected from a scientific survey of small-scale fishery landings conducted in 2002/2003. The trophic levels of fish species caught by artisanal fisheries are estimated from observations of scientific fishing or from the metabase Fishbase. Important differences exist in the trophic structure of both reservoirs. In Selingue (with high fishing pressure), very few top predators are found in the catches while the low trophic level fishes increase in total catches. In Manantali (with low fishing pressure), the top predators contribute twice as much to catches compared to Selingue. Hence, the mean trophic level of catches in Selingue (2.80) is lower than in Manantali (2.97). When comparing these results with those of study made in 1994/1995, it clearly appears that the effects of the fishing pressure in Selingue are obvious through a decrease of 0.12 in the mean trophic level while in Manantali this mean level has increased by 0.33 due to a recent strategic targeting of top predators. Trophic spectra seem to be relevant tools to characterize exploited fish communities from multi-specific and multi-gear small-scale fisheries catch data.     

Assignment of 1H, 13C and 15N resonances of the reduced human IgG1 CH3 domain

Here we report the NMR resonance assignments for the reduced form of human IgG1 C_H3 domain, a 26 kDa dimer in solution (residues 341–447). The assignments have been deposited in the BioMagResBank with a BMRB accession number of 15204.     

H-2 antigens,on mast cell membrane,as target antigens for anaphylactic degranulation

When single mast cells were isolated by micromanipulation, specific H-2 antigen-bearing mast cells were degranulated upon incubation with alloimmune sera (DAAD). When specific alloantigens were presented by lymphoid cells only, no degranulation occurred. Only antigen-bearing mast cells were degranulated, irrespectively of the presence of antigen-bearing lymphoid cells. Therefore, in DAAD, anaphylactic alloantibodies can and must recognize specific H-2 antigens on the mast cell membrane and simultaneously deliver the degranulation signal, through an Fc-Fc receptor interaction on the surface of the same mast cell.
