Social selection influences the evolution of weapons, ornaments and behaviour in both males and females. Thus, social interactions in both sexual and non-sexual contexts can have a powerful influence on the evolution of traits that would otherwise appear to be detrimental to survival. Although clearly outlined by West-Eberhard in the early 1980s, the idea that social selection is a comprehensive framework for the study of ornaments and weapons has largely been ignored. In West-Eberhard's view, sexual selection is a form of social selection-a concept supported by several lines of evidence. Darwin's distinction between natural and sexual selection has been useful, but recent confusion about the limits of sexual selection suggests that some traits are not easily categorized as naturally or sexually selected. Because social selection theory has much to offer the current debates about both sexual selection and reproductive competition in females, it is sometimes viewed, narrowly, to be most useful when considering female roles. However, social selection theory encompasses much more than female reproductive competition. Our goal here was to provide that broader perspective. 相似文献

Structural plumage colour and parasites in satin bowerbirds Ptilonorhynchus violaceus: implications for sexual selection 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We investigated whether variation in structural plumage coloration in satin bowerbirds, Ptilonorhynchus violaceus , could reveal the intensity of infection from parasites, as predicted from models of parasite-mediated sexual selection (PMSS). To do this, we captured adult male, female, and juvenile male satin bowerbirds in Queensland, Australia, and objectively measured individual plumage reflectance from four body regions using a spectrometer. We quantified both ectoparasite load and the intensity of infection from blood parasites. In iridescent blue adult males, plumage reflectance is unimodal, with a single peak in the ultraviolet, while in greenish females and juveniles, plumage reflectance is bimodal, with peaks in both the ultraviolet and green portions of the spectrum. In adult males, the intensity of infection from blood parasites was best predicted by plumage brightness (total reflectance), with brighter males having fewer parasites. Similarly, juvenile males exhibiting greater UV chroma (proportion of reflectance in the UV) had fewer blood parasites. Our findings support a key prediction of PMSS models and provide the first evidence that a structural colour ornament can signal the intensity of infection from blood parasites. 相似文献

We compared pairs of closely related taxa of cichlid fishesfrom Lake Tanganyika to examine the relationship between spermsize and the presumed intensity of sperm competition. In contrastto previous reports of relatively short sperm in polygamousfishes across a variety of taxa, we found that polygamous cichlidshad significantly longer sperm than their closest monogamousrelatives. In addition, sperm length was significantly relatedto relative testis size (controlling for body size and phylogeny). The site of fertilization may also be correlated with spermlength, as species that fertilize in the female's buccal cavityhad significantly shorter sperm than those that fertilizedeggs on the substrate. Assuming that relatively large testesand polygamous mating are indicative of more intense sperm competition,
these results indicate that sperm length is related to the intensityof sperm competition in this clade of cichlids, as has beenfound previously in insects, birds, and mammals. 相似文献

Three hypotheses (Cryptic, Female Mimicry, and Winter Adaptation) have been proposed to explain the occurrence of delayed plumage maturation (DPM) in passerine birds. We show that each of these hypotheses is really a composite of two different questions about: 1) the proximate function of dull plumage in second year (SY) males and 2) the selective mechanism that has favored that proximate function. We review the three hypotheses in the context of this distinction, and we find little evidence clearly supporting any of them. We propose a new Status Signaling Hypothesis (SSH) suggesting that dull SY male plumage is a reliable signal of subordinate. We suggest that female choice based on male plumage color (as an index of male quality) is the selective mechanism that has favored subordinate status signaling by SY males. If females prefer bright males, then dull plumage may be a reliable signal of subordinance and SY males may experience reduced levels of aggression from adult males. Male characters (like plumage color) are most likely to be the object of female choice when males defend simple nesting territories with little or no variation in territory quality. In such a system, SY males with low resource-holding potential would benefit (via matings or experience) by signaling subordinance and being allowed to settle among more brightly colored adults. Thus, DPM is expected to be more prevalent when males defend simple nesting territories. This prediction of the SSH is supported by data from the literature—a significantly higher proportion of species with DPM defend simple nesting territories (versus all-purpose territories) than do species without DPM. 相似文献

According to a recent model (Norberg 1981), birds feeding nestlings should fly faster than Vmr, the speed which minimizes the cost of transport over the ground. The flight speeds of female Lapland longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus) feeding nestlings were not significantly different from the predicted Vmr under various wind conditions. They were, however, significantly higher than the speed that minimizes the rate of energy expenditure (i.e. minimum power speed, Vmp) and significantly lower than the optimal speed (Vopt) predicted from Norberg's model. Thus, maximizing the distance travelled per unit energy expenditure appears to be the most important energetic factor affecting their flight speeds. We suggest that there may be no benefit to increasing air speed above Vmr when brood size is smaller than the maximum number that parents can successfully nourish, or when travel time makes up a small proportion of the total foraging time. 相似文献

Two patients developed reticulum cell sarcomata after they had been treated with azathioprine and prednisone in the course of cadaveric renal transplantation. Both had terminal widespread herpes simplex virus infection.Immunosuppressive therapy could be responsible for an increased risk of malignant lymphomata either directly or by facilitating infection with oncogenic viruses. 相似文献

Courtship displays may serve as signals of the quality of motor performance, but little is known about the underlying biomechanics that determines both their signal content and costs. Peacocks (Pavo cristatus) perform a complex, multimodal “train-rattling” display in which they court females by vibrating the iridescent feathers in their elaborate train ornament. Here we study how feather biomechanics influences the performance of this display using a combination of field recordings and laboratory experiments. Using high-speed video, we find that train-rattling peacocks stridulate their tail feathers against the train at 25.6 Hz, on average, generating a broadband, pulsating mechanical sound at that frequency. Laboratory measurements demonstrate that arrays of peacock tail and train feathers have a broad resonant peak in their vibrational spectra at the range of frequencies used for train-rattling during the display, and the motion of feathers is just as expected for feathers shaking near resonance. This indicates that peacocks are able to drive feather vibrations energetically efficiently over a relatively broad range of frequencies, enabling them to modulate the feather vibration frequency of their displays. Using our field data, we show that peacocks with longer trains use slightly higher vibration frequencies on average, even though longer train feathers are heavier and have lower resonant frequencies. Based on these results, we propose hypotheses for future studies of the function and energetics of this display that ask why its dynamic elements might attract and maintain female attention. Finally, we demonstrate how the mechanical structure of the train feathers affects the peacock’s visual display by allowing the colorful iridescent eyespots–which strongly influence female mate choice–to remain nearly stationary against a dynamic iridescent background. 相似文献

Two recent studies provide provocative experimental findings about the potential influence of kin recognition and cooperation on the level of sexual conflict in Drosophila melanogaster. In both studies, male fruit flies apparently curbed their mate-harming behaviours in the presence of a few familiar or related males, suggesting some form of cooperation mediated by kin selection. In one study, the reduction in agonistic behaviour by brothers apparently rendered them vulnerable to dramatic loss of paternity share when competing with an unrelated male. If these results are robust and generalizable, fruit flies could be a major new focus for the experimental study of kin selection and social evolution. In our opinion, however, the restrictive conditions required for male cooperation to be adaptive in this species make it unlikely to evolve. We investigated these phenomena in two different populations of D. melanogaster using protocols very similar to those in the two previous studies. Our experiments show no evidence for a reduction in mate harm based upon either relatedness or familiarity between males, and no reduction in male reproductive success when two brothers are in the presence of an unfamiliar, unrelated, ‘foreign’ male. Thus, the reduction of sexual conflict owing to male cooperation does not appear to be a general feature of the species, at least under domestication, and these contrasting results call for further investigation: in new populations, in the field and in the laboratory populations in which these phenomena have been reported. 相似文献
