Abundance and biomass estimates of the benthic fauna in Admiralty Bay,King George Island,South Shetland Islands 总被引:9,自引:6,他引:3
Summary Quantitative benthic samples were collected along three transects in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetlands. At each of a total of 18 stations, between 15 and 250 m depth, we took 3 replicate samples with a van Veen grab. Animals collected were classed into major groups. Abundance and biomass per m2 was calculated for each sampling site. Considerable population densities and high biomass values were found. Most abundant groups were Bivalvia, Polychaeta and Amphipoda, whereas the largest part of the biomass was due to Ascidiacea, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, Polychaeta and Bivalvia. The maximum abundance recorded was 36,000 ind m-2 while the average was approximately 6500 ind m-2. Maximum biomass was over 2400 g m-2 with an average of ca. 700 g m-2. The contribution to the total biomass by groups such as the Oligochaeta, Cumacea and Tanaidacea was higher in the inner shallow part of Admiralty Bay (Ezcurra Inlet) than in the deeper areas of the bay. Our results confirm the reports on an unusually high density and biomass of the Antarctic sublittoral benthic fauna. Sessile suspension feeders belonging to the Bivalvia, Ascidiacea, sedentary Polychaeta, and vagile scavengers of the Ophiuroidea, Amphipoda and errant Polychaeta are the most significant groups in the Antarctic Ecosystem. The total benthic biomass in Admiralty Bay, based on the present preliminary quantitative data, was estimated to be over 600,000 t. This value is probably still an underestimate. 相似文献

For three types of self-sucking impellers (fourand six-pipe and disk impellers) mixing power, initial point, amount of gas leaving the impeller and mass transfer coefficient were determined experimentally. Summary Photosynthetic oxygen evolution from Antarctic macroalgaAdenocystis utricularis, collected from littoral zone of Admiralty Bay of King George Island (South Shetland), was measured under standard laboratory conditions during a 9-month study period. During autumn and winter the photosynthetic apparatus of the alga revealed an increased capacity to use low irradiance. This coincided with increasing concentrations of chlorophyll a+c. The tricyclic antidepressant desipramine, when added to culture medium, gave rise in C6 rat glioma cells to a decrease of the activity of the enzyme asialofetuin sialyltransferase. The inhibition was dose and time dependent and was observed in both multiplying cells and cells blocked with 2 mM thymidine or depletion of amino acids. This inhibition was rather specific to the sialyltransferase, as under the conditions where this enzyme was inhibited up to 70%, other enzymes such as dolichol phosphate mannose synthetase, glutamine synthetase, and glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase remained unaffected. This inhibition was not reversed after removal of desipramine from the medium and was not observed by direct addition of desipramine to the sialyltransferase incubation assay. Under the same conditions, W-7 [N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide], which is known to be a potent calmodulin antagonist and an inhibitor of calmodulin-dependent kinases, gave the same concentration-dependent inhibition profile of sialyltransferase as desipramine, whereas H-7 [1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine], which is an inhibitor of protein kinase C and cyclic nucleotide-dependent kinases, had no effect. The aim of this study was to elaborate a method of heterophile mononucleosis antigen preparation useful for latex coating. This antigen was isolated from bovine red blood cells stroma by the technique of Schwarzweiss and Tomcsik with author's own modification, in which introductory extraction of erythrocytes stroma ++ was performed by means of trichloracetic acid, aqueous extraction and elution of active substance with 80% ethanol. Besides of heterophile antigen preparation obtained by the method of Schwerzweiss and Tomcsik (preparation S-T) two serologically++ active preparations were obtained (fraction I and IV), which ability to inhibit PBD agglutinating reaction and bovine red blood cells haemolysis was 16 and 8 times lower, respectively, than S-T preparation. The preparation of heterophile mononucleosis antigen obtained differed in latex coating efficacy. In order to prepare latex reagent MZ-I (from fraction I) a solution of preparation of 125 micrograms/ml concentration was used, for MZ-II (from fraction IV)--50 micrograms and for MZ-III (from preparation S-T)--15 micrograms/ml. The reagent MZ-I showed, the highest activity in agglutinating test with human serum containing heterophile mononucleosis antibodies while two others reacted with 2-4 times lover serum dilutions. Summary During cell division in antheridial filaments ofChara vulgaris an increase in DNA content occurs in both shield cells and manubria within an antheridium, reaching 16C–64C and 8C–32C levels, respectively. Endoreplication ceases prior to the formation of spermatids and initiation of spermiogenesis, probably as a result of symplasmic isolation of the antheridium from the thallus. As the DNA content of the nuclei increases, the shield cells3H-leucine incorporation increases, and they grow intensively in the tangential plane. Translation decreases considerably after termination of shield cell growth. DNA content of mature manubria is half of that in shield cells, although their size is 10 times that of manubria. Translational activity of manubria also increases as DNA content rises and cells grow. However, during spermiogenesis, this activity remains at its maximum, which is associated with the secretory function of the manubria. Spermiogenesis is also accompanied by far-reaching ultrastructural changes within the manubrial cytoplasm.The level of endopolyploidy in both shield cells and manubria of antheridia formed in the spring is higher by one replication cycle, than in autumnal antheridia. AMO-1618, at a concentration of 10–5M reduces the DNA content in the autumnal manubria. The higher the manubrial level of endopolyploidy in spermiogenesis, the greater their size, and the higher the translational activity and number of joined spermatids. The number of spermatozoids in the antheridium is also positively correlated with the internal volume of an antheridium, which is itself dependent on the endopolyploidy level of shield cells.The results obtained confirm the assumption that endoreplication favours the higher growth dynamics and potential translational activity, which occurs in the dynamic growth phase only in shield cells, while in manubria, i.e. cells producing substances necessary to spermatozoids development, it remains high until the end of spermiogenesis. 相似文献
