Cluster analysis of behavioural and event-related potentials during a contingent negative variation paradigm in remitting-relapsing and benign forms of multiple sclerosis

Background  

Event-related potentials (ERPs) may be used as a highly sensitive way of detecting subtle degrees of cognitive dysfunction. On the other hand, impairment of cognitive skills is increasingly recognised as a hallmark of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). We sought to determine the psychophysiological pattern of information processing among MS patients with the relapsing-remitting form of the disease and low physical disability considered as two subtypes: 'typical relapsing-remitting' (RRMS) and 'benign MS' (BMS). Furthermore, we subjected our data to a cluster analysis to determine whether MS patients and healthy controls could be differentiated in terms of their psychophysiological profile.     

The effect of light on the growth rate of intertidal Acropora pulchra (Brook) from Phuket,Thailand, lat. 8°N

Series of apices of Acropora pulchra from an intertidal reef at Phuket, Thailand, were grown at different depths in the sea, and the length growth was monitored at 12–24 h intervals with laser diffraction. The growth rates of actively growing apices were normally distributed and showed a high variability, with an average coefficient of variation of 58%. There was a highly significant difference in average growth rate between adjacent colonies. A significant linear relationship was found between irradiance and length growth, with a saturating level at 300–400 Wm^-2. At 1000 Wm^-2 length growth was significantly reduced. Under normal daylight conditions, day and night growth rates were equal.     

The use of GMOs (genetically modified organisms): agricultural biotechnology or agricultural biopolitics?

Agricultural biotechnologies embrace a large array of conventional and modern technologies, spanning from composting organic by-products of agriculture to innovative improvement of quality traits of about twenty out of the mostly cultivated plants. In EU a rather restrictive legislative framework has been installed for GMOs, requiring a risk assessment disproportionate with respect to conventional agriculture and organic farming products. The latter are far from being proved safe for human and animal health, and for the environment.Biotechnology of GMOs has been overtaken by biopolitics. On one side there are biotechnological challenges to be tackled, on another side there is plenty of ground for biopolitical decisions about GMOs. Perhaps the era of harsh confrontation could be fruitfully replaced by sensible cooperation, in order to get a sustainable agricultural development.     

Goldston syndrome: report of a case.

Cerebrohepatorenal malformation is a rare familial disorder characterized by typical renal lesions combined with Dandy-Walker malformation, and congenital hepatic fibrosis. In this case report, a male premie with the diagnosis of cerebrorenal syndrome or so called Goldston syndrome is presented. Besides the rarity of this syndrome, this case is the second reported patient diagnosed prenatally.
