Invasive species may outperform native species by acquiring more resources or by efficiently using limited resources. Studies comparing leaf traits as a metric of carbon capture strategies in native and invasive species have come to different conclusions. Some studies suggest that invasive species are better at acquiring resources, but that native and invasive species use resources similarly. Other studies have found that native and invasive species differ in resource use efficiency, which implies different biochemical or physiological mechanisms of carbon capture. To resolve this debate, we examined relationships among four leaf traits (photosynthetic rate, specific leaf area, foliar nitrogen, foliar phosphorus) in co-occurring native and invasive species from eight plant communities across five Mediterranean-climate ecosystems. We performed standardized major axis regression for all trait combinations within and across sites, testing for slope homogeneity and shifts in elevation (y-intercept) or along a common slope between species groups. Across the global dataset, native and invasive species had similar carbon capture strategies (i.e., similar slopes), with invasive species occupying a position of greater resource acquisition. However, these patterns did not hold when regions were analyzed individually. Regional differences may be driven by differences in life form between native and invasive species, and variation in soil resource availability among regions. Our context-dependent results reveal not only that management of invasive species will differ across regions but also that global comparisons of invasive and native species can be misleading.  相似文献

Aims

Responses to salt stress of two Gypsophila species that share territory, but with different ecological optima and distribution ranges, were analysed. G. struthium is a regionally dominant Iberian endemic gypsophyte, whereas G. tomentosa is a narrow endemic reported as halophyte. The working hypothesis is that salt tolerance shapes the presence of these species in their specific habitats.

Methods

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, we assessed the soil characteristics and vegetation structure at the sampling site, seed germination and seedling development, growth and flowering, synthesis of proline and cation accumulation under artificial conditions of increasing salt stress and effect of PEG on germination and seedling development.

Results

Soil salinity was low at the all sampling points where the two species grow, but moisture was higher in the area of G. tomentosa. Differences were found in the species’ salt and drought tolerance. The different parameters tested did not show a clear pattern indicating the main role of salt tolerance in plant distribution.

Conclusions

G. tomentosa cannot be considered a true halophyte as previously reported because it is unable to complete its life cycle under salinity. The presence of G. tomentosa in habitats bordering salt marshes is a strategy to avoid plant competition and extreme water stress.  相似文献

Cadmium uptake, tissue localization and structural changes induced at cellular level are essential to understand Cd tolerance in plants. In this study we have exposed plants of Pteris vittata to different concentrations of CdCl2 (0, 30, 60, 100 μM) to evaluate the tolerance of the fern to cadmium. Cadmium content determination and its histochemical localization showed that P. vittata not only takes up, but also transports and accumulates cadmium in the aboveground tissues, delocalizing it mainly in the less bioactive tissues of the frond, the trichomes and the scales. Cadmium tolerance in P. vittata was strictly related to morphogenic response induced by the metal itself in the root system. Adaptive response regarded changes of the root apex size, the developmental pattern of root hairs, the differentiation of xylem elements and endodermal suberin lamellae. All the considered parameters suggest that, in our experimental conditions, 60 μM of Cd may represent the highest concentration that P. vittata can tolerate; indeed this Cd level even improves the absorbance features of the root and allows good transport and accumulation of the metal in the fronds. The results of this study can provide useful information for phytoremediation strategies of soils contaminated by Cd, exploiting the established ability of P. vittata to transport, delocalize in the aboveground biomass and accumulate polluting metals.  相似文献

We examined the effects of lactate on the enzymatic activity of hexokinase (HK), phosphofructokinase (PFK) and pyruvate kinase (PK) in various mouse tissues. Our results showed that lactate inhibited PFK activity in all the analyzed tissues. This inhibitory effect was observed in skeletal muscle even in the presence of insulin. Lactate directly inhibited the phosphorylation of PFK tyrosine residues in skeletal muscle, an important mechanism of the enzyme activation. Moreover, lactate indirectly inhibited HK activity, which resulted from its cellular redistribution, here attributed to alterations of HK structure. PK activity was not affected by lactate. The activity of HK and PFK is directly related to glucose metabolism. Thus, it is conceivable that lactate exposure can induce inhibition of glucose consumption in tissues.  相似文献

The oxaloacetate decarboxylase primary Na(+) pump (OAD) is an essential membrane protein complex that functions in the citrate fermentation pathway of some pathogenic bacteria under anaerobic conditions. OAD contains three different subunits: Oad-α, a biotinylated extrinsic protein that catalyzes the α-ketodecarboxylation of oxaloacetate; Oad-γ, a structural bitopic membrane protein whose cytosolic tail (named as Oad-γ') binds tightly to Oad-α; and Oad-β, a multispan transmembrane α-helical protein that constitutes the Na(+) channel. How OAD is organized structurally at the membrane and what the molecular determinants are that lead to an efficient energy coupling mechanism remain elusive. In the present work, we elucidate the stoichiometry of the native complex as well as the low resolution structure of the peripheral components of OAD (Oad-α and Oad-γ') by small angle x-ray scattering. Our results point to a quaternary assembly similar to the pyruvate carboxylase complex organization. Herein, we propose a model in which the association in pairs of Oad-α dimers, mediated by Oad-γ, results in the acquisition of a functional oligomeric state at the bacterial membrane. New structural insights for the conformational rearrangements associated with the carboxylbiotin transfer reaction within OAD are provided.  相似文献

Sucrose accumulation in sugarcane: a potential target for crop improvement   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sugarcane is a highly productive crop plant with the capacity of storing large amounts of sucrose. Sucrose accumulation in the stem of sugarcane has been studied extensively. The initial recognition and characterization of the enzymes involved in sucrose synthesis and cleavage led to the widely accepted models of how sucrose accumulation occurs in the storage tissue. New insights were gained into the physiological role of individual enzyme activities in the process of sucrose accumulation in sugarcane. Studies on cell cultures and on isolated cell fragments initially supported and strengthened these models, but more recent research has revealed their weaknesses. A dynamic model of rapid cycling of sucrose and turnover of sucrose between vacuole, metabolic and apoplastic compartments explains much of the data, but the details of how the cycling is regulated needs to be explored. Genomic research into sucrose metabolism has been based on the premise that cataloging genes expressed in association with the stalk development would ultimately lead to the identification of genes controlling the accumulation of sucrose. Considerable progress has been made in understanding and manipulating the sugarcane genome using biotechnological and cell biology approaches. Thus, the greater understanding of physiology of sucrose accumulation and the sugarcane genome will play a significant role in the future sugarcane improvement programs and will offer new opportunities to develop it as a new-generation industrial crop.  相似文献

The Grande Albergo Ausonia &; Hungaria (Venice Lido, Italy) has an Art Nouveau polychrome ceramic coating on its façade, which was restored in 2007. Soon after the conservation treatment, many tiles of the façade decoration showed coloured alterations putatively attributed to the presence of microbial communities. To confirm the presence of the biological deposit and the stratigraphy of the Hungaria tiles, stereomicroscope, optical and environmental scanning electron microscope observations were made. The characterisation of the microbial community was performed using a PCR–DGGE approach. This study reported the first use of a culture-independent approach to identify the total community present in biodeteriorated artistic tiles. The case study examined here reveals that the coloured alterations on the tiles were mainly due to the presence of cryptoendolithic cyanobacteria. In addition, we proved that the microflora present on the tiles was generally greatly influenced by the environment of the Hungaria hotel. We found several microorganisms related to the alkaline environment, which is in the range of the tile pH, and related to the aquatic environment, the presence of the acrylic resin Paraloid B72® used during the 2007 treatment and the pollutants of the Venice lagoon.  相似文献

Delay discounting describes the decline in the value of a reinforcer as the delay to that reinforcer increases. A review of the available studies revealed that steep delay discounting is positively correlated with problem or pathological gambling. One hypothesis regarding this correlation derives from the discounting equation proposed by Mazur (1989). According to the equation, steeper discounting renders the difference between fixed-delayed rewards and gambling-like variable-delayed rewards larger; with the latter being more valuable. The present study was designed to test this prediction by first assessing rats’ impulsive choices across four delays to a larger-later reinforcer. A second condition quantified strength of preference for mixed- over fixed-delays, with the duration of the latter adjusted between sessions to achieve indifference. Strength of preference for the mixed-delay alternative is given by the fixed delay at indifference (lower fixed-delay values reflect stronger preferences). Percent impulsive choice was not correlated with the value of the fixed delay at indifference and, therefore, the prediction of the hyperbolic model of gambling was not supported. A follow-up assessment revealed a significant decrease in impulsive choice after the second condition. This shift in impulsive choice could underlie the failure to observe the predicted correlation between impulsive choice and degree of preference for mixed- over fixed delays.  相似文献
