We previously reported how the opinions of second-year dentistry students and faculty members can be used to construct an assessment rubric to grade group-based concept maps in physiology. This article describes the second phase of this study of the subsequent year's cohort. A case study approach was used to investigate how groups of students used the criteria to complete their complex concept maps. Students' opinions about the assessment task and newly constructed rubric were sampled. Opinions across groups were correlated to academic achievements in the course. Two groups of four students volunteered to be videorecorded during a 4-h workshop, during which they completed their maps. The mapping task was not generally favored by students. However, those students who did favor the task achieved higher academic grades. Most students favored the newly constructed assessment rubric, commenting that it was easy to understand, fair, and appropriate, but reported that extra guidance from tutors and other resources were required. Coded videorecordings of the two observation groups revealed complex interactions around the three criteria of content, logic and understanding, and presentation. Two broad patterns of working were identified. One group distributed their efforts more evenly across the criteria, whereas the other group completed their maps by addressing the criteria in stages. These findings clearly indicate the academic challenges and social complexity in how students work in groups to complete complex concept maps in physiology. 相似文献

Ant-mediated seed dispersal may be a form of directed dispersal if collected seeds are placed in a favorable microhabitat (e.g., in or near an ant nest) that increases plant establishment, growth, and/or reproduction relative to random locations. We investigated whether the native ant community interacts with invasive leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) in a manner consistent with predictions of the directed dispersal hypothesis. Resident ants quickly located and dispersed 60% of experimentally offered E. esula seeds. Additionally, 40% of seeds whose final deposition site was observed were either brought inside or placed on top of an ant nest. Seed removal was 100% when seeds were placed experimentally on foraging trails of mound-building Formica obscuripes, although the deposition site of these seeds is unknown. Natural density and above-ground biomass of E. esula were greater on Formica mound edges compared to random locations. However, seedling recruitment and establishment from experimentally planted E. esula seeds was not greater on mound edges than random locations 3 m from the mound. Soil from Formica mound edges was greater in available nitrogen and available phosphorus relative to random soil locations 3 m from the mound. These results suggest Formica ant mounds are favorable microhabitats for E. esula growth following seedling establishment, a likely consequence of nutrient limitation during plant growth. The results also indicate positive species interactions may play an important role in biological invasions. 相似文献

Luminol chemiluminescence (LCL) is a simple, sensitive and time-saving tool to elucidate the oxidative activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL). In this study, a new approach for analysing the LCL kinetics, recorded from stimulated PMNL, and for a more accurate elucidation of their functional state, is proposed. This approach is based on the proposal that the LCL kinetics of stimulated PMNL is a result of time-probabilistic nature of the processes, leading to light emission. On this basis the LCL response was described by the parameters of a Poisson-type distribution. Relationships between these parameters and some factors influencing LCL kinetics (number of PMNL and erythrocytes, temperature, stirring) were investigated. Their development in time was different. It was suggested, that the two phases of the model LCL response were connected with extracellular and intracellular LCL. The terms and the advantages of this approach for analysis of phagocyte oxidative capacity are discussed. 相似文献

Equilibrium unfolding of A. niger RNase with chemical denaturants, for example GuHCl and urea, and thermal unfolding have been studied as a function of pH
using fluorescence, far-UV, near-UV, and absorbance spectroscopy. Because of their ability to affect electrostatic interactions,
pH and chemical denaturants have a marked effect on the stability, structure, and function of many globular proteins. ANS
binding studies have been conducted to enable understanding of the folding mechanism of the protein in the presence of the
denaturants. Spectroscopic studies by absorbance, fluorescence, and circular dichroism and use of K2D software revealed that
the enzyme has α + β type secondary structure with approximately 29% α-helix, 24% β-sheet, and 47% random coil. Under neutral
conditions the enzyme is stable in urea whereas GuHCl-induced equilibrium unfolding was cooperative. A. niger RNase has little ANS binding even under neutral conditions. Multiple intermediates were populated during the pH-induced unfolding
of A. niger RNase. Urea and temperature-induced unfolding of A. niger RNase into the molten globule-like state is non-cooperative, in contrast to the cooperativity seen with the native protein,
suggesting the presence of two parts/domains, in the molecular structure of A. niger RNase, with different stability that unfolds in steps. Interestingly, the GuHCl-induced unfolding of the A state (molten globule state) of A. niger RNase is unique, because a low concentration of denaturant not only induces structural change but also facilitates transition

Frequency of malaria and its resistance to chemotherapeutic options are emerging rapidly. To counter this problem, a series of 4-aminoquinolines having oxalamide and triazine functionalities in the side chain were synthesized and screened for their antimalarial activities. Triazine derivative 48 found to be the most active against CQ sensitive strain 3D7 of Plasmodium falciparum in an in vitro assay with an IC50 of 5.23 ng/mL and oxalamide derivative 13 showed an in vivo suppression of 70.45% on day 4 against CQ resistant strain N-67 of Plasmodium yoelii. 相似文献

We investigated the relationship between the blue light receptor phototropin 1 (phot1) and lateral root growth in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. Fluorescence and confocal microscopy images, as well as PHOT1 mRNA expression studies provide evidence that it is highly expressed in the elongation zone of lateral roots where auxin is accumulating. However, treatment with the auxin transport inhibitor N‐1‐naphthylphthalamic acid significantly reduced PHOT1 expression in this zone. In addition, PHOT1 expression was higher in darkness than in light. The total number of lateral roots was higher in the phot1 mutant than in wild‐type Arabidopsis. Cells in the elongation zone of lateral roots of the phot1 mutant were longer than those of wild‐type lateral roots. These findings suggest that PHOT1 plays a role(s) in elongation of lateral roots through the control of an auxin‐related signalling pathway. 相似文献
