ObjectiveTo collect regional reference values of waist circumference (WC), and waist/hip ratio (WHR) in children and adolescents from Merida, Venezuela, and to compare them to international references.Subjects and methodsA total of 919 students aged 9-17 years from public and private educational establishments were assessed. Weight, height, WC, and WHR were measured. Outliers (± 3 SD Z-Score) were excluded from the data collected. Percentile distribution of the tested variables was done by age and sex.ResultsFifty-one percent of subjects were female, and 52.7% were from public institutions. WC (p = 0.001) and WHR (p = 0.0001) were statistically higher in boys. With advancing age, WC increased in both sexes, while WHR showed the opposite behavior (p = 0.0001 for both). The 90th percentile (pc) for WC ranged from 69.7 and 83.6 cm in girls and from 69.2 and 86.7 cm in boys. The 90th pc values of WHR ranged from 0.79 and 0.91 in girls and from 0.86 and 0.93 in boys. Overall, our WC and WHR values were lower than North American values and similar to those of some Latin American references.ConclusionPercentile reference charts for WC and WHR specific for age and sex, obtained from a representative sample of children and adolescents from Mérida, Venezuela, are provided. They may be used regionally, both for individual assessment and to implement prevention policies.  相似文献

The emergence of cooperation among unrelated human subjects is a long-standing conundrum that has been amply studied both theoretically and experimentally. Within the question, a less explored issue relates to the gender dependence of cooperation, which can be traced back to Darwin, who stated that "women are less selfish but men are more competitive". Indeed, gender has been shown to be relevant in several game theoretical paradigms of social cooperativeness, including prisoner''s dilemma, snowdrift and ultimatum/dictator games, but there is no consensus as to which gender is more cooperative. We here contribute to this literature by analyzing the role of gender in a repeated Prisoners'' Dilemma played by Spanish high-school students in both a square lattice and a heterogeneous network. While the experiment was conducted to shed light on the influence of networks on the emergence of cooperation, we benefit from the availability of a large dataset of more 1200 participants. We applied different standard econometric techniques to this dataset, including Ordinary Least Squares and Linear Probability models including random effects. All our analyses indicate that being male is negatively associated with the level of cooperation, this association being statistically significant at standard levels. We also obtain a gender difference in the level of cooperation when we control for the unobserved heterogeneity of individuals, which indicates that the gender gap in cooperation favoring female students is present after netting out this effect from other socio-demographics factors not controlled for in the experiment, and from gender differences in risk, social and competitive preferences.  相似文献

The enteropathy called paratuberculosis (PTB), which mainly affects ruminants and has a worldwide distribution, is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. This disease significantly reduces the cost-effectiveness of ruminant farms, and therefore, reliable and rapid detection methods are needed to control the spread of the bacterium in livestock and in the environment. The aim of this study was to identify a specific and sensitive combination of DNA extraction and amplification to detect M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis in feces. Negative bovine fecal samples were inoculated with increasing concentrations of two different bacterial strains (field and reference) to compare the performance of four extraction and five amplification protocols. The best results were obtained using the JohnePrep and MagMax extraction kits combined with an in-house triplex real-time PCR designed to detect IS900, ISMap02 (an insertion sequence of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis present in 6 copies per genome), and an internal amplification control DNA simultaneously. These combinations detected 10 M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis cells/g of spiked feces. The triplex PCR detected 1 fg of genomic DNA extracted from the reference strain K10. The performance of the robotized version of the MagMax extraction kit combined with the IS900 and ISMap02 PCR was further evaluated using 615 archival fecal samples from the first sampling of nine Friesian cattle herds included in a PTB control program and followed up for at least 4 years. The analysis of the results obtained in this survey demonstrated that the diagnostic method was highly specific and sensitive for the detection of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis in fecal samples from cattle and a very valuable tool to be used in PTB control programs.  相似文献

Vasopressin increases urine concentration through activation of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) in the collecting duct. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) block prostaglandin E2 synthesis, and may suppress AQP2 producing a urine concentrating defect. There are four serines in AQP2 that are phosphorylated by vasopressin. To determine if chronic use of NSAIDs changes AQP2’s phosphorylation at any of these residues, the effects of a non-selective NSAID, ibuprofen, and a COX-2-selective NSAID, meloxicam, were investigated. Daily ibuprofen or meloxicam increased the urine output and decreased the urine osmolality significantly by days 7 through 14. Concomitantly, meloxicam significantly reduced total AQP2 protein abundance in inner medulla (IM) tip to 64% of control and base to 63%, respectively. Ibuprofen significantly decreased total AQP2 in IM tip to 70% of control, with no change in base. Meloxicam significantly increased the ratios of p256-AQP2 and p261-AQP2 to total AQP2 in IM tip (to 44% and 40%, respectively). Ibuprofen increased the ratio of p256-AQP2 to total AQP2 in IM tip but did not affect p261-AQP2/total AQP2 in tip or base. Both ibuprofen and meloxicam increased p264-AQP2 and p269-AQP2 ratios in both tip and base. Ibuprofen increased UT-A1 levels in IM tip, but not in base. We conclude that NSAIDs reduce AQP2 abundance, contributing to decreased urine concentrating ability. They also increase some phosphorylated forms of AQP2. These changes may partially compensate for the decrease in AQP2 abundance, thereby lessening the decrease in urine osmolality.  相似文献

There are few examples of differentiated sex chromosomes in fishes. In the genus Leporinus, seven species present a highly differentiated ZW system, derived from heterochromatinization process. Cytogenetic analyses carried out in three of these fish species, Leporinus obtusidens, L. elongatus and L. reinhardti, through RBG-banding, showed late replication bands, coincident with heterochromatic regions in both Z and W chromosomes. A similar interstitial early replication segment was observed in the complex heterochromatic region along the Wq arms in the three species, which might correspond to a pseudoautosomal segment (SD, sex determining locus). Asynchrony related to the replication pattern among different Z chromosomes was not observed. When the identification of nuclear organizer regions by silver nitrate was performed over chromosomal preparations previously exposed to 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU), remarkable positive signals at interstitial and telomeric position were observed on the q arms of W chromosomes in the species L. elongatus and L. reinhardti. The absence of 18S ribosomal RNA gene loci in this region, formerly demonstrated by FISH, indicates that this argentophilic behavior is putatively due to heterochromatin decondensation caused by BrdU incorporation, favoring such Ag+ reaction. Early and late replication bands were also observed in the heterochromatic portions of Z and W chromosomes, indicating that euchromatic and heterochromatic regions are interspersed. The present data suggest a significant level of heterochromatic complexity in the sex chromosomes of each species. On the other hand, the replication pattern shared by them supports a monophyletic origin.  相似文献
